    Blog Post: What is the Head of School’s Responsibility for Teacher Development? By Rabbi Marc Baker, Head of School at Gann Academy in Waltham, MA February 18, 2011 At the recent North American Jewish Day School Conference, I had the privilege of co- presenting one of the sessions with Sharon Feiman-Nemser and Vivian Troen, two colleagues from the Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education at Brandeis University. Our session addressed new teacher induction, or the various ways that a school supports and develops its new teachers. Gann has invested significant resources over the past several years in this induction process, and one of the things I have learned is that, when done well, induction does much more than support new teachers; it actually can transform teaching and learning in the entire school. My part of the presentation focused on the role of the Head of School in the induction of new teachers and, during a case study that we presented, I was surprised and a bit disturbed by a debate that surfaced about the Head’s responsibility to new teachers. One of the participants in the session suggested that new teachers either “have it or they don’t” and that it is really their job to seek out the help they need. This belief underlies an approach to new teacher induction that is limited to “orientation,” helping teachers adjust to a new school in cultural and technical ways. Instead, my co-presenters and I suggested that we need a completely different understanding of teachers and teaching. New teachers, like new doctors or new athletes, are just beginning to learn a complex craft.

Our graduates have gained the experiences and knowledge that their careers and future engagements will demand of them. Ours is a campus where students learn by doing, and our graduates have already proven themselves — winning prestigious case competitions and grants, publishing papers that have gained acclaim from scientists and scholars, and bettering their communities through hands-on internships and practicums. Outside the classroom, they have embraced their responsibilities as active members of the community. They’ve raised funds to combat deadly disease, provided food for the hungry, taught younger students in local schools and traveled across the globe to work with and learn from their international peers.

    e are privileged to continue serving the Jewish community by providing an easy and efficient vehicle to streamline charitable giving and facilitate philanthropy. This has been another record-breaking year for the Jewish Communal Fund (JCF). WA leader in the world of Jewish philanthropy, JCF continues to be the largest and most active Jewish donor advised fund in the country, managing $1.2 billion in charitable assets. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013 our diverse donor base granted more than $270 million to thousands of not-for-profits in all sectors. In addition to these generous grants recommended by our donors, JCF makes a community gift of $2 million to the UJA-Federation of New York’s Annual Campaign. JCF’s institutional endowment, our Special Gifts Fund, awarded an additional $767,000 in grants to projects and agencies in the New York Jewish community. Among those grants was one for $240,000 to provide day camp scholarships to families impacted by Hurricane Sandy that enabled 276 children to attend day camp. This is the power and impact of our JCF community! The Jewish Communal Fund is dedicated to providing our donors and their families with outstanding personal service and the philanthropic community has taken notice.
