Eblen Charities Board of Directors Weekly Briefing 1/14/19 Eblen Charities Board of Directors Weekly Briefing 1/14/19 email: "[email protected] William Murdock" Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 10:56:54 AM Eastern Standard Time To: email: "[email protected] William Murdock" Bcc: email: "[email protected]" "All the beautiful sentiments in the world weigh less than a single lovely action.” James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) American poet, critic, editor, author, diplomat, iconoclast Please Remember Members of Our Eblen Family in Your Thoughts and Prayers Please remember those in our Eblen family who have suffered losses and are facing heath challenges the past few weeks. Our close friend and board member George Suggs lost his father on Friday after a long illness. Visitation at 1PM Tuesday January 15th at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. Service to follow in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at 2PM. Burial will take place at Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetary in Fairview will begin our 20th year of our Dental Sealant Program this Friday, January 13th on the campus of AB Tech in the new Ferguson Building at 8:30 AM. Longtime volunteer Linda Erwin passed away suddenly this week as well. She helped anchor the front desk on Thursday afternoons and was one of the many bright spots of our week. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Skyland United Methodist Church with Rev. Joy Moss officiating. Two of our wonderful longtime and invaluable employees have had loved ones who are facing medical challenges Kathy Conley’s family in Charlotte and Linda Enis, who’s husband Sam recently underwent a liver transplant but now is home and recovering. Few organizations have such a wonderful family as we do with our Eblen family and that have touched so many lives together. Thank you all for the love and care you give to each other as well as our whole community. Eblen License Plate Project Enters Final Month Last spring we began a unique project thanks to a very enterprising young lady at TC Roberson and her senior project. Amy Webster (niece of long-time friend and board member Tony Baldwin) has been part of Eblen ever since she was old enough to help collect and hand out school supplies and help share thousands of Her project is to get a state issued license plate for Eblen Charities. We have to sell 300 of them before we can turn in our application to the state legislation for approval. Once approved the new license plates will be mailed. The cost is $20 (donation to Eblen) in addition to your normal license fee but will be an ongoing revenue stream fo Eblen. We have sold nearly 170 of them so far thanks to our project chairman Matt Wright and our generous board members and friends. Our deadline is the end of this month. We will be contacting you all to see if you will join us in this project. I have also attached the information at the end of the newsletter. “I have always seen the license plates for other organizations, but one charity that was always lacking was Eblen. Since I was very young, my family and I have been involved with Eblen Charities and have always had a great appreciation for everything they have and continue to do in our community. I thought this would be a great way to get the name and mission of Eblen Charities out more, but also a way to combine my senior project with a charity I am very close to,” tells Amy. Dental Sealant Program Off to a Great Start We began our 20th year of our Dental Sealant Program this past Friday at AB Tech last Friday with the second graders from Johnston Elementary School. We will be at AB Tech each Friday between now and the end of May. As you know, the dental sealant program has been one of our flagship programs and has served more than 10,000 students since our first year. It is hard to imagine that the first class of students we saw that first day back in 1999 are through college. Thanks to board member Keith Black for his vision and leadership in creating the Dental Sealant Program, as well to Susan Riddle, Deborah Plemmons and Mary Ann McMinn for coordinating the program with all its pieces each week. “Eblen After Hours” Begins with “Full House” A great many thanks to all of our selfless staff and volunteers for once again opening our “Eblen After Hours” program lastTuesday. allowing us to see additional families who may have difficulty getting in before 5 o’clock. The “Eblen After Hours” program is open until 7:00 PM every Tuesday evening until the beginning of April. The extra hours allow us to see more clients and give us a greater opportunity to serve our clients who work during the day. Many, many thanks to our tremendous staff and volunteers not only for last Tuesday, but for staying almost every night until 6:30 or later in seeing the great number of clients seeking our help this past week as LIEAP expanded and the cold weather returned. Keller-Williams Broker Asheville Coat Drive Brings Warmth this Winter Winter has only started but we have already distributed thousands of coats and see clients on a daily basis in need of a warm coat to help get them through the winter. As most of you know, we have a tremendous Spring Clean Coat Drive with our friends and partners at WLOS at the end of March and collect and distribute coats all year long. This month we have been approached by Jeff Stewart’s Broker Asheville Team at Keller Williams as they have joined us in keeping those we serve warm as the cold winds of winter arrive. They will be collecting coats at their two locations from now until the end of the month. Our gratitude to everyone at KellerWilliams for their kindness and helping us make sure that no one is left out in the cold. What’s Coming Up… With a new year upon us, we are already setting course for our events and programs for 2019. We have a lot going on this year and here is the latest list. We are looking for volunteers as always, so please come and join us. • Throw a Party of One. Chef Anita Lo Is Serving up Delicious Recipes for Self
marketwatch.com/story/this-michelin-rated-chef-says-cooking-for-yourself-is-the-best-self-care-2018-10-30-11883742 By Jeanette Settembre Throw a party of one. Chef Anita Lo is serving up delicious recipes for self-love in her new cookbook: “Solo: A Modern Cookbook for a Party of One,” (Knopf, 2018) devoted to embracing those solitary moments in life. “It’s about celebrating you,” Lo told Moneyish of her second cookbook, out Tuesday. “We all need a little bit of time for ourselves. It’s nice to eat with people, but more often than not these days -- even if you’re in a long term relationship -- sometimes your spouses are working and you have to cook something for yourself.” Lo, a first generation Chinese-American who grew up in Birmingham, MI., has cooked in some of the world’s most renowned kitchens, including Bouley and Chanterelle in New York City. She opened her own restaurant in 2000, Annisa, serving upscale contemporary American cuisine in Greenwich Village for 17 years up until it closed last year. She held a Michelin star for nine consecutive years, served on “Top Chef Masters,” and became the first female guest chef to cook at the White House in 2015 for the Obamas. Now she’s here to tell eaters that solo meals don’t have to be boring or defrosted in a microwave, positioning herself as the ideal candidate to write the book. “I’ve been dumped almost as many times as I’ve been in relationships -- and I can count those on less than two hands … that’s a lot of solo meals,” she writes in the book.

ndless stretches of unspoiled wilderness, dotted across 37,000 acres. Ten miles E of the historic Blackfoot River. Three hundred head of resident elk. All nestled beneath the most brilliant starlit sky you’ve ever seen. While the beauty of Montana is unparalleled, if you ask us, it’s the people of The Resort at Paws Up® who make this a place you want to return to again and again. We love hearing from our guests and seeing The Resort through their eyes. And more often than not, it’s not just the things they did or the sights they saw—it was the staff member they were with who really made their experience special. We’re so fortunate to work with people who are passionate about what they do and love nothing more than to share their wisdom with others—whether our guests are seasoned pros or trying something for the very first time. Paws Up is home to chefs who don’t just place an order for supplies—they forage for ingredients in the forest. Our adventure guides go above and beyond to make sure that our guests have the time of their lives doing things they’ve never done before. And our wranglers consider this not just a job, but an honored family heritage that spans back generations. This is also a place brimming with artists and craftspeople who could find inspiration anywhere, and they choose to be here. It’s been said that we don’t remember the words that someone says to us, but we remember how they made us feel.

Taste After Party Tonight! THURSDAY, APRIL 19, 2012 • 6–9 PM • DIVI CARINA BAY RESORT FOR THE BENEFIT OF ST. CROIX FOUNDATION Celebrating St. Croix This year’s A Taste of St. Croix tribute can go out to none other than St. Croix itself. Over the years, the resilience and commitment of the people of St. Croix has proven itself time and time again. Creating a sense of family and unity, strength against all odds, the people of St. Croix are to be celebrated. The Unity. We are called The Big Island, but St. Croix has a feeling of closeness and unity. There is a sense of family among neighbors, coworkers, and even on the roads of St. Croix, where you can hear the distinct “toot toot” of the honk of car horns encouraging others to go before them. Working together to make a difference for the greater good: the people of St. Croix believe in each other and in our island. That is unity. It is St. Croix. The Strength of the people of St. Croix is unique; people talk to one another on the Big Island, we look each other in the eye, and feel the challenges and the triumphs that one another experience. There is no stronger and happier sound than someone laughing on a beach on St. Croix. The voices of St. Croix, strong and true, are testimony to their conviction that St. Croix is special and that its beauty, history, and future must be protected. The Community. St. Croix has come together, year after year, rising above natural disasters, political firestorms, economic recessions, and through it all has become all the stronger, a diverse and beautiful gem in the Caribbean.
