Shifting orientation in Sufism: its development and doctrine adjustment in history Elmansyah al-Haramain Senior High School (SMA) Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga, Indonesia E-mail: [email protected] Abstract One of Islamic cultures that is constantly able to evolve and adapt to the various condition is Sufism. In the process of development, Sufism has always been a solution to various issues in society, and it is also aimed at achieving closed relation to the Lord. Shifting orientation of Sufism has occurred in any kind of its theology, politics, philosophy, and organization. The present studies of Sufism development lead to medical issues. Some experts call it Sufi Healing. It is interesting to discuss it since the shifting orientation brings something positive to the development of Sufism. However, there are many things that need to be reviewed, namely the provision of the proposition for any behavioral recovery which seemed a merely justification. This article is presented by using a historical and a phenomenological approach that emphasizes on the existence of its phenomenon. Through this article, it is expected to obtain an understanding of Sufism and its various efforts in developing the doctrine of al-ihsa} n> in Islam in he context of digital era. Yet, it also offers certain rewards and benefits to human psychology. The purpose of this article is to explain how Zakat (Islamic charity), or the giving of alms to the poor or those in need, can help improve one’s psychological well-being. Neo Sufism Teaching of Syekh Al-Palimbani in the Book of Hidayah Al-Sa>Liki>N
Neo Sufism Teaching of Syekh Al-Palimbani In The Book of Hidayah Al-Sa>liki>n Umi Masfiah [email protected] Abstract Neo Sufisme idea of Syekh al-Palimbani in the Book of Hidayah al-Sâlikîn has contributed to the reaffirmation of Sunni Sufism in the archipelago in the 18th century. The teaching of Sufism is intended for public people or beginners with the aim that they have knowledge about the basic Sufism before knowing the Sufism teaching of wujudiyah which developed in the 18th century. By using a research library research approach and hermeneutic analysis, it can be seen that Neo Sufism teaching of Syekh al-Palimbani contained teachings about the importance of the practice of sharia before a person entered the practice of the tarekat. After that, the person can enter the world of Sufism by filling its mind with the practice of dhikr. Keywords: Neo Sufism, al-Palimbani, The book of Hidayah al-Sâlikîn Introduction Syekh al-Palimbani is an archipelago scholar who initiated the teaching of Neo Sufism or new Sufism in the 18th century. Neo Sufism teaching of al-Palimbani are as a place for the development of the Sufism-wujudiyah teachings which are disseminated through the Tuhfah al-Mursalah Book of ila Ruhin Nabi by Sheikh Burhanpuri. Wujudiyah teaching was developed rapidly from the 17th century in Aceh to the 18th century during the lifetime of Sheikh al-Palimbani. In the 18th century, the teachings of wujudiyah were still the topic of discussion for scholars, as evidenced by the fact that al-Palimbani had been assigned by his teacher - Sheikh Muhammad Saman - to learn the Book of Tuhfah al-Mursalah ila Ruhin Nabi. -

Urban Sufism, Media and Religious Change in Indonesia
URBAN SUFISM, MEDIA AND RELIGIOUS CHANGE IN INDONESIA Luthfi Makhasin Department of Political Science, Jenderal Soedirman University [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I contend that Sufism is only preoccupied with initiating new disciples and performing emotive religious rituals. By focusing on Naqshbandi-Haqqani, I argue that Sufi group actively involves in propagating its teaching to the general public. I also argue that Sufi movement actively involves in public campaign, along with other Muslim groups with similar religious outlook, to respond the perceived growing influence of Salafism and political Islamism among Indonesian Muslims. It represents contemporary public face of Sufism and Sufi activism in Indonesia. At the heart of the argument of this chapter is to examine collective efforts to maintain Sunni orthodoxy (Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah) as a dominant religious norm, reclaim Sufism as a legitimate voice within Sunni orthodoxy and general Muslim community, oppose to Salafism and political Islamism, and rationalise Sufism to academic community in Indonesia. This chapter will demonstrate that active propagation through the internet plays a significant role in generating new Islamic consciousness with greater appreciation toward Sufi tradition among Indonesian Muslims. Sufism contributes not only to shape public religious discourse/morality, influence consuming patterns of urban upper-middle class Muslims, but also maintain moderate and peaceful Islam in Indonesia. Keywords: Urban Sufism, Muslim Community, Media, Religious Change Luthfi Makhasin A. Shaping Popular Islamic Discourse and Media Campaign Written and oral forms of transmission become two main media through which Sufism shapes popular Islamic discourse within Muslim community. Written religious transmission takes the form of online publications on the internet and print publications in form of books, journals, and pamphlets, whereas oral transmission is expressed through Friday sermons (khutbah) and through preaching on television. -
