  • SURREY CRICKET FOUNDATION 2017 ANNUAL REVIEW Director Of
SURREY CRICKET FOUNDATION 2017 ANNUAL REVIEW Director of Cricket Participation Paul Taylor looks back on a year of change and great achievement right across the county. 2017 has been another incredibly busy year for the Surrey Cricket Foundation (SCF). In February, the Cricket Participation team restructured giving promotions to four very deserving individuals. Vicki Howard, Gavin Reynolds, Mark Babb and Harry Ellis were all promoted to Cricket Participation Officers with Vicki and Gavin taking on the lead for women & girls cricket and disabilities cricket respectively. Mark took the lead on our vast school competitions programme whilst Harry led on all events held at The Kia Oval. More importantly this gave us more resources in terms of club support. With Kim Price and Chevy Green also being club facing, we now have six members of staff working directly with our clubs, with Simon Hards taking on a coordinating role within club development. They have been ably supported by our community coaches and our administration team and whilst there are always continual challenges for us in terms of priorities, we have enjoyed some incredible successes. Our School’s programme, supported by Chance to Shine, has seen the game introduced to over 23,500 children in 2017. Across the Street projects, we again excelled in terms of delivery and the number of attendees. An achievement that has been highlighted by Chance to Shine across the country. Schools Day this year was held at the Royal London one-day match between Surrey and Kent and we saw just under 5,000 children enjoy the experience at The Kia Oval.

Of course, the world has changed over time and to disre- gard the current economy would be fatal. This is undoubtedly the major challenge for the coming years. Addressing it will require men and women who, without losing sight of our founding princi- ples, can also provide new solutions. The required solidarity in a world defined by inequalities is the vital spark igniting FIBA’s humanist work.

From Ithe day I joined the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s elite panel in 2008, two years after I stood in my first international at the Oval, I trained for every game, and in particular Test matches, in pretty much the same way and certainly with a bit more professionalism than when I played for England back in the 1980s when warm-ups usually consisted of a few laps of the outfield and some stretches with the physio Bernard Thomas, who was the equivalent of a modern-day strength and conditioning coach back then. Two days before the game started, I would go down to the ground, dump my gear in the umpires’ 17 GUNNER: MY LIFE IN CRICKET room, wander over to the nets and stand at one end during each team’s practice and just observe. When you think about it, it’s an obvious thing to do. The international game moves so quickly these days that when I began a new series in a different country there were invariably bowlers and batsmen who I had not come across before.

One of Di Venuto's mantras are the three P's - partnerships, patience and pressure. First came the pressure - the pressure of succeeding Graham Ford, then the patience. The Surrey supporters kept faith, by and large, and now we're seeing the partnerships - like the new club record eighth wicket stand between Ben Foakes and Gareth Batty at Southampton, which placed Surrey on their current upward trajectory. If spin twins Batty and Zafar Ansari combine with the ball in the two remaining home games against Lancashire and Hampshire, as we know they can, who knows? Put it this way, we can certainly start thinking in terms of Surrey challenging for the County Championship next summer. Only Surrey have looked like ending Middlesex's unbeaten record in the Champo and what also augurs well for the future is the way they overcame a Warwickshire side that, but for the emergence of Chris Woakes as a serious Test cricketer and a side strain to Chris Wright, might have had a tilt at the crown.

Former Queenslander Ben McDermott, whose father Craig was a 71-Test mainstay of the Australian attack for a dec- ade, crafted his maiden one- day cup century – a classy 117 which laid the foundation for Tasmania’s four-wicket win. Simon Milenko, who was also playing against his former side, pushed Tasmania over the line with a whirlwind unbeaten knock of 50 off just 29 balls as Tasmania reached 6-317 to claim victory with an over to spare. Milenko and Clive Rose (25 not out off 18) added an un- beaten 67 off 38 balls at the death after Tasmania had slipped to 6-250. Queensland posted a chal- lenging 6-316 on the back of a typically big-hitting innings from Lynn who scored 70 from 65 balls including four sixes. “It was a good total, but we thought we could chase it Queensland Bulls star Michael Neser is expecting a tough time in the UAE against Pakistan, but is excited for the chance to make his Test debut Picture: ADAM HEAD down,” said McDermott, who lost the best part of 10kg during an intensive off-season train- ing regimen.
