    HOPA HEMSINLIS: HISTORY, LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY This thesis is submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Cultural Studies by Neşe Kaya Sabancı University August 2014 © Neşe Kaya 2014 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT HOPA HEMSINLIS: HISTORY, LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY Neşe Kaya Cultural Studies, MA, 2014 Thesis Advisor: Leyla Neyzi This thesis aims at studying with the Homşetsnak/Hemşince speaking Hopa Hemşinlis with a focus on their history, language, culture, and ethnic identity with the use of ethnographic data and oral history interviews. My analysis focuses on how Hopa Hemşinlis construct their past at the present, as well as the already existing studies on Hemşin history within a discussion of history writing in general. This study also describes the history of Hemşince focusing on the language ideologies held by Hopa Hemşinlis in addition to the processes having impact on the use of Hemşince. In this study, it is depicted that Hemşin history and language are resorted as sites for ethnic identity negotiations and discussions by researchers as well as Hopa Hemşinlis. Although there have been endeavors to attain Turkish and Armenian origins to Hopa Hemşinlis, which still continue today, Hopa Hemşinlis exhibit a strong sense of Hemşinli identity. When the relevant literature is reviewed, it is seen that research has been conducted on idioms and proverbs found in textbooks used to teach Turkish to foreigners. In general, texts have been used for teaching idioms and proverbs. The use of songs in teaching idioms and proverbs seems to be of great importance for students to repeat, hear and recall them. The current study aims to investigate whether the songs of the Turkish Pop Star, Tarkan can be used as a tool to teach Turkish idioms and proverbs. In this study, the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, has been used. A total of 81 songs from Tarkan’s 8 albums were listened, transcribed and investigated. The idioms and proverbs found in these songs were checked from the “Idioms and Proverbs Dictionary” of Turkish Language Society twice by two researchers to establish the reliability and validity of the analysis. A total of 406 idioms were found within the 8 albums of Tarkan. The album in which the highest number of idioms was encountered is “Metamorfoz.” In this album, a total of 111 idioms has been used.

When we avoid reducing design to merely physical mediums and place emphasis also on its intellectual context, its abstract predicates—ranging from method to model, from imagination to the “artwork”—it would not be misguided to assert that music has been subject to a process which has gained momentum especially with the Republic, while its most primal moves can only be deciphered in the Tanzimat reform era, and that its reflections—products—have gained visibility again along the axis of this process.
