Under 14 Female State Championships 2016/17 4

Welcome Message Dear Under 14 Female State Championship Official, Congratulations on being appointed as an Under-14 Female State Championship

official for your team. With the success of the WBBL last season we hope to see even more girls use the State Championship competition as a springboard to this level and become future representative players. Female Cricket at a youth level continues to flourish, in no small part due to the efforts of various female development officers and team officials from within particular regions, as well as the work of our Game & Market Development staff including our wonderful Regional Cricket Managers. These Championships have continued to prosper in the standard of play and general standing in the Victorian Cricket Program, and it is hoped this year we will again see further improvements in the skill sets and game sense on show. With two Victorian teams in the WBBL – Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars – the competition provides a clear pathway for female cricketers from grassroots to elite with Junior Female Development Grants being introduced by Cricket Victoria supporting the pathway by enabling more opportunities for girls to play cricket at grassroots level. Last year we saw previous State Championship players Sophie Molineux and Alana King to name just two, make a real impact in their debut WBBL season and our Victorian Under 18 Female State side has an amazing national Carnival as well, returning home with the title for only the second time. Our Victorian Under 15 side also had great success winning seven out of eight games to finish 3rd in the National Championships. This manual has been designed to provide all involved with a comprehensive overview of what is required of officials before, during and after the competition. Please take note of the rules summary for season 2016/17. We wish you and your team all the best for the Under 14 Female State Championships.

Yours sincerely,

SECTION ONE – General State Championship Information Competition Coaching Philosophy The aim of the State Championship competition is to develop young cricketers to the maximum of their current ability. To achieve their potential players are to be coached in such a way that develops: the skills, physical attributes and cricket knowledge, and the personal characteristics and self-esteem of each player. Cricket Victoria believes that the above development can be maximised in an environment that:  Emphasises individual player development rather than team success  Emphasises individual contribution as an essential component in a team environment  Considers the players long term participation in cricket at a variety of levels  Promotes a balanced approach to the players lifestyle The State Championships via the conduct and coaching of the competition prepares and encourages players not playing Premier Cricket to continue playing cricket at a level commensurate to the players’ ability. Whilst each region will strive to win each scheduled match, the emphasis that each coaching group must focus on is developing the player and allowing the players and officials to enjoy a quality experience. The Championships form part of the talented player pathway and many of the best representative players have made their mark in the series. 1.1 Age Qualification The age qualification for all Cricket Victoria State Championship Programs is 1st September. For the Under 14 Female State Championships a player must have been born on or after 1st September 2002. 1.2 Cricket Victoria Policies The Cricket Victoria State Championships adheres to all policies set out in the ‘Well

Play will then conclude when one of the following occurs:

 The team batting second receives its full allocation of overs

 The team batting second is deemed all out and their innings closed with the fall 2 0 1 6 / 1 7 of the 20th wicket.

5. Calculation of Score – Interrupted Matches (Including ALL Finals) 1. In the event of a delayed start or interruption to play during the innings of the

team batting first, the umpires shall insofar as possible, attempt to minimise the HAMPIONSHIPS

C differences in time and overs available for each innings. The umpires shall advise both captains of the number of overs and of the allotted time calculated for each

T A T E innings.

S

23 Under 14 Female State Championships 2016/17 2. In the event of a delayed start or interruption to play during the innings of the team batting first, the umpires shall reduce that number of overs to be bowled by each side, that number remaining the same for each team. The number of overs to be bowled in each innings shall be reduced by one over for each complete seven (7) minutes of total time lost during the first innings. The amount of time allocated for each innings shall be reduced by half the time lost. 3. In the event of an interruption to play which prevents the team batting second from receiving the same number of overs as the team batting first, the umpires shall reduce the number of overs to be faced in the second innings by one over for every three and one half (3.5) minutes of time lost. 4. If reduction calculation results in less than 10 overs (per innings) the match shall be abandoned. This is unless the target score that would be applicable to the team batting second having faced the minimum amount of overs indicated above, has been exceeded, in which case the team batting second would be declared the winners. 5. Cricket Victoria also has a Heat Policy relating to State Championship matches. In the event that a match is stopped due to heat, the same adverse weather calculations apply. This appears in Appendix M. 6. The Deciding Scoresheet (18.5.4 – CV Premier Handbook; see appendix S) will be used in all interrupted matches.

6. Point and Team Averages. The following point applies:  Win 4 points  Tie 2 points each  No result 2 points each  Loss 0 point When determining rankings following the preliminary rounds the following measures shall be used:

 Points.  When points are equal – Net Run Rate will be used (see below). o Net Run Rate is the difference between the average of runs scored per

2 0 1 6 / 1 7 over by a team and the average of runs per over scored against it.  In a game where a team has been dismissed before its allotted overs, the full entitlement of overs must be used in the calculation.

7. Uniforms & Equipment

HAMPIONSHIPS  Region team playing shirts, with numbers, white cricket pants and region team cap C are to be worn.

 On the field of play, thigh pads must be worn under pants.

24 Under 14 Female State Championships 2016/17  No jewellery (watches, etc.) that may reflect the sunlight and inconvenience the striker shall be worn on the field of play.  Batters must wear pads, gloves and a helmet with a face grill at all times.

8. Pitch Covers Covers shall be used at the discretion of the curator up to the start of play on each day of all matches. From then on, the Umpires shall direct and supervise the laying and removal of covers when interruptions occur.

9. Team Official to Stand with Square Leg Umpire  One of the team officials is required to stand with the Square Leg Umpire when their team is fielding.  The team official can assist the fielding teams’ captain for the entire State Champions (except finals).  They may assist with field placement and bowling changes ONLY through the captain  The time taken to assist must not impede the playing of the game.  They are encouraged to use this to guide the captain, not captain themselves.  If any coach is deemed to be hindering the flow of the game, affecting the concentration of the fielders or batters, or distracting the umpire, they will be asked to leave the field of play by the umpire.

A series of 4 matches shall be played between all 16 teams. At the end of the series the teams shall be ranked in order of 1 to 4 for each pool. The top ranked teams for each pool will play in the major semi-finals. The winner of semi-final 1 (pools 1 & 3) will play against the winner of semi-final 2 (pools 2 & 4) in the final. Final: Semi-final 1 winner vs. Semi-final 2 winner The loss of 10 wickets in an innings in a semi-final or final constitutes an end to the innings. During the semi-final stage, when the result is a tie, draw or abandoned the highest ranked team will progress. If both teams are ranked equally in their pool, the team with the most wins will go through. If both teams have won the same amount of matches, Net Run Rate in the pool stage will determine the team that advances through. The Deciding Scoresheet (18.6.5 – CV Premier Handbook; see appendix S) will be used in all interrupted matches. In the event of a tie, the title will be shared between both teams. In the event the Final is washed out, CV will exhaust all options to re-fixture the Final.

39 Under 14 Female State Championships 2016/17 APPENDIX N – TALENT IDENTIFICATION AND STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM SELECTION POLICY The following is some direction for coaches in selecting State Championship squads. Whilst Officials are appointed by Regions, ultimately they are employed by Cricket Victoria as an important part of the whole Talent Identification and development process that identifies and nurtures young talent leading into State Youth teams and Premier Cricket. Effective Selection Process Selection of State Championship teams is a difficult and challenging process. Trying to balance the combination of giving all players an effective opportunity to show their wares and stake their claims for selection, with the pressures of making sure it is not a process that takes an extended amount of time in light of other commitments that these players will have in a cricket sense (e.g. club cricket, school cricket, Senior cricket, other representative cricket). Further balancing is also required in ensuring the selection process not only takes into consideration skill sets of the players, but also their ability to adapt and cope to game situations. Ensure a Positive Selection Process Within the actual selection process and squad culling, it is important that the process is a positive one for all players involved. Pure sums dictate that the vast majority who trial will actually miss out on selection with the possibility that the process has negative connotations. All State Championship officials should approach the selection process not only as a way of selecting the squad but also as a coaching opportunity to develop players within their region. This by no means suggests that it becomes a full on coaching session, but all players should be able to take away a positive coaching point from each session they attend. Balanced Squads As with any cricket team selection, one of the great challenges is to get a balanced squad with the best players in each skill set involved, whilst trying, where possible, to incorporate as many skill sets as you can into the process. It is recommended that this

includes at least two spin bowling options in any team as they have a good strike rate

of success at State Championships. With most junior teams, most of the better players seem to be skilled in a couple of disciplines making it easy to incorporate a wide

variety of skills into any team at the higher levels. For State underage teams the 2 0 1 6 / 1 7 selectors are working towards a model very similar to what is outlined above. By doing this at a regional level, we are providing them with a variety of options across the best players at each skill set for them to work into the best squad to represent the State at a National Championships.

HAMPIONSHIPS C

T A T E

S

40 Under 14 Female State Championships 2016/17 Bravery in Selection The State Championships are a combination of identifying and promoting players with talent who may be able to represent the State whilst giving the team a good opportunity to possibly win the State Championship. At the younger age groups, there is a distinct chance that those with skill sets that may give them a chance to represent the State, may at times have inconsistency and downside to their performances that may very well compromise the teams chance to win the State Championship if they have a bad week. Examples of this could be the express pace quick bowler or spinner who puts good revolutions on the ball, both at the expense of control at times, or the dour batter who could be a Sheffield Shield opening batter but whose style doesn’t suit the limited over matches that are played at a State Championships. With a holistic view for Victorian and Australian cricket in the long term, we encourage you to make the brave selection rather than the safe selection. These players need to be seen and tested at this level to see whether they have what it takes to cut it at higher levels. This could compromise the chances of the team at the championships but could also enhance your chances. With great risk sometimes comes great reward. Talent Identification Process Post Championships At the conclusion of the Championships, you as a State Championship Official will be asked to work with your Regional Cricket Manager in assessing the players within your squad. You will be asked to rate them under one of the following categories:  Category A - player who you strongly believe will play State youth cricket at their age group next season  Category B - player who you believe is a very good chance to play State youth cricket next season and should be monitored.  Category C - player who will be monitored by Region as not at skill level required for state based programs.  Category D - player who will be monitored through club cricket as still has to develop further as a regional player. You will also be asked to assess your players on where they are currently at in relation to the different skill sets of the game (batting, bowling, fielding, wicket keeping and character), and also what they could potentially reach as an adult cricketer. This is done using 20/80 reporting that is used through talent identification right throughout

Australia. 2 0 1 6 / 1 7

Ratings for Senior Cricket 30 = Local Cricket 40 = Premier Cricket 1st XI Level 50 = State Level (Bushrangers and Spirit contracted players) 60 = International Level (Jon Holland, Grace Harris) 70 = International Good Level ( Kristen Beams, Aaron Finch) 80 = International Elite Level (, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc)

This feedback will be cross checked with a number of other measures in establishing training squads for the following year’s State Youth teams. You will be asked to make comment on players from other regions (fastest bowlers, biggest spinners etc.). This

will all be forwarded to you at the conclusion of the Championships.

44 Under 14 Female State Championships 2016/17 APPENDIX Q – PSYCHOLOGY OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT While much of a coaches time is spent developing the physical, technical and tactical components of a players performance, psychological factors contribute greatly to overall performance. Coaches who consider the psychological components of cricket are best placed to develop cricketers who maximise their performance. Coaches need to ensure they spend time understanding how to develop the mental side of their players’ games, and to integrate these ideas into their daily training and coaching. In addition to the requisite Psychological Skills Training (e.g., goal setting, arousal control, self-talk - See Orlick, 2016 below for an excellent summary) helping players develop attitudes and approaches that are consistent with optimal performance is central to their development.

Mindsets A key element in any coaching role, and particularly important in State Championship Cricket, is to help players continually develop their games. A crucial element to this is a player’s mindset. When considering mindsets we are looking at a players’ beliefs; the lens through which they fundamentally see the world. There are two types of mindsets - Fixed and Growth.  Fixed Mindset - “People believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success - without effort.” (Dweck, 2006)  Growth Mindset - “People believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work - brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” (Dweck, 2006) These fundamental differences in how a player sees the world impacts on their thoughts and behaviours when playing, training, and in the habits they develop around cricket. A summary of these tendencies are in the table below: Fixed Mindset Characteristics Growth Mindset Characteristics  Avoids Challenges  Loves Challenges

 Effort is a bad thing – if you have  Enjoys effort – hard work and to try hard you’re not very effort mean’s you’re learning talented  Capitalises on mistakes

2 0 1 6 / 1 7  Hides mistakes  Persists in the face of  Gives up easily when faced with obstacles/setbacks obstacles/challenges  Learns from negative feedback  Ignores useful negative feedback  Inspired by others’ success

 Is threatened by others’ success HAMPIONSHIPS

45 Under 14 Female State Championships 2016/17 As a coach being able to help players develop Growth Mindsets that are about working hard and continual improvement leads to better outcomes. As coaches, you should:  Be aware of your own beliefs about mindsets and any hidden messages within your feedback. E.g., consoling a player after a poor performance by saying “Don’t worry. You have the ability and will do better next time” implies that they have a set amount of ability and limited room for growth.  Use appropriate praise to foster development of the player.  Focus on using a growth mindset to praise processes, effort and dedication. E.g., “Your effort and application to what you have been working on was really good.”  Use constructive criticism to assist the player in overcoming challenges. E.g., when dismissed after many dot balls “You had the right idea to see off the bowler, next time practice re-focussing after each ball.” A summary of the Mindsets, and how focussing on effort and growth impacts thinking, expectations, and behaviour can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/NWv1VdDeoRY

Problem Solving A player’s mindset will be tested most strongly when faced with a situation where they are under pressure, or when their resources are being stretched (e.g., difficult conditions, facing the new ball, a tight game). Helping players to be prepared for these times by providing them with a framework will aid their adoption of a growth mindset and enhance their coping skills. A Problem Solving approach is one such framework. It minimizes the thoughts and emotions experienced when a challenging situation presents, and allows players to act on solutions quickly. It will result in less negative coping styles where the tendency is to be avoidant (e.g., not wanting to play, trying to avoid batting or bowling), or overly emotionally driven (e.g., getting angry and playing a rash shot, getting worried and bowling too conservatively). The following framework can be applied to performance related situations, or in life generally; 1. Define the problem

2. Generate all possible solutions 3. Choose the most appropriate solution and implement it

4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the solution 2 0 1 6 / 1 7 Much of the planning for encountering difficult situations should be carried out during trainings, and pre or post game discussions. Being able to effectively plan for situations and having pre-pared solutions is important in players adopting a problem solving approach. Once they have these skills in place they will better placed to apply this framework, think on

their feet while playing, and effectively problem solve challenges during play. Ultimately it HAMPIONSHIPS

C will produce more positive outcomes for players and the team can learn from one another.

RICER For all acute injuries (muscle strain, rolled ankle, hit with ball, neck pain radiating into arm after bowling etc), use RICER first. If that aggravates the injury, then try a heat pack. RICER will minimise the swelling and provide pain relief RICER is the RECIPE for SUCCESS Rest  Remove from play, reduce load through area  E.g. rolled ankle, stop playing and reduce walking Ice  20 mins every 2 hrs, preferably icy water or bag of ice  Use frozen peas or place wet towel in freezer if no ice is available Compression  Use stretchy bandage, tubigrip or skins to compress the area  E.g. stretchy bandage or tight socks for rolled ankle  E.g. skins for corked thigh Elevation  keep body part above the level of the heart  E.g. rolled ankle placed on arm of couch, placed on pillow to sleep Referral  Refer to physio/medical personnel for further assessment

Blisters Blisters are a bubble of fluid under the skin, which becomes a protective barrier from friction or rubbing. Treatment before/during game:  Put Fixomull or blister pad over blister with no crinkles  Put Vaseline inside heel of shoe/boot & on the heel of sock – lets heel slide inside boot Treatment at Home:  Disinfect with Dettol, Betadine  Cover with band-aid if wearing shoes, getting dirty to prevent infection  Don’t pull/cut off dead skin, it forms protection from infection

47 Under 14 Female State Championships 2016/17 Corks/Hematomas A corkie is bruising in the muscle; it’s the pooling of blood in the muscle from broken blood vessels. It’s a common sports injury, often from body collisions or direct trauma (hit with cricket ball etc.). The forceful impact compresses the muscle against the bone, causing swelling, bruising and pain.

Treatment During Game:  Gently rub Deep Heat/Dencorub onto bruise/impact  Apply stretchy bandage around cork, place rigid tape over ends to hold down  Continue playing – the heat distracts the player from the pain & the compression reduces the swelling & pain After Game:  RICER

Muscle Cramp Causes:  Dehydration – lose water & electrolytes (sodium, calcium) through sweat  Fatigue – fitness levels, unaccustomed activity  Poor Conditioning – poor warm-up & stretching before activity  Electrolyte Imbalance – sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphate Treatment:  Stretch muscle for 60 seconds, sustained stretch relaxes muscle  E.g. downward dog position for calf, hamstring stretch  Rub with Deep Heat or Dencorub

 Hydrate – Hydralyte, Gatorade, water etc. Prevention:  Keep hydrated

2 0 1 6 / 1 7  Warm up properly
