Müller, 1818 and Claviger testaceus Preyssler, 1790. Both species are rare in Poland. Beetles of the genus Claviger are specialized myrmecophiles and are dependent on their host ants throughout the whole life cycle. During the field research, which were conducted in the Low Beskid Mts. (South-Eastern Poland), new sites of both species were found. C. longicornis was recorded in a colony of Lasius sabularum (Bondroit, 1918) and this is the first record of this ant as its host . -

Based Alpha-Taxonomy of Eusocial Organisms
Myrmecological News 19 1-15 Vienna, January 2014 Application of Exploratory Data Analyses opens a new perspective in morphology- based alpha-taxonomy of eusocial organisms Bernhard SEIFERT, Markus RITZ & Sándor CSŐSZ Abstract This article introduces a new application of the Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) algorithms Ward's method, Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA), K-Means clustering, and a combination of Non-Metric Multidimen- sional Scaling and K-Means clustering (NMDS-K-Means) for hypothesis formation in morphology-based alpha-taxonomy of ants. The script is written in R and freely available at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/agnesclustering/. The characte- ristic feature of the new approach is an unconventional application of linear discriminant analysis (LDA): No species hypothesis is imposed. Instead each nest sample, composed of individual ant workers, is treated as a separate class. This creates a multidimensional distance matrix between group centroids of nest samples as input data for the clustering methods. We mark the new method with the prefix "NC" (Nest Centroid). The performance of NC-Ward, NC-UPGMA, NC-K-Means clustering, and a combination of Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling and K-Means clustering (NC- NMDS-K-Means) was comparatively tested in 48 examples with multiple morphological character sets of 74 cryptic species of 13 ant genera. Data sets were selected specifically on the criteria that the EDA methods are likely to lead to errors – i.e., for the condition that any character under consideration overlapped interspecifically in bivariate plots against body size. Morphospecies hypotheses were formed through interaction between EDA and a confirmative linear discri- minant analysis (LDA) in which samples with disagreements between the primary species hypotheses and EDA classifica- tion were set as wild-cards. -

Lasius (Austrolasius) carniolicus MAYR, 1861 was collected in south-west Poland, Dolny Śląsk (Lower Silesia) region, Ślężański Park Krajobrazowy, Chwałków. The ants were caught in the sandy spoil heap located around a flooded quarry. It is the first record of this subgenus and species from Poland, bringing the total count of native ant species to 98. InTroDUCTIon Lasius (Austrolasius) carniolicus MAYR, 1861 is a temporary social parasite of Lasius (Cautolasius) flavus (FABRICIUS, 1782), Lasius (s. str.) piliferus SEIFERT, 1992 and probably also other species of Lasius alienus group (BUSCHINGER & SEIFERT 1997, SEIFERT 2007). Together with Lasius reginae FABER, 1967 it forms the subgenus Aus- trolasius FABER, 1967. Although these ants are superficially similar to other Lasius parasites in the subgenus Chthonolasius, the most recent phylogeny data shows that they are most closely related to the nearctic subgenus Acanthomyops (MARUYAMA & al. 2008). Austrolasius species have characteristically small gynes, not or only slightly larger than workers, and physogastric queens (FABER 1967). A total of 111 valid names of outdoor species are listed based on data from museum and private collections. Over the past decade several faunistic and taxonomic changes concerning the Czech ant fauna have occurred. The species Formica clara Forel, 1886, Lasius carniolicus Mayr, 1861, Temnothorax jailensis (Arnol’di, 1977) and Tetramorium hungaricum Röszler, 1935 were recorded on the Czech territory for the first time. Further, the presence of Camponotus atricolor (Nylander, 1849) and Lasius myops Forel, 1894, formerly regarded as uncertain, was confirmed. Moreover, the status of Tetramorium staerckei Kratochvíl, 1944 was reviewed as a species. Besides outdoor species, a list of five indoor (introduced) species is given. The impact and spread of the invasive garden ant: an alien invasive species in the UK Phillip Buckham-Bonnett PhD Thesis University of York Biology December 2019 Abstract Alongside climate change and habitat loss, invasive non-native species are a major threat to the natural world. Ants are amongst the most widespread and damaging invasive species. The invasive garden ant, Lasius neglectus, has only recently been detected in the United Kingdom and is the country’s first invasive ant species. This thesis aims to assess the impact and spread of this species in the UK. In this thesis I carry out a UK-wide risk assessment for the species and develop a protocol for experimentally assessing its potential impact on an economically important crop plant. I investigate behaviours that may contribute to its success as an invasive species. I evaluate the feasibility of commonly used pesticides for the control of Lasius neglectus, and conclude that granular products, while convenient for large- scale application, are not suitable for this species due to low palatability; this may hinder future control attempts. I carry out a large-scale survey to assess the distribution of this easily-overlooked species, and conclude that while it is not as widely distributed in botanic gardens as expected, the number of urban sites where it occurs is increasing rapidly. The site ofL. sabularum is the second record of this species in Poland. KEY WORDS: ants, faunistics, Eastern Beskidy Mountains, new records. INTRODUCTION There are 103 species of ants recorded in Poland, 97 occurring outdoors and 6 occurring indoors (CZECHOWSKI et al. 2012). The state of knowledge of ant fauna of Poland is heterogeneous, and among the zoogeographical regions of Poland, Eastern Beskidy Mountains are one of the least studied. In the Eastern Beskidy Mountains there are only 34 ant species recorded, all of them occurring outdoors.
