Han Solo and Chewbacca the Wookiee team up for an all-new adventure in this thrilling upper middle grade novel. Hidden in the story are also hints the Scoundrel clues about the upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakensmaking this a must-listen for fans old and new! By: Greg Rucka. Although the Rebel Alliance has won a few battles against the Empire, hope is fading. The Empire is about to finish building the greatest weapon the galaxy has ever seen - the Death Star. The rebels' only chance to defeat it now lies in the unlikely hands of a princess, a scoundrel, and a farm boy Since the premier of the original film, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker have become iconic, larger-than-life characters. The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy takes a deeper look at these three heroes as they join forces to defeat the evil that threatens their entire galaxy. Although the new perspective's engaging, it lacks elements necessary to the original tale. Bit disappointed Taking the grace out of the main and the Farm Boy character Princess Leiatrying to turn her into a "young girls anthem" for a strong character, continually overshadowed and muted the entire story. A story which is now decades old. By doing this, the simplistic story about friendship, courage, fear, overcoming fear, and sacrifice, was now reduced to internal the Scoundrel. For example, when the Princess planned to escape the Death Star single handedly. This continual theme forced the listener to never really connect with the characters. The emotional struggle was never present, which made the character development two dimensional the Scoundrel never really moved anywhere. I assumed this retelling was going to provide more detail and fill some of the gaps of the original. Instead, I got a reordered, abridged version. I didn't care for it at all. Star Wars: A New Hope the Princess did you like least? How would you have and the Farm Boy the story to make it more enjoyable? Leia's characterization was disappointing. What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike? The performers did a good job. The best parts were the Scoundrel there was interaction between characters. What did you like best about this story? The new focus. The story follows, as the title says, the Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy. The story of Luke on the farm, and Ben Kenobi is glossed a bit over, Star Wars: A New Hope the Princess told in memories of the character and similar.

58 • Articles • Across the Star Wars Universe: A Journey into the World of the Italian Star Wars Fandom GIADA BASTANZI Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice ANDREA FRANCESCHETTI Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice Abstract: In this essay, we perform ethnographic fieldwork on the costuming, prop-making, and performances of the 501st Italica Garrison, the Italian sub-section of the 501st Legion, drawing on the "language" and "speech" theories of Gilbert Ryle and J. N. Findlay (Ryle & Findlay, 1961) and the theoretical position on "strategies" and "tactics" of Michael de Certeau (de Certeau, 2001). While considering the Star Wars franchise and its narratives as a "social phenomenon," we will examine if and how the official Italian fandom’s tactics and performances conform to Henry Jenkins’ concept of "textual poaching" (Jenkins, 2005). In fact, prop-making and collecting performances are in dialectical relation to the narratives of George Lucas, as Lucas’s narratives are in relation to the concepts of Joseph Campbell’s Hero With a Thousand Faces (Campbell, 1949). Vol. 16, no. 1 (2018) New Directions in Folklore 59 Introduction In 2012, LucasFilm Ltd. was purchased by the Disney company. As part of an enormous economic operation, the animation corporation put efforts into broadening the worldwide Star Wars franchise to cultivate the brand and reach more people than ever before. "A long time ago," in 1977, the first film in the franchise, Star Wars: A New Hope was released, creating a generation of fans—and nearly 25 years later, in 2001, The Phantom Menace was released. The new trilogy drew to Star Wars an entirely new generation of fans.

This thesis examines complex narratives from comics, novels, films and video games, but draws upon the transmedia franchises built around Jim Henson’s Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal to provide two primary case studies in how these techniques can be deployed with varying results.

  • “Dark Side”: Star Wars Symbolism and the Acceptance of Torture in the U.S
Going to the “Dark Side”: Star Wars Symbolism and the Acceptance of Torture in the U.S. Security Community. Brenna Bridwell, Eastern Connecticut State University Benjamin Carbonetti, Trinity College Corinne M. Tagliarina, University of Connecticut Annual Meeting of the International Studies Association, March 2016, Atlanta, GA. Many scholars note the important role of analogies and metaphors in the thinking of foreign policy experts. Following the attacks on September 11th 2001, Vice President Cheney famously argued that it was necessary for the United States to work on the “Dark Side” in order to stop future attacks. That Cheney would choose this piece of symbolism, from popular movies entrenched in popular culture indicates he was trying to make a point that would resonate. Although this quote inspired countless Cheney-as-Darth-Vader spoofs and memes, and numerous references in analyses of the “War on Terror”, no study attempts to understand the degree to which the U.S. security community internalized the analogy, especially in regards to the use of torture. The use of language to distance policymakers from horrifying realities (such as nuclear weapons) is well established in the literature. We investigate whether Cheney’s Star Wars analogy facilitated this distancing-through-language as the US increased its use of torture. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) uses text to understand the implicit assumptions regarding truth, morality, and power that make up social relations. We use CDA on national security focused blogs and media from the period to examine the importance of this famous quote and Star Wars symbolism on U.S. strategies during the war on terror.
