Financial Aid and Special Scholarship Opportunities at Chadwick

Chadwick School currently awards more than $4.2 million annually in financial aid to approximately 18 percent of its 870 in Grades K-12. The MacFarlane and Malone Scholarships are among a number of substantial opportunities for need-based financial assistance available to Chadwick students.

The MacFarlane Leadership Scholarship

The MacFarlane Leadership Scholarship is a need-based scholarship, awarded to incoming ninth graders who demonstrate high academic achievement, leadership or leadership potential and/or have shown outstanding character. This scholarship is reserved for students with demonstrated financial need to meet the cost of attendance, and whose potential may be supported by Chadwick’s academic, social and leadership opportunities. Uniquely, this will include both U.S. and study abroad program opportunity, with costs covered by the MacFarlane Leadership Scholarship.

Ruth and Roger MacFarlane, who are the parents of Chadwick alumni Taryn ’94, Alex ’95, Katherine ’05, and Jessica ’07, established the MacFarlane Leadership Scholarship Fund in 2007 to fund the Scholarship in perpetuity. Ruth MacFarlane is a longtime member of the Roessler-Chadwick Foundation Board of Trustees, and Ruth and Roger co-chaired Chadwick’s Annual Fund in 1996 and 1997. Motivated by the MacFarlanes, an important additional gift of $1.25 million from the Tambour Foundation in March 2014 doubled the number of MacFarlane Leadership attending Chadwick’s Upper School. The Tambour Foundation’s generous continued investment in the MacFarlane Leadership Scholarship Fund, with three additional grants totaling $2.55 million in May 2018, will increase the number of Scholars to twelve by the 2022-23 academic year. This is an exciting opportunity both for our candidates and for Chadwick School. The first MacFarlane Leadership Scholars already graduated from Chadwick, and currently thriving at their respective colleges. Chadwick believes leadership takes many forms: elected or appointed leadership positions, and also ethical leadership, and informal leadership, such as showing initiative in teaching a group project or volunteer activity, or the ability to set an example, or involve or motivate others. Qualifications and Procedure to Apply

The admission committee will nominate from the applicant pool those students whose experiences and abilities suggest the greatest possibility for matching the intent of the scholarship. Students will indicate their interest in the MacFarlane Scholarship on the Chadwick application form and will submit their application for financial aid. The admission committee may choose to notify the students who are nominated for that special consideration to be asked for additional information, if needed. The Malone Scholarship

Through a generous gift from the Malone Family Foundation in 2003, Chadwick School is pleased to offer the opportunity to apply for a Malone Scholarship. This scholarship is available to excellent students with demonstrated financial need who are applying to Chadwick for Grades 7-12. The goal of the Malone Scholarship is to provide an outstanding to students who demonstrate exceptional intellectual ability and achievement. Students who are considered for this opportunity will have exhibited a keen desire to learn and enthusiasm for maximizing their educational opportunities, yet lack the resources to finance a Chadwick education. The amount of the scholarship will depend on the need documented by the scholar’s family.

From 2000 through 2012, nearly 49 independent secondary throughout the United States were selected for endowment by the Malone Family Foundation to provide scholarships to highly capable students. These partner schools were selected on the basis of their academic caliber; the quality of their staff; excellent accommodations for gifted and talented students; strong AP / IB and enrichment programs; attention to the individual 's needs, interests and talents; financial strength and stability; a commitment to financial aid; and an economically, culturally, ethnically, and socially diverse population. Through these endowments, Malone schools are empowered to perpetually fund scholarships for motivated top students in grades 7 through 12 ("Malone Scholars") based on merit and financial need; and hundreds of talented Malone Scholars are educated each year by the foundation’s nationwide network of excellent schools. In 2013, the 50th and final Malone Scholars School, The Stanford Online High School, was selected to provide Malone scholarships.
