Singing at the White House with Zemer Chai

Thursday December 5, 2013, Eighth Day of Chanukah, 2nd of Tevet 5774

By Cantor Yehoshua Redfern

It was a picture perfect warm sunny December day in the nation’s capital. Zemer Chai, Washington DC’s premier Jewish choir, founded and led by gifted artistic director, Eleanor Epstein, was singing at the White House Chanukah party.

We arrived at approximately 1:30 p.m. and met our host White House intern, Clevys. He would be our guide throughout the afternoon. It was somewhat surreal, this feeling that we were entering the home of almost all of the presidents of this great country.

Our intern led us on our informal tour of the White House, which was elaborately decorated in honor of the holiday season. There was so much to see, aside from the preparations for the Chanukah dinner, a strictly kosher affair.

We briefly spotted the solid brass Statue of Liberty Chanukah Menorah, designed by Manfred Anson, a Holocaust survivor, which was used for the afternoon lighting ceremony.

Our performance took place in the East Garden Room, as the guests to the special Chanukah Dinner were arriving and departing. Among the selections were Israeli choral works and a selection from one of our favorite composers, 16th century Salomoni Rossi, “Halleluyah” - Psalm 146. These selections were just part of our White House repertoire.

Notable guests included Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Senator Al Franken, Alan Dershowitz, Nathan Lewin, and many other prominent Rabbis and Jewish lay leaders from all over the US.

The East Garden Room had great acoustics. Eleanor was astounded by our sound as we began to warm up. The room was decorated with a holiday tree made of books next to a large bust of President Abraham Lincoln and on the other side of the room were life size replicas of the First Dogs, “Bo” and “Sunny”.

We were pleased to see that in the official White House Blog and the official program we were mentioned as part of the entertainment for the afternoon festivities.

At around 3:30 p.m. we proceeded to the room where we were to have a formal picture taken with President and Mrs. Obama. At about 4 p.m. we met the President and First Lady and we all shook hands with them. Of course some of us had a few fleeting moments to “shmooze “ with the most powerful leader in the world along with the First Lady. We sang for the President and First Lady for only ONE MINUTE, but it was a great minute!

As the afternoon drew to a close, we performed again in the East Garden Room as the guests were leaving the reception. One young couple started ballroom dancing to our music. They announced to the choir that they were formally engaged and we, of course, started singing

Outcome of Special Congregational Meeting held December 23, 2013

Fifty-eight congregants attended this special congregational meeting.

Vote to Renew Rabbi Saks’s Contract: The majority of the congregants in attendance voted to renew Rabbi Saks’s contract for a four year period, beginning August 1, 2014.

Amendment to the By-laws: The congregation approved an amendment to the AKSE By-laws to add a provision for the position of co-president. The following is what will be added to ARTICLE VIII. DUTIES OF THE PRESIDENT, as Item No. 7:

If in the instance that there is not one single President, the Board of Governors may vote to allow the functions of President to be divided between two co-Presidents for part or all of a particular fiscal year. In such a case, all by-law provisions pertaining to the nomination, election, duties, and powers of President shall instead apply to co-Presidents.

Review of Status of Various AKSE Options: You will recall that in November 2012 I invited you, the congregation, to submit ideas and concepts with respect to AKSE’s future. A congregational meeting took place in December of 2012 to review those concepts with the congregation. Following are the major concepts that the Board of Governors have been reviewing through 2013:

1. Sell building – downsize a. Decided that this is something not to be pursued at this time 2. Create a second, parallel egalitarian service in addition to current traditional non-egalitarian service a. This did not win majority support from the BOG 3. Consider co-location with CBS a. Several president to president meetings. Former AKSE presidents Harriet Ainbinder, John Elzufon and Ron Makar met with current and past presidents of CBS. Determined that this is something that we did not need to pursue at this time 4. Financial: several options discussed.

It was announced that I would be chairing the Nominations Committee to select positions for the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee. If you are interested in being considered for a position either on the Board of Governors or the Executive Committee, please contact me at [email protected]

WHAT'S COOKING IN YOUR KITCHEN? I was glancing through my recipes and found a favorite appetizer. I don’t know if you are into Pesto Sauce or Tortellini, but once you try this you will find so many uses for each.

Pesto Sauce is so easy to make. It is wonderful over warm or hot pasta, great topped on baked fish, blended with some mayo makes a great pasta salad dressing, as a dip when softened cream cheese and a bit of milk is added (serve with pita chips or veggies) it is a good dip, even a dollop on scrambled eggs with melted cheese would be a delicious flavor. Here is a recipe that you can find many uses for. Allergic to nuts??? Just eliminate them. Using it for meat, eliminate the cheese or try soy cheese. And try this recipe with couchette pasta not tortellini because they have cheese filling. If you are a vegetarian this is a perfect recipe to keep on file.

Pesto Sauce Chop these ingredients in your food processor - 1/2 cup parsley, 1 Tablespoon Almonds or Pine Nuts, 1 teaspoon basil or flat leaf parsley, 1 clove garlic, 1/4 teaspoon salt. When finely chopped stop the machine and add 1/3 cup olive oil and 1 cup parmesan cheese. Pulse it a few more times and voila! You have Pesto Sauce.

My old and trusty recipe for Pesto Tortellini Appetizer is to pour this sauce over a 1/2 lb., cooked, drained, cooled cheese Tortellini. Fold it together and place in a serving bowl, it can be made ahead of time to blend flavors. Serve at room temperature with toothpicks.

If you have leftover sauce add some olive oil to it and enjoy it as a dipping sauce with crusty bread.

If you have not added Tortellini to your menus this next recipe is for a Thai Tortellini Fritter. It looks more complicated than it is and tastes great. Before I made this I had to read it several times and get myself geared for the process. These fritters were so good we (with company) ate the whole batch! I hate to fry, but a bite of this was worth the cholesterol and calories.

9 oz. of cheese tortellini cooked according to package directions, drain and cool.

While tortellini is cooking, set up a breading station. Whisk 2 large eggs with 1 1/2 cups mayonnaise and 8 Tablespoons of Thai Chili sauce (optional, see note below)* in bowl no. 1, Put 1/4 cup self-rising flour in bowl no. 2. Mix 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs and 1 cup unsweetened dried grated coconut* and 1 teaspoon salt or to taste in bowl no. 3. While the tortellini is cooling line a 9 x 14 cookie sheet with parchment paper.

When tortellini is ready, cool and dry, toss it in the flour first. Mix tortellini gently with egg/mayo mixture in bowl no. 2. Then take a few tortellini at a time and roll in the panko crumb mixture in bowl no. 3. Place the tortellini fritters on the cookie sheet and chill for 1 - 2 hours.

Pour oil (recipe calls for 3 cups of corn oil, I try to use less and not corn oil, I prefer vegetable oil) into a wok or deep frying pan heated to 375 degrees. Fry tortellini in small batches until golden brown. They brown in less than 1/2 a minute. Drain on paper towels and serve hot with the remaining Thai Chili sauce/ mayo mixture and add a bit of lime juice. *That is your choice. A good cocktail sauce would be nice for this recipe, too. A sweet sauce like duck sauce would be a wonderful dip for these fritters. * A note about the coconut is that I found finely grated dried coconut in Shop Rite when I did my Passover shopping in Cherry Hill. It worked well. You can just food process coconut, but I will bet just using bagged coconut would taste great, too.

I know this recipe is long, but these are so yummy and worth a try. They are good with a dairy dinner or lunch, too! Enjoy your tortellini anyway you like and make great use of the pesto sauce, I hope you enjoy these recipes and have a wonderful January until next time Meryl

Dear participants of the June 15 Israel trip, those still considering becoming part of the trip and the Jewish Community at large:

Per Rabbi Michael, Rabbi Steven and Rabbi Yair, we now have a complete schedule, January through April. Rabbi Michael might want to pick up another Hebrew class in May, but we will leave this for now. These classes are designed for those going on the AKSE-Beth Emeth-Beth Shalom Israel trip in June but open to the entire community, and free of charge.

January 26: Understanding The Politics of Israel, Rabbi Robinson, Congregation Beth Emeth February 9, Israeli History, Rabbi Saks, Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth March 23, Basic Hebrew, Rabbi Beals, Congregation Beth Shalom April 13: Israel through poetry and literature, Rabbi Robinson, Congregation Beth Emeth

All classes meet on Sunday afternoons, 4-5:30 pm and, again, are free and open to the community, in preparation for our June joint-synagogue trip to Israel. This might be the first time EVER in the State of Delaware that Orthodox, Conservative and Reform-trained rabbis are leading a group synagogue trip of this kind. It is newsworthy and inspirational!

If you have any questions or would like additional information on these sessions or the trip itself, please feel free to contact me at your convenience. L'Hitraot.

(Continued from page 8) Siman Tov Umazal Tov. Other departing guests entering our performance started to dance along with the future Chasan and Kallah. We were then told by another departing guest that this new Kallah, an attorney for United Jewish Federation, had arranged for the new memorial on Chaplains Hill at Arlington Cemetery that recognizes the sacrifices of 14 rabbis killed on active military service, which was dedicated on October 24, 2011.

As the sun was setting we could see from the East Garden Room the Ellipse where the Chabad National Menorah was lit. A beautiful end to a beautiful day.

The Torah reading that morning had been from Parshat Naso, describing the special offerings in honor of the dedication of the Altar in the Wilderness. The Eighth day’s reading continued on to the beginning of the next parsha B’haalot’cha which describes Aaron the Kohen Gadol, High Priest, lighting the 7 lamps of the special Menorah as part of the daily Temple service. According to Nachmanides, the 12th century Jewish interpreter of our Holy Texts, the lighting of the menorah by Aaron alludes to the Chanukah story almost 14 centuries later. The Menorah lit by Aaron and the special gifts from all of the Hebrew tribes represent gratitude and thanks to Hashem.

To these thanks I add my own for so many blessings – family and friends, and to be a part of Zemer Chai and Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth.
