  • Destination Region of Murcia
PRESS Destination Region of Murcia Region of Murcia The Region of Murcia is located in south-east Spain on what is known as the Mediterranean Arc. Set between two seas –the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor– as a region, it has succeeded in combining its extensive cultural heritage with innovation and avant-garde artistic tendencies. Its most important cities are Murcia, the capital, with more than 440,000 inhabitants, Cartagena with more than 214,000 and Lorca with more than 90,000. The Region of Murcia has a population of around one and a half million and covers an area of 11,300km2. Although it is not a very large region, it offers 252km of coast and an astonishing variety of different landscapes considering its size. Diverse and accessible, it only takes a few hours to travel the length and breadth of the region. Mountains, beaches and cities dot the landscape and visitors will find history at every turn. Another of the Region of Murcia’s main attractions is its particularly good weather, with average temperatures in excess of 19ºC and 315 days of sun a year. All these factors offer visitors the opportunity to choose between a wide range of alternatives when organising their stay in the Region of Murcia. It is a destination full of contrasts, where everything is close at hand and easily accessible. Although the driving force behind the Region of Murcia’s economy has traditionally been agriculture, the Regional Government has made a firm commitment to converting the tourist sector into one of the pillars of the region’s economy.

  • The Candela Family Know Their Way Around the Yecla DO and Its Native Grapes, Having Founded the Señorio De Barahonda Winery In
Carro The Candela family know their way around the Yecla DO and its native grapes, having founded the Señorio de Barahonda winery in 1925 (the oldest in the region) and handing down their artisan spirit through four generations. They live with the conviction that good wine is made in the vineyard, and their estate is farmed accordingly. Their 340 hectares (840 acres) are planted on sandy limestone soils and farmed organically, using no additional irrigation despite the extremely dry climate. Here, gnarly-looking Monastrell vines stand their ground against the scorching summer days and freezing winter nights, occasionally soothed by a westerly Mediterranean breeze. Carro Tinto is completely unoaked, making it unapologetically juicy, bright, and eager for a sunny day by the grill. It complements the power of Monastrell with smaller proportions of Syrah, Merlot, and Tempranillo, making a wine that is both rich and approachable. In a word, Carro is the best introduction one can taste from the extreme vineyards of Yecla. WHAT MAKES THIS WINE UNIQUE?: Limestone-rich soils and only estate-owned grapes. The amount of care and the quality of the grapes that go into Carro are unparalleled in the region and the same used for more exclusive Barahonda cuvées. 100% unoaked. Carro is made using a Rhone-like blend that balances the earthiness of Monastrell and makes it extremely approachable: a perfect bridge for new world wine lovers looking to dip their toe into Spanish wine. • Arquitectura Civil Renacentista En Jumilla: La Antigua Casa Del Concejo
ARQUITECTURA CIVIL RENACENTISTA EN JUMILLA: LA ANTIGUA CASA DEL CONCEJO FRANCISCO JAVIER DELICADO MARTÍNEZ Departamento de Historia del Arte. Universitat de Valencia Abstract: This study deals with a Renaissance building's architecture from about the middle of the seventeenth century. It was constructed by the architect Julián de Alamíquez and enclaved in Jumilla, in the north-east of Murcia. Originally, this build- ing was destinated to be a town hall, having later different uses. It's an interesting example of civil architecture, with a pure classicism, that offers a common typology for its time in public buildings (town halls, communal granaries...), frequent in towns that belonged to the Villena's Marquisate (Cehegín, Yecla, Letur, Chinchilla de Montearagón), with an open porch in the lower ground and an unbroken "logia" in the upper one, characterized for the torsed columns that are used as support.

Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier. This thesis-guide was compiled through the research of the various Denominaciones de Origen of Spain, the history of Spain, the regions of Spain and their individual histories and cultures, and, of course, the many, many wines of Spain.
