The subject of the inscriptions was manifold, but most of them described various period- ending ceremonies connected to the passage of time. Within this general framework, statements contained information about the most culturally significant life-events of their commissioners. This information was organized according to discursive norms involving the application of literary devices such as parallel structures, difrasismos, ellipsis, etc. Each center had its own variations and preferences in applying such norms, which changed during the six centuries of Classic Maya civilization. Epigraphers have thus far rarely investigated Classic Maya political discourse in general and its regional-, site-, and period-specific features in particular. It is possible to posit very general variations, for example the presence or absence of secondary elite inscriptions, which makes the Western Maya region different from other areas of the Maya Lowlands (Bíró 2011). There are many other discursive differences not yet thoroughly investigated. It is still debated whether these regional (and according to some) temporal discursive differences related to social phenomena or whether they strictly express literary variation (see Zender 2004). The resolution of this question has several implications for historical solutions such as the collapse of Classic Maya civilization or the hypothesis of status rivalry, war, and the role of the secondary elite. There are indications of ruler-specific textual strategies when inscriptions are relatively uniform; that is, they contain the same information, and their organization is similar. -

The Maya soon developed one of the great civilizations of the ancient world, well known for its impressive ruins, temple pyramids and palaces, stone sculptures, and elaborate hieroglyphic writing system. The Maya experienced profound changes and disruptions throughout their history and development, including the so-called “collapse” of many cities around 800-900 AD. The arrival of the Spanish in the sixteenth century and the British in the 18th century then brought near destruction to their world, but Maya peoples emerged resilient in the wake of conquest in what are now the modern nations of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. Today six million strong, the modern Maya continue to express their cultural identity in the art and politics of modern Mexico and Central America. Their cultural legacy has left its mark on northern Central America in many ways, and the tortured indigenous history of the region continues to shape the politics of our own time. Course Objectives: This class prepares students on the history of the Maya of Guatemala and Belize, spanning the Pre-Columbian, Colonial, and modern times, and provides the literature and visual culture background for the Maymester study abroad course on Maya Art and Architecture (ARH 347M) taking place in Guatemala and Belize. -

Mesoweb Publications The Rulers of Palenque INTRODUCTION The unsung pioneer in the study of Palenque’s dynastic history is Heinrich Berlin, who in three seminal studies (Berlin 1959, 1965, 1968) provided the essential outline of the dynasty and explicitly identified the name glyphs and likely accession dates of the major Early and Late Classic rulers (Stuart 2005:148-149). More prominent and well deserved credit has gone to Linda Schele and Peter Mathews (1974), who summarized the rulers of Palenque’s Late Classic and gave them working names in Ch’ol Mayan (Stuart 2005:149). The present work is partly based on the transcript by Phil Wanyerka of a hieroglyphic workshop presented by Schele and Mathews at the 1993 Maya Meet- ings at Texas (Schele and Mathews 1993). Essential recourse has also been made to the insights and decipherments of David Stuart, who made his first Palenque Round Table presentation in 1978 at the age of twelve (Stuart 1979) and has recently advanced our understanding of Palenque and its rulers immeasurably (Stuart 2005). -

The caves are on the property of the Ch’ol Maya ejido of Joloniel. All three caves contain pre-Columbian pottery shards. An Early Classic Maya mural and seven groups of hieroglyphic texts are painted on the walls of Cave #1. These are the only Early Classic cave paintings ever found in the Maya region, and they refer to rituals performed in the cave between A.D. 300 and A.D. 435. The Ch’ol Maya of the region believe a god named Don Juan inhabits Jolja’ and each year at Cave #1 they perform a Day of the Cross ceremony in his honor. These are supposed to be syllabic signs carrying meaning to spell grammatical morphemes. I would like to argue from a phonological and grammatological perspective why I believe that morphosyllables cannot work as proposed. By comparing the spelling principles of preposed morphemes with suffixes, I expose a pattern that points to a simple syllabic use in these cases. There are indications that sound integrations at morpheme boundaries are realised by spelling alterations and that the recipient’s knowledge of the written language was required to mentally anticipate under- spelled phonemes. The study spans El Lacandón’s foundation in the Late Preclassic period (300 B.C. -A.D. 150), its abandonment as part of its assimilation into the Palenque polity at the beginning of the Classic period (ca. A.D. 150), and its re-foundation as a 2nd level community in the political hierarchy of the Palenque polity at the end of the Late Classic (A.D. 750-850). Economic analyses consider patterns of production and consumption. -

Tulane University Frans Blom: Tulane"s "Indiana Jones" May 31, 2011 12:00 PM Nick Marinello [email protected] The year was 1925 and the world was much larger, rugged and less known. Tulane archeologist Frans Blom, along with a small team, set out on the first of what would be many expeditions to the jungles and mountains of Mexico and Guatemala to study the ancient remains, customs and languages of what he considered “the most notable of the ancient population of America, the Maya Indians.” Serving as Middle American Research Institute director from 1926 to 1940, Frans Blom led several expeditions through the Maya regions of Mexico and Central America. In this photo, Blom is seen at his camp during an exploration of the Uxmal ruins in the Yucatan. Through his fieldwork, the indefatigable Blom, an early director of Tulane's Middle American Research Institute, would bring to campus a trove of historical objects and knowledge. The fact that MARI is one of the nation's leading centers for research on Middle America is in no small part due to the exploits of Blom, says Kathe Lawton, assistant director of MARI, who likens Blom to the fictional character Indiana Jones. “He was very much the dashing young man,” says Lawton. “He was gorgeous, and the women uptown loved him.” In her 30 years working at MARI, Lawton has become something of an expert on not only Blom, but also the institute's extensive collection that until very recently inhabited the “musty, dusty” upper floor of Dinwiddie Hall. If Lawton feels a certain kinship with Blom, it is perhaps due to a shared dream for proper housing for the institute's valuable collection. -

Publications by and about early explorers and scholars are listed in that section, even though they sometimes deal extensively with Puuc architecture. Based on a study of the residential architecture at Copán, the author attempts to demonstrate the usefulness of “architectural energetics” in understanding ancient civilizations. As the author writes: “By converting buildings into the energy and labor expended in their construction, a series of reconstructions concerning social power, labor organization, and economics can be generated.” Thus, the book includes 12 tables with titles such as “Operations, Tasks, and Costs per Task in Construction”, “Cumulative Energy Cost per Major Construction Episode”, and Hierarchic Social structure based on Residential Cost”. The few conclusions reached regarding the Maya at Copån do not seem to need the elaborate structure of the book. For example, the first conclusion states that “in addition to their greater symbolic value, improved 2 residential structures provided their occupants with an enhanced biopsychological quality of life, particularly in terms of health and comfort.
