    ruises onon thethe fruitfruit B A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIRVANA & THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR MUSIC by Gary Vehar From the moment Nirvana’s landmark CD Nevermind was released, the world of rock music has never been the same. I for one will always be thankful that that album came out when it did, slightly over a week before my eighteenth birthday. I was a still-wet-behind-the-ears college freshman, away from home for the first time. Just as my life was changing drastically, so was the culture. Music, politics, fashion and art underwent an enormous change as the 90’s sloughed off the last vestiges of the 80’s. Concealed as I was in the quiet town of Ellensburg, Washington, within the tiny confines of my third-floor door room, it was the change in musical guard that first caught my attention. Friends from Seattle regularly brought over dubbed tapes to share with those of us here in college, and among one batch was an advance tape for a band called Nirvana. Nevermind was already causing excitement before its official release of September 24th, 1991. Leaving my friends for the night, I couldn’t get the songs, the sounds, out of my head. About a week later I was in yet another dorm room, listening to a brutish lout rave about the same album. Even at this early date it was obvious Nirvana was crossing all boundaries, even if the fellow who owned this copy (the real CD, this time) made fun of the over-the-top screams that so captivated me.

A 12-man jury is sent to Drama begin deliberations in the first-degree murder trial of an 18-year-old Latino accused in the stabbing death of his father - where a guilty verdict means an automatic death sentence. The case appears to be open-and-shut: The defendant has a weak alibi; a knife he claimed to have lost is found at the murder scene; and several witnesses either heard screaming - saw the killing or the boy fleeing the scene. Eleven of the jurors immediately vote guilty; only Juror No. 8 (Mr. Davis) casts a not guilty vote. At first Mr. Davis' bases his vote more so for the sake of discussion after all - the jurors must believe beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty.     Palem Candillier Nirvana : In Utero 1 Introduction Sperme, cancer, pores, maladie, hymen, parasite, lait, merde : les paroles d’In Utero sont le traité d’anatomie qui illustre le mieux l’expression journalistique « album viscéral ». Ringard depuis un moment, ce terme a pourtant l’air fait sur mesure pour le troisième disque de Nirvana, groupe fondé à Aberdeen en 1987 par Kurt Cobain (guitare, chant) et Krist Novoselic (basse). Devenu symbole absolu du rock alternatif des nineties et synonyme du genre « grunge », le trio rejoint sous sa forme définitive par le batteur Dave Grohl en 1990 signe avec ces douze chansons une apothéose musicale. Elle prendra aussi le rôle de chant du cygne, Cobain mettant fin à ses jours l’année suivant sa sortie, en 1994. In Utero est en effet le fruit du trajet de Nirvana, dont les débuts sont marqués par les riffs lourds des Melvins, le punk radical des Wipers et des Butthole Surfers et l’électricité de Led Zeppelin. Le premier album Bleach (1989) porte cet héritage à peine nuancé par quelques racines pop naturelles (« Je suis un admirateur des Beatles » clame Cobain) auxquelles est ajouté ensuite le minimalisme mélodique de groupes comme The Vaselines, The Breeders et les Pixies, qui aiguillent davantage le groupe en 1991 pour la conception de leur deuxième disque, Nevermind. Celui-ci rencontre un succès mondial, incontesté et surtout générationnel. Mais même si le leader de Nirvana assume entièrement son envie de porter sa musique au plus grand nombre, à l’inverse d’un certain esprit punk, autant Nevermind est le point de non-retour dans la notoriété du trio et la fin de sa tranquillité sociale et artistique.
