Coach Loew to extend German reign until 2020 ermany’s World Cup-winning coach GJoachim Loew is set to extend his reign until 2020 amidst reports his new contract will be confirmed tomorrow by the Ger- man FA (DFB). German daily Bild reported yesterday that the 56-year-old, who took charge in 2006, will pen a two-year exten- sion to lead Germany’s defence of the World Cup in Russia in 2018 and to the European Championships in 2020. Loew, who led die Mannschaft to their fourth World Cup title in Brazil two years ago, is set to receive a huge pay rise to four million euros ($4.4mn) per year. His current contract, which expires after the 2018 World Cup, reportedly earned him an annual salary of around three mn euros. If Loew stays in off ice until 2020, his 14-year reign would make him the joint second-longest serving Germany coach, equal to Helmut Schoen (1964-78). Sepp Herberger holds the 28-year record, from 1936-64, during which time he led West Ger- many to their first World Cup title in 1954. SPOTLIGHT Rea clinches back-to-back World Superbike crowns Davies won the race at the Losail International Circuit as Rea finished second, but it was enough to wrap up the title

By Joe Koraith Doha Kawasaki's Jonathan Rea (right) started from pole but was no match for the speed of Chaz Davies who won the race by 3.9 seconds. his time there were not going to be any misses. History books could not help but include Jonathan Rea in their an- nals. The Kawasaki Racing Team rider Twon his second WSBK title at the Losail Inter- national Circuit yesterday and became the fi rst rider in 17 years to win back to back titles in WSBK. Rea needed just two points from the two races in Qatar to win the championship. And he fi nished with 20 points having fi n- ished in second position in Race 1 to comfortably wrap up the title. Rea put himself in fantastic position to win the title by grabbing the pole position for Race 1. To put things into perspective, this was only the second time this season that Rea has managed to do that. Chaz Davies riding the Ducati for Aru- ba.it Racing got off to a great start, which saw him move from third to taking the hole-shot at the fi rst corner. Honda World Superbike Team’s Nicky Hayden briefl y overtook Rea but the champion was able to wrestle it back in the very next corner. Davies went on to claim a great vic- tory, his 10th win this season while Rea brought home his bike in second to win a historic second title. His teammate Sykes who brought himself up to fourth but then dropped to fi fth after he was overtaken by Sylvain Guintoli (Pata Yamaha Offi cial WorldSBK Team) who went on to take the fi nal step on the podium. The outside chance that Sykes had before the race had vanished when Rea disappeared into the distance. For Qatar, home boy Saed al- Sulaiti fi nished in 17th place. He has the second race to put on a better show. Rea will remember this Qatar race for a long time to come. “Not just winning the WSBK championship, which is a hotly contested aff air but to win it back to back is an incredible feel- ing. The feeling will sink in after a few weeks,” said Rea after the race. “The 2016 ZX10R was launched earlier this year and during the winter tests we realised that there was a lot of work to do. I am happy to win the championship in the fi rst year for this model,” added Rea. Last season, the ZX10R was a well-oiled ma- chined that helped Rea dominate proceedings but the new model posed a lot of problems for the Kawasaki rider and he feels that this title is sweeter than the one he won last season. “Last season we were winning for fun. We won the championship at a ridiculous early point in the season. We almost achieved the points record. But when we went into the testing, even though I was a world champion, I felt like an underdog. The challenges we faced makes this title sweet- er,” he added.
