I won two major trophies and now I can take a third, the first of the season’ By Sahan Bidappa Doha or Claudio Marchisio, 2016 has been a year to forget. The Ju- ventus midfi elder was laid low most of the year by injuries, Fwith a ruptured anterior cruciate liga- ment forcing him to miss the Euro 2016 and the start of the Serie A season. The Italian, who got himself injured while playing for Juventus in April, only made a comeback in the last week of October. While Juventus have con- tinued to dominate the Italian football, Marchisio underwent a painful recov- ery process for six months and is yet to regain his best form. “This year I missed a lot of things because the injury came at the end of the season,” Marchisio said yesterday in Doha. “It wasn’t easy to recover. I was working in the morning and after- noon. It wasn’t easy, and I’m still not at 100 per cent,” he added. However, the 30-year-old is look- ing at the future and wants to end 2016 on a high by winning the Italian Super Cup in Doha tomorrow. The Bianconeri face AC Milan at the Al Sadd stadium, aiming to win the trophy for the fourth time in fi ve seasons. And it’s a perfect opportunity for Marchisio to banish the personal trou- bles, while winning his third title of the year with Old Lady of Turin. “I’m a guy who doesn’t deal with it well when I’m out, I wanted to be strong and on the pitch. My 2016 was bittersweet, but I look at the positives. I won two major trophies and now I can take a third, the fi rst of the season,” he said. Marchisio, who has 263 caps with Juventus, is wary of Milan and believes they will be desperate to make amends for last year’s Coppa Italia fi nal defeat at the hands of Juventus. “It won’t be an easy match against Milan, who have already beaten us in Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio (R) during a training session at the Aspire Arena yesterday. SURREY CRICKET FOUNDATION 2017 ANNUAL REVIEW Director of Cricket Participation Paul Taylor looks back on a year of change and great achievement right across the county. 2017 has been another incredibly busy year for the Surrey Cricket Foundation (SCF). In February, the Cricket Participation team restructured giving promotions to four very deserving individuals. Vicki Howard, Gavin Reynolds, Mark Babb and Harry Ellis were all promoted to Cricket Participation Officers with Vicki and Gavin taking on the lead for women & girls cricket and disabilities cricket respectively. Mark took the lead on our vast school competitions programme whilst Harry led on all events held at The Kia Oval. More importantly this gave us more resources in terms of club support. With Kim Price and Chevy Green also being club facing, we now have six members of staff working directly with our clubs, with Simon Hards taking on a coordinating role within club development. They have been ably supported by our community coaches and our administration team and whilst there are always continual challenges for us in terms of priorities, we have enjoyed some incredible successes. Our School’s programme, supported by Chance to Shine, has seen the game introduced to over 23,500 children in 2017. Across the Street projects, we again excelled in terms of delivery and the number of attendees. An achievement that has been highlighted by Chance to Shine across the country. Schools Day this year was held at the Royal London one-day match between Surrey and Kent and we saw just under 5,000 children enjoy the experience at The Kia Oval.

One of Di Venuto's mantras are the three P's - partnerships, patience and pressure. First came the pressure - the pressure of succeeding Graham Ford, then the patience. The Surrey supporters kept faith, by and large, and now we're seeing the partnerships - like the new club record eighth wicket stand between Ben Foakes and Gareth Batty at Southampton, which placed Surrey on their current upward trajectory. If spin twins Batty and Zafar Ansari combine with the ball in the two remaining home games against Lancashire and Hampshire, as we know they can, who knows? Put it this way, we can certainly start thinking in terms of Surrey challenging for the County Championship next summer. Only Surrey have looked like ending Middlesex's unbeaten record in the Champo and what also augurs well for the future is the way they overcame a Warwickshire side that, but for the emergence of Chris Woakes as a serious Test cricketer and a side strain to Chris Wright, might have had a tilt at the crown.

THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 359 – JANUARY 2017 MEETINGS Wednesday 4 January 2017 The Society warmly welcomes David Smith to this evening’s meeting. He has enjoyed a long career in cricket, first as a player and then as an administrator. He joins a lengthy list of distinguished Warwickshire cricketers to have addressed the Society. Born in Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on 9 July 1956, cricket was in his blood. His father, with whom he shared the same initials – K D – played for Leicestershire in 1950/51. His younger brother, Paul, was an integral member of the Warwickshire side from 1982-96. Kenneth David Smith was educated at Heaton Grammar School. His talent was recognised with his selection for the England Young Cricketers against their counterparts from the West Indies at Stone in Staffordshire in 1974. It was a star- studded cast for the future. Wayne Daniel and Jeffrey Dujon were in the West Indies side. His team mates included Mike Gatting, Chris Tavare and Nick Cook. Opening the innings, our speaker made 11 and 41, the latter being the top score. A right-handed batsman, he had made his first-class debut the year earlier in 1973. He went on to play in 196 matches for Warwickshire until 1985, during which he scored 8718 runs (avge 27.58). For much of that period he opened the innings with Dennis Amiss. The highest of his nine centuries was 140 against Worcestershire at New Road in 1980. That year was his most productive with 1582 runs (avge 36.79).

ANY CORRESPONDENCE REGARDING 'OVAL WORLD' SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO MARCUS HOOK AT FLAT 1, 67 BIRDHURST RISE, SOUTH CROYDON, SURREY, CR2 7EJ or E-MAIL [email protected] FIRST INNINGS - THE HOLY GRAIL by Marcus Hook Surrey may only be two matches into the new season, however it's already clear that climbing out of Division Two of the County Championship will be far from easy. The alliance of the number one batsman in the world, a resurgent Steven Davies and the new found consistency of Rory Burns, sees Surrey's batting in fine fettle. But whereas batsmen (especially those capable of saving a match) are worth their weight in gold in Division One, the best guarantee of promotion in Division Two is bowling sides out twice. Surrey have taken twenty wickets in just ten of their last 47 championship matches. The Essex game underlined that without an overseas fast bowler, experienced England qualified bowlers or both, the holy grail of 20 wickets will be hard to come by; and even harder on surfaces such as the one Glamorgan served up for Surrey's championship curtain-raiser. Given that you need to win a fair proportion of your matches to finish in the top two of the second division, playing on spicy 'result' pitches is a definite advantage. It's a difficult one because if Surrey see themselves challenging for the championship title in a few years time, taking cheap wickets on helpful surfaces will not prepare the likes of Tom Curran and Matt Dunn for bowling to the best batsmen in the country.
