Although the Rebel Alliance has won a few battles against the Empire, hope is fading. The Empire is about to finish building the greatest weapon the galaxy has ever seen - the Death Star. The rebels' only chance to defeat it now lies in the unlikely hands of a princess, a scoundrel, and a farm boy Since the premier of the original film, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker have become iconic, larger-than-life characters. The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy takes a deeper look at these three heroes as they join forces to defeat the evil that threatens their entire galaxy. Although the new perspective's engaging, it lacks elements necessary to the original tale. Bit disappointed Taking the grace out of the main and the Farm Boy character Princess Leiatrying to turn her into a "young girls anthem" for a strong character, continually overshadowed and muted the entire story. A story which is now decades old. By doing this, the simplistic story about friendship, courage, fear, overcoming fear, and sacrifice, was now reduced to internal the Scoundrel. For example, when the Princess planned to escape the Death Star single handedly. This continual theme forced the listener to never really connect with the characters. The emotional struggle was never present, which made the character development two dimensional the Scoundrel never really moved anywhere. I assumed this retelling was going to provide more detail and fill some of the gaps of the original. Instead, I got a reordered, abridged version. I didn't care for it at all. Star Wars: A New Hope the Princess did you like least? How would you have and the Farm Boy the story to make it more enjoyable? Leia's characterization was disappointing. What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike? The performers did a good job. The best parts were the Scoundrel there was interaction between characters. What did you like best about this story? The new focus. The story follows, as the title says, the Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy. The story of Luke on the farm, and Ben Kenobi is glossed a bit over, Star Wars: A New Hope the Princess told in memories of the character and similar. The fight between Ben and Vader is seen trough Luke's eyes, and so a bit different. But all in all, the story keeps it's core and the small bits the author chose to add from her fantasy are great additions that feel natural, and even sometimes add to your appreciation and understanding of the characters. How does this one compare? Marc Thompson is the best Star Wars narrator out there. There is no comparing. He could have done the female voices as well, but Rebecca Soler delivers a great performance as well! Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Jan 07, April Aprilius Maximus rated it liked it Shelves: And the Farm Boy book you've seen the movie, but haven't read the book I know this is kinda cheating but there was literally nothing else to choose! Dec 31, Emma rated it it was ok. I think this is the first time I've ever given a book less than three stars. That might be harsh, but I had so many issues with this book. I don't think it's fair to give it three stars only because it is a Star Wars story. My main issue is that this is a middle grade book written down to the readers. Alexandra Bracken dumbed down her writing for the audience, but Star Wars: A New Hope the Princess only made the characters seem immature. Leia became the stereot I think this is the first time I've ever given and the Farm Boy book less than three stars. Leia became the stereotypical 'I want to be strong and prove everyone wrong' character. Her POV was my least favorite because of the huge missed opportunity. She came across as not intelligent and as a child who held this grudge against everyone who judged her wrongly. If she had been truly strong, she could have stood firm knowing who she is without having to live for everyone else. Once the POV changed and we saw her through the other characters' eyes, I started to like the author's portrayal of her more. Thus the book improved a bit as it went. Han Solo and Luke's portrayals were not much better. Their dialogue was so young. That's what it is. They spoke in a way that made them seem the age of the target audience. That made it very difficult to read. I can't imagine enjoying this even if I was still ten years old. I still love The Scoundrel Bracken's other books View all 3 comments. Jan 24, Theresa rated it it was amazing. I loved this book!!! It was such a great read, especially if you've seen the movie it just adds so much to the story. Alex is one of my favorite authors, and she literally nails it every time. I've never read one of her books yet and disliked it. Loved this! I also teared up a little at the end! Dec 28, Jaclyn rated it it was amazing. If you love Star Wars, you've gotta pick this one up! Loved this adaptation of And the Farm Boy New Hope! Bought this yesterday--must read undoubtedly, written Star Wars: A New Hope the Princess one of my favourite authors and also a tie in of one of my favourite movie series ever! SO most definitely yes! Though I did not the simple style of writing, which I think seems to be aimed at a young audience, but nonetheless I will read it because I love the moviessss! Love this novelization a lot! This was my first novelisation of the Star Wars series. I've read others from the expanded universe I do remember reading some apprentice novels about Anakin years back. But this was my first novelisation. And by Alexandra Bracken! How can I not love it???? This book is told in three parts. We begin with Leia's perspective, and rather than just the stuff that we see in the film, Alexandra Bracken adds a little bit more giving us some insight into Leia's experiences before she is rescued by Luke and Han. I love that she does this because we get a greater insight to how Leia feels about herself and during that time of the movie. The same can be said for each of the other characters too, we get snippets that were considered behind the scenes in the movie. Like how Luke is accepted as a pilot, and how he meets Wedge. And also how he felt when he lost his friend--Biggs. So yes, I loved this book, and I loved seeing my favourite characters in my favourite sci-fi series written like this. And even more so when one of my favourite authors ever is the author, adding her own special flavour to the first story of the series original. View all 4 comments. Nov 07, Grace rated it liked it.
