2 AMAZON WOMAN IN CULTURAL NARRATIVES: A MOTION COMICS PRACTICE Supervisor: Prof, N. Şule ATILGAN Author: Aylin GÜNGÖR ABSTRACT Comics appealing to children and adults are created with male- dominated predominantly superheroes with infinite powers in an imaginary world. However, the rareness of female characters created in comics or creating them with objectification causes these female characters to become a product of popular culture. When the examples in the world are searched, it can be seen that there are aesthetically sexy and beautiful girls and women as super heroes and there is no comic practice created with characters embracing warrior and strong woman image in Turkey. For this reason, the scope of the thesis is restricted with “Amazon Women” based upon the female characters in Turkish culture. Besides, the thesis study in the context of “Fourth-Wave Feminism” occurring in today’s new feminist movements requires a sociological research due to the fact that a modern approach is addressed instead of a conventional insight in both the illustrations drawn and the scenario of the comic in the process of this practice. Consequently, a motion comic application with reference to cultural narrative myths based upon Amazon women encompassing strong female leaders is created in this study as opposed to the ones with primarily male characters and the ones keeping the female characters in the background. Therefore, this comic application is such as to support the creation of a motion comic composed of female characters with regard to the theoretical information. Keywords: Amazon women, cultural narrative, comics, fourth wave feminism, motion comics, mobile application. 3 TEŞEKKÜR Hacettepe Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Enstitüsü Grafik Anasanat Dalında yürüttüğüm Sanatta Yeterlik sürecinin tüm aşamalarında yanımda olan ve bana destek veren danışmanım Prof. N. If it were not for your sacrifices, we would not have the lives and opportunities we have now. Having your constant love and support means the world to me. You are both my North Stars for everything I do. I would also like to acknowledge my sister for convincing Mom and Dad to let you name me after two of your greatest childhood role models, superheroines, and cultural icons. The Pink Power Ranger and The Queen of Tejano music are both pretty huge namesakes to live up to. I hope I do their legacies justice and that I am making you proud. I know I do not say this to you often but know that, through all our ups and downs, you were my hero growing up.

There are several quite long series from this source, retaining the alphabetical order in which they were arranged, Nos. 215-312, 403-423, 541- 562. It is correspondingly poor in poems from Meleager s Stephanus (Nos. 313-338). It contains a good deal of the Alexandrian Palladas, a contemporary of Hypatia, most of wliich we could well dispense with. The latter part, from No. 582 07iwards, consists mostly of real or pretended in- scriptions on works of art or buildings, many quite unworthy of preservation, but some, especially those on baths, quite graceful. The last three epigrams, written in a later hand, do not belong to the original Anthology. • The Other Greeks: Metaphors and Ironies of Hellenism in Livy’S Fourth Decade
THE OTHER GREEKS: METAPHORS AND IRONIES OF HELLENISM IN LIVY’S FOURTH DECADE DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Douglas S. Freeble * * * * The Ohio State University 2004 Dissertation Committee: Professor Erik Gunderson, Adviser Approved by Professor Kirk Freudenburg, Co-Adviser ___________________________ Professor Sarah Iles Johnston Adviser Greek and Latin Graduate Program Copyright by Douglas Freeble 2004 ABSTRACT Already in the Praefatio of Livy’s work the metaphor of the importation of foreign influence is apparent. Livy chooses the annalistic narrative style as the most Roman form possible and a self -construction as an author who valorizes traditional Roman values. These authorial decisions on the modality of the narrative are intimately linked to tropology and the manufacturing of the metaphors and ironies that frame Livy’s text in books 31-45. Roman control in Thessaly is asserted by manufacturing communities in its image. These collapse miserably when the guiding Roman metaphors are questioned. The failure of Roman institutions is depicted as evidence of the restless nature of the Thessalians. A representative image of Thessaly is given in the character of Theoxena, a Thessalian exile who kills herself at a festival of Aeneas. Her story allows Romans to form an emotional bond with the Thessalians, although it maintains their essential alterity. The Galatian campaign of Manlius Vulso shows the dangers of Rome’s encounter with Hellenism. The Galatians are presented as Gallic-Greek hybrids who are no longer the great Gallic warriors of the past.

Hage Theme: Shaping the organisational ethos: change, innovation and transformation ‘Melanchthon just may be an important root that twenty-first century educators can build upon’ (Sorenson 2010, p.11). 1. Passport Philipp Melanchthon, original name Philipp Schwartzerd, (born February 15, 1497, Bretten, Palatinate [Germany] — died April 19, 1560, probably Wittenberg, Saxony). 2. Narrative element In the spring of 1518 Johannes Reuchlin was sitting in his quiet house full of valuable books in Stuttgart, a city in southern Germany, anxiously waiting for a messenger from the city of Wittenberg, the residence of the Elector of Saxony, about four hundred kilometres to the north as the crow flies. Next to Erasmus Reuchlin was one of the most prominent emerging leaders of the humanist movement. He was recognised as an authority on Greek and Hebrew, being also an author of a pioneering Hebrew grammar. The reason for his tension was the question whether his second cousin, Philip Schwarzerd, whom he had nominated as professor in Greek would actually be appointed at the recently founded university of Wittenberg. Philipp was still young, just twenty, but exceptionally gifted. In the difficult years after his father’s death in 1508 Johannes had taken care of him and stimulated his intellectual formation. When he attended the Latin school and began developing into an accomplished humanist, he not only made him a gift of a Greek grammar, but also supplied him with a Greek scholarly name: Melanchthon (black earth). After his Bachelor’s degree at the university of Heidelberg, he obtained his Master’s in 1514 as a boy of seventeen at the top of his class at the university of Tübingen after which almost as a matter-of-course there followed an appointment as lecturer.

Signed……………………………………………….. (Rosemary Anne Sillars) Date…………………………………….. Abstract The novels, poems and journalism of Ina Seidel and Vicki Baum were part of that everyday popular literature read and enjoyed by an international audience throughout the years of the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and beyond. Their wide distribution and popular themes ensured that they reached a diverse public, but their publishers aimed their attentions at that female readership whose buying-power and literary tastes were now acknowledged as a significant market-factor. Both authors recognised their powerful position and took upon themselves the responsibilities, with which they believed they were thus endowed, to enlighten, educate and inform. They wrote from a view of themselves as creative artists with particular literary skills but, above all, as women.
