Introduction Historically the Chilean economy has been based in exports accounting for 35% of the gross domestic product and mining is the main export income in the country. However, since 1980s as a part of a promotion the Chilean economy has diversified in part away from its dangerous over-reliance on copper exports. The growth of earnings in the fruit, wine, wood and forestry, fisheries and aquaculture sectors in particular, has been rapid since the early 1980s as Chile has exploited its comparative advantage in environmental endowment and low labour costs on the global market (Barton, 1997; Barton & Murray, 2009). The salmonid cultivation is restricted to regions with particular water temperature ranges in both fresh and seawater environments, sheltered waters and critically excellent water quality. Thus, salmonid aquaculture has become an important activity and the main development gear in the southern regions of Chile. The Chilean salmon industry has shown a fast development over the last 20 years and, therefore; today, Chile is the largest producer of farmed rainbow trout and Coho salmon, and the second worldwide of Atlantic salmon. This situation is the result from the application of innovation and development of value added products, which produced an average annual growth rate of 22% from 1990 to 2007 and an increase of exports from USD 159 million in 1991 to USD 2,242 million in 2007 (SalmonChile, 2007a). -

Unfortunately, marine zooplankton biodiversity is not well known because of difficult morphological identifications and lack of taxonomic experts for many groups. In addition, the large taxonomic diversity present in plankton and low sampling coverage pose challenges in obtaining a better understanding of true zooplankton diversity. Molecular identification tools, like DNA barcoding, have been successfully used to identify marine planktonic specimens to a species. However, the behaviour of methods for specimen identification and species delimitation remain untested for taxonomically diverse and widely-distributed marine zooplanktonic groups. Using Canadian marine planktonic crustacean collections, I generated a multi-gene data set including COI-5P and 18S-V4 molecular markers of morphologically-identified Copepoda and Thecostraca (Multicrustacea: Hexanauplia) species. I used this data set to assess generalities in the genetic divergence patterns and to determine if a barcode gap exists separating interspecific and intraspecific molecular divergences, which can reliably delimit specimens into species. I then used this information to evaluate the North Pacific, Arctic, and North Atlantic biogeography of marine Calanoida (Hexanauplia: Copepoda) plankton. -

Environmental Engineer for Oceana Collaborator Alejandro Buschmann R. www.oceana.org SALMON FARMING CAMPAIGN In the past few years Oceana South America and Antarctica, located in Santiago, Chile, has made continuous efforts on a national and international scale to denounce the salmon farming industrys’ lack of sustainability in the south of Chile. Nevertheless, there remain segments within Chile’s government that have yet to assume their political responsibility in this issue, underestimating the scientific evidence that corroborates the real impact salmon farming activities have on our ecosystem. Our salmon farming campaign is aiming at demanding the moratorium of the salmon industry’s expansion for a period of 10 years, which would allow for scientific research as well as for the Chilean authorities to obtain enough resources to effectively regulate the salmon industry. The research would be based on environmental, sanitary, social and institutional arguments. Chilean Blue Revolution: the Rise of Salmon Aquaculture and the State By Jose Augusto Martini Costa MA Thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Political Science Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2019 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador Abstract In less than two decades, Chile moved from a nonexistent salmon aquaculture production to become a world leader. This research examines the role of state institutions in fostering a non-traditional export-led industry in Chile from 1969 to 2016. During this period, Chile experienced a forced transition towards a neoliberal economic model imposed by General Pinochet’s brutal dictatorship and maintained by subsequent democratic governments. The institutional framework set during the dictatorship of the 1970s and 1980s shaped actors and processes related to salmon aquaculture and continue to structure the industry. The history of salmon aquaculture development in Chile is marked by a paradox in which the Chilean state, the same that advocates for a neoliberal economy with a minimum state presence, continues to support, promote, finance and define the salmon aquaculture industry direct and indirectly. ii Acknowledgements There are a lot of different feelings after concluding a yearlong project like this one, including relief, happiness, and accomplishment. ISSN 2070-7010 529 FAO FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE TECHNICAL PAPER 529 Integrated mariculture A global review Integrated mariculture – A global review global A – mariculture Integrated This technical paper provides a comprehensive review of current integrated mariculture practices around the world in three papers covering temperate zones, tropical zones and one semi enclosed ecosystem, the Mediterranean Sea. Integrated mariculture includes a diverse range of co-culture/farming practices, from integrated multitrophic aquaculture to the more specialized integration of mangrove planting with aquaculture, called aquasilviculture. Modern integrated mariculture systems must be developed in order to assist sustainable expansion of the sector in coastal and marine ecosystems thus responding to the global increase for seafood demand but with a new paradigm of more efficient food production systems. Successful integrated mariculture operations must consider all relevant stakeholders into its development plan, there is also a need to facilitate commercialization and promote effective legislation for the support and inclusion of integrated mariculture through adequate incentives particularly considering the reduction of environmental costs associated to monoculture farming. Bioremediation of fed aquaculture impacts through integrated mariculture is a core benefit but the increase of production, more diverse and secure business and larger profits should not be underestimated as additional advantages.
