Throughout her career she has been no stranger to literary awards; she’s taken home the Governor General’s Literary Award (1968, 1978, 1986), the Booker (1980), the Man Booker (2009), and the Giller Prize (1998, 2004), among many others. On October 10, 2013, Canadians were elated to hear that Alice Munro had won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Since the annual award was founded in 1901, it has been awarded to 110 Nobel Laureates, but Munro is the first Canadian—and the 13th woman—ever to win. In order to help publishers ensure they have enough books to meet demand if one of their titles wins an award, BookNet Canada compiles annual literary award studies examining the sales trends in Canada for shortlisted and winning titles. So as soon as the Munro win was announced, the wheels at BookNet started turning. What happens when a Canadian author receives the Nobel Prize in Literature? How much will the sales of their books increase in Canada? And will their sales also increase internationally? To answer these questions, BookNet Canada has joined forces with Nielsen Book to analyze Canadian and international sales data for Alice Munro’s titles. -

“A Sort of Refusal”: Alice Munro’s Reluctant Career Lorraine York s we look back together in this fortieth anniversary issue of Studies in Canadian Literature to the journal’s founding year, 1976, that date stands out to scholars of Canadian lit- eraryA celebrity for a couple of additional reasons. That was the year that Margaret Atwood took the unprecedented step for a Canadian writer of incorporating the business activities of her career as O.W. Toad Limited (an anagram of “Atwood”). The move, probably undertaken for practical and private financial reasons, was little commented upon at the time, but I have argued that it marks a turning point in the his- tory of Canadian writers’ public visibility and professional organization (Margaret Atwood 7). Atwood’s early recognition of the extent of her literary success signalled a nascent recognition of literary celebrity as an industry. Although there is plenty of evidence that Canadian writ- ers considered their work as a business before this — one thinks, for example, of the founding of the Canadian Authors Association in 1921 — Atwood’s incorporation renders explicit the collaborative labour that supports literary celebrity. The very fact that Atwood’s move was not widely discussed, or even recognized as a sign of something larger taking shape in Canadian literary circles, sheds light on these intervening forty years and on the way in which the growing industrialization of literary celebrity has come up against the persistent image of the Canadian writer as solely concerned with aesthetics and humble, restricted fields of small-scale production. As Kit Dobson observes, interviews with Canadian writers “rarely engage writers in conversations about what it means for them to create artistic works in a market that is necessarily concerned with its economic bottom line” (Dobson and Kamboureli 4). -
Translating Connections in Alice Munro's
Connections: A Journal of Language, Media and Culture Towards a Translator Criticism: (Mis)translating connections in Alice Munro’s “Too Much Happiness” Anna Antonova1 1 Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In Towards a Translation Criticism: John Donne, Antoine Berman centres translation analysis on the translator’s personality itself, suggesting the concepts of individual “position,” “project,” and “horizon” as the cornerstones of translation critique. This article will apply Berman’s model to Alice Munro’s short story “Too Much Happiness” and its Russian translation “Слишком много счастья” by Andrey Stepanov. The resulting comparative analysis framework will highlight how a translation project enforcing its inherent biases on the target text may produce a textual product misrepresenting the original and serving imperialist, rather than purely cultural, goals. Although Munro’s story, based on the life of the Russian mathematician Sophia Kovalevsky, does invite connections between the source and target cultures, the translator’s consistent self-positioning towards the heroine’s gender and nationality leads to profound shifts in meaning. Stepanov’s translation project focuses on asserting his country’s cultural and literary superiority, while revealing his condescending attitude to the female protagonist. As a result, the Russian translation of “Too Much Happiness” plays up non-essential cultural connections and undermines the author’s critical perspective on the Russian reality. At the same time, the translator’s approach discredits the story’s complex main character and effectively erases the feminist undertones of Munro’s narrative. A careful examination of this case study building on Berman’s critical model problematizes the widely-discussed concept of translator’s agency and emphasizes the importance of comprehensive translator-centred analysis which combines textual and extratextual aspects. -

Obsessed with comings and goings, inscriptions and erasures, Munro’s writing is particularly Canadian, we submit, by dint of the grating against each other of two fundamental and apparently opposed forces. Her collections of stories attest to a conception of geological time upon which is placed a shallow and ephemeral architectural world the traces of which she passionately attempts to secure from their fast- approaching disappearance. Munro tirelessly de-sediments such cryptic enclosures, shakes their secret events out into raw exposure, affirms life’s indestructible after-life. Munro writes environment, yoking Canadian place in the Anthropocene (the era of the human in geological time) with literary space-time in imagination (the epoch of the trace). -

Although the events have close resemblance to Munro’s life, these are factiously and artistically depicted so that they serve the purpose of literature and the stylistic aspects of the story. The researchers in the paper analyze and discuss the stylistic characteristics of the author with the help of the textual evidence from the story and to further support these, they cite the literature on the similar aspects. Finally, it is found that Munro’s fantastic style and the blend of the autobiographical facts and fiction make her story ‘Dear Life’ very interesting and worth reading. We only had to read one short story, ‘The Love of a Good Woman’, but it appealed to me and I wanted to read more of it. With the release of her new collection of stories in August 2009, the idea came to write a master dissertation on Munro’s use of gothic elements within her realist fiction. I would like to thank my supervisor, Prof. Dr. Hilde Staels, because she has provided assistance in numerous ways. Nota biobibliográfica Alice Munro nació el 10 de julio de 1931 en Wingham, en la provincia canadiense de Ontario. Su madre era maestra y su padre tenía una granja de zorros. Tras el bachillerato inició estudios de periodismo e inglés en la Universidad de Western Ontario, pero los abandonó al casarse en 1951. La pareja se estableció en Victoria, en la Columbia Británica, donde abrieron una librería. Munro había empezado a escribir relatos cortos ya en la adolescencia, pero su debut en forma de libro no tuvo lugar hasta 1968 con la colección de relatos Dance of the Happy Shades , que tuvo gran reconocimiento en su país. Para entonces y ya desde principios de los años cincuenta Munro había venido publicando en diversas revistas. En 1971 publicó una serie de narraciones con el título Lives of Girls and Women (La vida de las mujeres, 2011), un libro que la crítica ha calificado como novela de aprendizaje. Es principalmente como escritora de relatos como Munro se ha dado a conocer, y a lo largo de los años las colecciones han sido muchas. Entre sus obras encontramos Who Do You Think You Are ? (1978), The Moons of Jupiter (1982; Las lunas de Júpiter , 1990), Runaway (2004; Escapada , 2005), The View from Castle Rock (2006; La vista desde Castle Rock , 2008) y Too Much Happiness (2009; Demasiada felicidad , 2010). La colección Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage (2001; Odio, amistad, noviazgo, amor, matrimonio , 2003) constituyó el punto de partida de la película Away from Her (Lejos de ella ) de 2006, dirigida por Sarah Polley.
