HELFORD RIVER SURVEY A survey of the Pisces (Fish) of the Helford Estuary A Report to the Helford Voluntary Marine Conservation Area Group funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature U.K. and English Nature P A Gainey 1999 1 Summary The Helford Voluntary Marine Conservation Area (hereafter HVMCA) was designated in 1987 and since that time a series of surveys have been carried out to examine the flora and fauna present. In this study no less that eighty species of fish have been identified within the confines of the HVMCA. Many of the more common fish were found to be present in large numbers. Several species have been designated as nationally scarce whilst others are nationally rare and receive protection at varying levels. The estuary is obviously an important nursery for several species which are of economic importance. A full list of the fish species present and the protection some of them receive is given in the Appendices Nine species of fish have been recorded as new to the HVMCA. Two acanthocephalan species (Neoechinorhynchus agilis in Liza aurata; Acanthocephaloides irregularis in Scorpaena porcus) and 4 nematode species (Hysterothylacium aduncum in Merlangius merlangus euxinus, Trachurus mediterraneus, Engraulis encrasicholus, Belone belone, Caspialosa sp., Sciaena umbra, Scorpaena porcus, Liza aurata, Spicara smaris, Gobius niger, Sarda sarda, Uranoscopus scaber, and Mullus barbatus; Anisakis pegreffii in Trachurus mediterraneus; Philometra globiceps in Uranoscopus scaber and Trachurus mediterraneus; and Ascarophis sp. in Scorpaena porcus) were found in the intestines of their hosts. H.* Summary: Résumé : UNE RÉVISION DE LA FAMILLE ARHYTHMACANTHIDAE (ACANTHOCEPHALA) ET UNE DESCRIPTION D'UNE ESPÈCE NOUVELLE DE Heterosentis hirsutus n. sp. is described from Cnidoglanis CNIDOGLANIS MACROCEPHALA (PLOTOSIDAE) EN AUSTRALIE macrocephala (Siluriformes: Plotosidae) from the Swan Estuary, Western Australia. It is distinguished by having 14 longitudinal Heterosentis hirsutus n. sp. est décrite de Cnidoglanis rows of 6-7 hooks per row on the proboscis, a trunk armed macrocephala (Siluriformes: Plotosidae) du Swan Estuary, Australie anteriorly and posteriorly (=genital spines) with minute spines and occidentale. L'espèce est distinguée par la présence de 14 files lemnisci that may extend to the posterior margin of the proboscis longitudinales de 6-7 crochets chacune sur le proboscis, un tronc receptacle. ALLEN Australian Museum, Sydney, Australia Currently over 4000 species of fishes are known from Australia. An analysis ofdistribution patterns of 3800 species is presented. Over 20% of the species are endemic to Australia, with endemic species occuiring primarily in southern Australia. There is also a small component of the fauna which is found only in the southwestern Pacific (New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and New Zealand). The majority of the other species are widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean. South Pacific Commission, Nouméa, New Caledonia The Oceanic Fisheries Programme of the South Pacific Commission is currently pursuing a research project on age and growth of two tropical tuna species, yellowfm tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). The daily periodicity of microincrements forrned with the sagittal otoliths of these two spceies has been validated by oxytetracycline marking in previous studies. These validation studies have come from fishes within three regions of the Pacific (eastem, central and western tropical Pacific). Otolith microincrements are counted along transverse section with a light microscope. -

The list 24 is based on historical literature records and new revisions. The ichthyofauna list is 25 composed by 397 species very diversified in 2 superclass, 3 class, 35 orders, 139 1 1 families and 288 genus. The order Perciformes is the most diverse one with 37 families, 2 91 genus and 135 species. Gobiidae (19 species) and Sparidae (19 species) are the 3 richest families. Biogeographically, the Lusitanian group includes 203 species (51.1%), 4 followed by 149 species of the Atlantic (37.5%), then 28 of the Boreal (7.1%), and 17 5 of the African (4.3%) groups. We have recognized 41 new records, and 3 other records 6 have been identified as doubtful. -

Most of the 21 species of barracuda occur in schools, highlighting the observation that predatory as well as prey fishes form aggregations (Chapters 19, 20, 22). Blackfins grow to about 1 m length, display the silvery coloration typical of water column dwellers, and are frequently encountered by divers around Indo-Pacific reefs. Barracudas are fast-start predators (Chapter 8), and the pan-tropical Great Barracuda, Sphyraena barracuda, frequently causes ciguatera fish poisoning among humans (Chapter 25). For the first question I used life history theory to examine whether survival was inferred to have improved in two fish families which have independently made the transition onto land: Gobiidae and Blenniidae. I examined growth and various aspects of reproductive investment among terrestrial and aquatic species, finding that differences varied according to the level of independence from water. This was consistent with improved survival for certain age classes on land. Nevertheless, the details of life history change differed in each family, with the greatest increases in survival implied for early age classes in Blenniidae, but older age classes in Gobiidae. This suggests fundamental differences in the way the colonization of land occurred in each family. For the second question I investigated the consequences of predataon and density on life hastory variation among frve populations of the Pacific leaping blenny A/ficus amoldorum. -
