Year 5 Reading Fluency – Week 7 – 22.02.2021 Group 2, 3 & 4: Please look through this pack carefully and complete the tasks as thoroughly as possible. You will find other resources to support you included in this reading pack, such as dictionary definitions for identified vocabulary that you should learn and become familiar with. In addition, please log on to the school YouTube channel where there will be video films of each session to support you with your learning. The film clips to accompany these sessions will be titled: Year 5 Reading Fluency – Week 7 – 22.02.2021 Group 2, 3 & 4 Reading Text – ‘The Rovers: Curiosity’ article by NASA There are five sessions per week where you will be able to practise reading fluently every day. Please read the text provided repeatedly over the course of the five sessions to improve your understanding of the text. Day 1: Teacher will read text first. Read and annotate the text – definitions of unfamiliar vocabulary. Day 2: Read and annotate the text – definitions of unfamiliar vocabulary (unpick phrases). Day 3: Read text, summarise and then answer ‘Getting Started’ questions. Day 4: Read text and answer ‘Making Headway’ questions. Day 5: Read the text and answer ‘Aiming High’ questions.

How to use this booklet: On the first day of the introduction of a new text, the teacher will read it to you first (watch film clip). As the teacher is reading the text to you, underline unfamiliar words or phrases (the definitions may be searched for during or after each session). Each day, read the text along with the teacher, and then practise reading the text independently. Annotate the text – discuss unfamiliar language or phrases to ensure you understand the text before answering the questions. Answer the questions in the following order: 1. Getting Started 2. Making Headway 3. Aiming High Please refer to the definition sheet for support where necessary (at the back of the pack). If there is vocabulary not identified in the pack that you wish to look up the definition for, please use an online dictionary, such as the Collins Dictionary. Space agency – agencies engaged in activities related to outer space and space exploration. NASA – the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) explore – If you explore a place, you travel around it to find out what it is like. Red Planet – Mars is known as the Red Planet because in the soil oxidize, or rust, causing the soil and atmosphere to look red. successfully – Something that is successful achieves what it was intended to achieve. landed – A landing is an act of bringing an aircraft or spacecraft down to the ground. rover – a small remote-controlled vehicle which roams over rough, especially extraterrestrial, terrain taking photographs, gathering rock and soil samples, etc. surface – The surface of something is the flat top part of it or the outside of it. exploring – If you explore a place, you travel around it to find out what it is like. Earth – Earth or the Earth is the planet on which we live. People usually say Earth when they are referring to the planet as part of the universe, and the Earth when they are talking about the planet as the place where we live. conditions – the state of something with regard to its appearance, quality, or working order. Curiosity rover – Curiosity is a car-sized Mars rover designed to explore the crater on Mars as part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission. Curiosity was launched from Cape Canaveral on November 26, 2011, at 15:02 UTC and landed on inside Gale on Mars on August 6, 2012 Mars – Also called: the Red Planet the fourth planet from the sun, having a reddish-orange surface with numerous dark patches and two white polar caps. It has a thin atmosphere, mainly carbon dioxide, and low surface temperatures. Spacecraft encounters have revealed a history of volcanic activity and running surface water. The planet has two tiny satellites, and . Mean distance from sun: 228 million km; period of revolution around sun: 686.98 days; period of axial rotation: 24.6225 hours; diameter and mass: 53.2 and 10.7 per cent that of earth respectively. robot – A robot is a machine which is programmed to move and perform certain tasks automatically. planet – A planet is a large, round object in space that moves around a star. The Earth is a planet. SUV – An SUV is a powerful vehicle with four-wheel drive that can be driven over rough ground. SUV is an abbreviation for 'sport utility vehicle'. travels – If you travel, you go from one place to another, often to a place that is far away. Gale Crater – Gale is a crater, and probable dry lake, at 5°24′S 137°48′E / 5.4°S 137.8°E / -5.4; 137.8 in the north-western part of the on Mars.

16 crater – A crater is a large hole in the ground, which has been caused by something hitting it or by an explosion. special – Someone or something that is special is better or more important than other people or things. mountain – A mountain is a very high area of land with steep sides. layers – A layer of a material or substance is a quantity or piece of it that covers a surface or that is between two other things. rock – Rock is the hard substance which the Earth is made of. minerals – Common minerals include quartz, feldspar, mica, amphibole, olivine, and calcite. A rock is an aggregate of one or more minerals, or a body of undifferentiated matter. Common rocks include granite, , limestone, and sandstone. A mineral is a substance such as , salt, or sulphur that is formed naturally in rocks and in the earth. Minerals are also found in small quantities in food and drink. time periods – time period - an amount of time; "a time period of 30 years"; "hastened the period of time of his recovery"; "Picasso's blue period" period, period of time. fundamental measure, fundamental quantity - one of the four quantities that are the basis of systems of measurement. scientists – A scientist is someone who has studied science and whose job is to teach or do research in science. radiation - Radiation consists of very small particles of a radioactive substance. Large amounts of radiation can cause illness and death. history – You can refer to the events of the past as history. You can also refer to the past events which concern a particular topic or place as its history. A history is an account of events that have happened in the past. energy - Energy is the power from sources such as electricity and coal that makes machines work or provides heat. scientific instruments – A scientific instrument is, broadly speaking, a device or tool used for scientific purposes, including the study of both natural phenomena and theoretical research. study – A study of a subject is a piece of research on it. If you study something, you look at it or watch it very carefully, in order to find something out. drill – A drill is a tool or machine that you use for making holes.
