He was the second of thirteen children (eight boys and five girls) born to Will and Clara Hairston. Will Hairston moved his family from Crawford to the Birmingham area in 1922. The primary reason for the move was to find better work so that he could support his large family. Will became a coal miner and worked alongside Garnett Bankhead who was the father of the five Bankhead brothers who all played in the Negro Leagues. By 1930 Will had gained employment with American Cast Iron and Pipe (ACIPCO) as a laborer in their pipe shop. According to United States census records the Hairston family also lived in North Birmingham and Sayreton. Sam spent his formative years in Hooper City and attended Hooper City High School. Reportedly Sam did not finish high school and when he was 16 he told the employment office at ACIPCO that he was 18 and was given a job working for the company. According to Sam he went to work to help support the family and give his brothers and sisters the opportunity to go to school.

    Long Beach Century Club Member Information Packet “Over 500 Members and Growing” Who is the Century Club? The Long Beach Century Club consists of over 500 men and women who care deeply about assisting youth who are involved in sports in Long Beach. The mission since 1957 has been to support these athletes and teams when they require financial assistance to enhance program growth and the opportunity to compete where they otherwise could not do so. This support has allowed individuals and teams to compete in all corners of the globe, often returning to Long Beach with national and world championships. Every local sport has benefited from Century Club funds. Continuous support is also given to athletes participating in the Special Olympics. Over the years our membership has contributed approximately $2.5 million to support local programs. Governance The Century Club operates under member approved By-Laws. These by-laws spell out how we are governed, how Board members are elected, defines their duties, sets the dues structure, defines financial parameters, and much more. The Board meets regularly to conduct the business of the non-profit. A copy of the current by-laws is included at the end of this document. What Members Receive Once individuals become new members, the membership chair adds them to our master roster. All new members receive an official name badge which is distributed and worn during major events and an online password protected membership directory with members name, email and phone, which is updated on a regular basis. As youngsters we may have sorted our cards by number or favorite players. The kids on my block in the 50s played baseball dice games with their cards. Snake eyes, or a one and a one, was a homerun whether Ted Williams was batting or Ted Abernathy. Organizing the teams While the game didn’t make any statistical sense, it did make sense to us to have your “singles” organized by team, all ready to go for the dice games. The teams were kept current by checking the daily sports section for player transactions. If Enos Slaughter got traded to the Yankees, his card was promptly removed from the St. Louis Cardinals’ stack and moved to the Yanks. Sometimes we created cards for rookies not yet appearing on their own card or put the right uniforms on traded players by doctoring a duplicate of a similar-looking player. Minor leaguers, retirees, and deceased If a player went back to the minors, he went into a stack at the back of my card box. If I knew he had retired, he went into another stack. There weren’t too many deceased player cards, but they may have had their own section as well. Had I continued organizing and updating my cards from the 50s, I would now have no one with any team (unless you count those employed as goodwill ambassadors or spring training coaches).
