Crania Japonica: Ethnographic Portraiture, Scientific Discourse, and the Fashioning of Ainu/Japanese Colonial Identities by Jeff Braytenbah A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Thesis Committee: Kenneth J. Ruoff, Chair Laura Robson Jennifer Tappan Portland State University 2019 © 2019 Jeff Braytenbah Abstract Japan’s colonial activities on the island of Hokkaido were instrumental to the creation of modern Japanese national identity. Within this construction, the indigenous Ainu people came to be seen in dialectical opposition to the 'modern' and 'civilized' identity that Japanese colonial actors fashioned for themselves. This process was articulated through travel literature, ethnographic portraiture, and discourse in scientific racism which racialized perceived divisions between the Ainu and Japanese and contributed to the unmaking of the Ainu homeland: Ainu Mosir. -
Muehlebach Field Dedication July 3, 1923
[page 1] Muehlebach Field Dedication July 3, 1923 Compliments KANSAS CITY BASEBALL CLUB AMERICAN ASSOCIATION [page 2] Proclamation HEY, red-blooded Americans, Fans, EVERYBODY! A new park, Muehlebach Field, dedicated to the great American sport, Baseball, will open Tuesday, July third, Brooklyn Avenue at 22nd. This event will be of interest to all who enjoy clean, healthful, outdoor recreation. The day has gone by when business men look upon a holiday as a lost opportunity. It is now considered an INVESTMENT, as employer and employe alike return, not only with renewed ambition, but with new thoughts and new ideas for which Old Man Success is always on the lookout. For this reason, I recommend that every employer forget the ever present serious side of life and attend the opening baseball game at Muehlebach Field. I also recommend that every employer as far as possible give the same privilege to his employes. To set the example for this recommendation, and to demonstrate its practicality, I declare Tuesday afternoon, July third, a half holiday for all City Hall Employes, beginning at Twelve o’clock (noon). When did the rascals of “The Front Page” turn into the scoundrels of “Absence of Malice”? Why did reporters stop being heroes played by Clark Gable, Bette Davis and Cary Grant and become bit actors playing rogues dogging at the heels of Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn? It all happened in the dark as people watched movies and sat at home listening to radio and watching television. “The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture” explores the continuing, evolving relationship between the American people and their media. It investigates the conflicting images of reporters in movies and television and demonstrates, decade by decade, their impact on the American public’s perception of newsgatherers in the 20th century. The class shows how it happened first on the big screen, then on the small screens in homes across the country. The class investigates the image of the cinematic newsgatherer from silent films to the 1990s, from Hildy Johnson of “The Front Page” and Charles Foster Kane of “Citizen Kane” to Jane Craig in “Broadcast News.” The reporter as the perfect movie hero. -

Carl Crim: 1958 Oklahoma Driver of the Year and 1959 National Driver of the Year
Carl Crim: 1958 Oklahoma Driver of the Year and 1959 National Driver of the Year Carl Crim was born on March 11, 1915 in Doniphan, Missouri. When he was just a young boy, his family moved from Missouri to Okmulgee, Oklahoma. While working on the family farm as a teenager, Crim aspired to become a truck driver when he watched trucks go by as he plowed the fields near the highway. After operating a hay carrier during the harvest seasons, Crim graduated from Okmulgee High School and his career ambition began to take shape when he took his first professional driving job in 1933 in Okmulgee. Throughout the next ten years, Crim would work at a variety of trucking firms. He drove for: • John Lewis Truck Company (2 years), • Petroleum Transport (4 years), • Hopkins Truck Co. of Ponca City (3 Years) and • Mid-Continent Petroleum of Okmulgee (1 Carl Crim aspired to be a truck driver from the time he was a young teenager year) And while he always earned high marks and yearly awards for safe driving, Crim soon developed a reputation for often being the first to arrive at scenes of accidents, administering first aid, and sometimes performing heroic acts. In 1938, Crim was filling a 1,000-gallon underground gasoline storage tank from his truck at the MK&O bus terminal in downtown Tulsa. At one step in the process, he had to remove the cap from the underground tank to gauge capacity. With the cap off, fumes from the tank crept across the concrete floor to the opposite wall. -
