Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits.

Remarkable for the fauna of Northwest-Germany are the records of Aporus unicolor, Arachnospila wesmaeli, Ceropales maculata, Cryptocheilus notatus, Episyron albonotatum, and Evagetes gibbulus. Remarks on the biology, phenology, abundance, and endangerment of the species are gi - ven. Our data together with data from the literature are compiled in a checklist for the spi - der wasps of Westphalia. The results emphasize the importance of the primary and secon - dary sand habitats for the Westphalian spider-wasps. 1.

Abstract: From 1986 to 1997, 85 species of Vespoidea („Scolioidea“ 8 species, Ve- spidae 41, Pompilidae 36) could be recorded in the Lauterach Jura Mountains (Oberpfalz). Among 32 species of the Red Data List of Bavaria, 14 rare and endan- gered ones are commented more detailed. Some characteristic species of the meso- xerophytic meadows are remarkable, especially the very rare wasps of rocky habi- tats Agenioideus nubecula (Pompilidae) and Eumenes subpomiformis (Eumeninae). • Predatory Aculeata (Hymenoptera) of Moist Meadows on the Mazovian Lowland
POLISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES • INSTITUTE OF ZOOLOGY MEMORABILIA ZOOLOGICA MEMORABILIA ZOOL. 43 289-296 1989 EWA SKIBIŃSKA PREDATORY ACULEATA (HYMENOPTERA) OF MOIST MEADOWS ON THE MAZOVIAN LOWLAND ABSTRACT Forty-nine species of predatory Aculeata were recorded on a flowerless mown moist meadow (Arrhenatheretum medioeuropaeum). They included 31 Sphecidae species, 8 Pompilidae, 7 Vespoidea and 3 Chrysididae. The Aculeata fauna (of the specified families) of this environment was not numerous and, except for Sphecidae, poor as regards its species composition. The majority of the examined Aculeata populated afforested areas, penetrating the mea dow only in search of food. Only 7 out of all the species identified in the sampled material were more tightly associated with the meadow environment, namely Cerceris rybyensis, Argogorytes fargei, Nysson interruptus, Oxybelus umiglumis, O. victor, O. nigripes among Sphecidae, and Paravespula germanica among Vespoidea. INTRODUCTION The links binding predatory Aculeata to various environments have been so far scarcily dealt with in literature. A majority of the published faunistic works supplied only fragmentary data on the occurrence of these insects in their prefer red sites, e.g. on blooming shrubs or on melliferous herbaceous plants, yet no data defining the type of the environment were provided. No studies have been ever conducted on the predatory Aculeata fauna occurring on open areas in Poland. The only available scanty information dealt with their occurrence on potato (Anasiewicz 1976) and rapeseed cultures (Mi czul ski 1967). The data provi ded by the whole European literature are very scarce as well. The only complex studies on the entire Aculeata fauna of open areas were published by Professor Śnoflak in 1944.

Biodiversity Data Journal 4: e8050. doi: 10.3897/BDJ.4.e8050 Abstract Background The checklist of British and Irish aculeate Hymenoptera (Apoidea, Chrysidoidea and Vespoidea) is revised. Species distribution is summarised for all species at the level of country (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Isle of Man). New information The 601 native species represent an increase of 25 on the 1978 checklist, comprising mostly new discoveries. This increase is nearly balanced by the 23 species now presumed to be extinct in Britain and Ireland. Keywords Britain, Ireland, bees, ants, wasps, fauna © Else G et al. Introduction The checklist of British and Irish aculeates is essentially that of Else et al. (2004) but with several additions and updated taxonomy. • Chemistry and Pharmacology of Solitary Wasp Venoms

Conclusion 287 References 289 I. INTRODUCTION This chapter reviews our present knowledge on the pharmacology and chemistry of venoms produced by solitary wasps. Among the Hymenoptera that produce a venom the social wasps (Chapter 6), bees (Chapter 7) and ants (Chapter 9) are most familiar to men. The venoms of these social Hymenoptera are used by these insects for defending themselves and their colonies. These venoms produce pain and local damage in large vertebrates and are lethal to insects and small vertebrates. Multiple stings of bees, ants or wasps, as well as allergic reactions, may be responsible for killing larger vertebrates. Of all solitary wasps, only some bethylid species may attack humans (see Bethylioidea, Section II,B,3). In this discussion the term social wasps refers to members of the Vespinae, despite the fact that some wasps, while taxonomically included in solitary wasp families, display social or semi-social life. If, for example, hymenopteran social behaviour is simply defined by the activity of an individual benefiting the larvae of another individual of the same species, then the sphecid wasp Microstigmus comes must be qualified as a social wasp (Matthews, 1968). If sociality is the condition shown by species in which there is division of labour, then the guarding behaviour of males of the sphecid Tachytes 161 VENOMS OF THE HYMENOPTERA Copyright © 1986 by Academic Press Inc.
