No matter how many times I visit Albi, that is my reaction to the 285ft (79m) tower and massive walls of Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile. The largest brick structure in the world when it was built in the 13th century, its militaristic architecture demonstrated to the defeated supporters of the heretical Cathar movement that the Catholic Church was back in charge. Next door, the equally formidable Palais de la Berbie reinforced that statement. Today, the bishop’s palace houses the revamped Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, the world’s largest collection of works by the locally born artist – and proves that his social observation extended far beyond the Parisian demi-monde. Add works by Matisse, Dufy, Gauguin and more, and this is a museum where we could spend all day. The Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile The cathedral and palace are both built of handmade brick – as is virtually everything else in Albi, giving rise to the nickname of la ville rouge. Looking closely, we spot 500-year-old thumbprints here and there in the baked clay. The maze of traffic-free streets in the medieval old town has more reminders of the past. Half-timbered homes are topped with a soulheilou, a covered roof terrace-cum-storehouse that is perfect for drying ham as well as laundry. Street signs are in two languages: modern French and ancient Occitan. Traditions also continue with food and wine. In Les Délices Lamarque (11 rue Sainte-Cécile), I am offered a hard biscuit. “We call them janots; we dip them in Gaillac, our local wine.” Even the grape varieties link to the past, with Occitan names: the white Len de l’El and red Fer Servadou.

De fait il y eut un chêne multicentenaire qui abattu en 1857 fournit à la charpente de ce qui, avant d'être au haut de la côte un café, fut un fenil. Mais Monjas est le féminin de Mongés « moines » ; tout simplement le chêne appartenait aux reli- gieuses de l'Annonciade, qui à Albi avaient leur monastère au Prieuré de Fargues en face de la Berbie. C'est « le chêne des religieuses ». Et pourtant la traduction mensongère, dérisoire et si espièglement roturière conviendrait tellement bien à une commune qui n'eut jamais de cabaret, qui a à peine une église, dont l'école et la mairie sont comme au hasard, ici où là, qu'importe ! Rien qui ait un corps d'où on induirait à une âme. Pour une commune avoir cent ans, c'est être née d'une scène de ménage et n'avoir point de passé. Et si le Garric tire quelque lustre de noms connus, il les emprunte aux voisins : aux seigneurs de Les- cure, aux Solages de Carmaux. Le renom de la seigneurie indigène de la Guimarié a-t-il dépassé les proches limites où portent les seuls échos des cloches de Sainte-Martiane ? Pas un général, pas un savant, pas un littérateur, pas même un homme politique d'intérêt local, dont pour le moins on se souviendrait qu'ils furent ! Le Garric n'existe que traversé.
