The Language of Race & Class in Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy Daniel Lefkowitz Department of Anthropology University of Virginia [email protected] 1 April 2017 Author Profile: Daniel Lefkowitz is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Virginia. His early work focused on the politics of language use in Israel, published as the 2004 Oxford University Press book, Words and Stones: The Politics of Language and Identity in Israel. More recent work on the sociolinguistics of Hollywood cinema has been published as a 2005 Semiotica essay, “On the Relation between Sound and Meaning in Hicks’ Snow Falling on Cedars.” Abstract: This essay contrasts the visual hyper-presence of racial diversity in Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy to its aural absence, arguing that two episodes from the show’s 2nd season construct diametrically opposed visions of the role of white and black forms of non-standard speech. While non-standard forms of language that construct blackness are – when they appear at all on the show – condemned as obstacles to the medical outcomes the show valorizes, non-standard forms of language that construct working-class whiteness appear frequently on the show, and are recuperated by the plots and characters. The sociolinguistic patterns thus re-instate hegemonic ideas about race that the color-blind casting Rhimes is famous for seeks to subvert. The Language of Race & Class in Grey’s Anatomy Page 1 Film studies has a long and serious engagement with the representation of race in Hollywood cinema,1 yet the discipline’s focus on visual aspects of films (at the expense of the aural and especially language, speech, and dialogue) leaves many impactful perspectives unexplored.

2019 Tournament Problem No. 18–00324–CV Jordan Webber, § In the 85th District Court Individually and as § Independent Executor of the § Estate of Adele Webber, § § v. § § Isobel Stevens Duquette, § Denny Duquette, Sr., and § South Texas Cares, Inc. § Capitol County, South Texas PRETRIAL CONFERENCE REPORT After a hearing before the Court with counsel for both parties present, the Court determines: 1. This is a wrongful death lawsuit to recover damages. 2. Jordan Webber brought this suit individually and as the legal representative of Adele Webber’s estate, claiming Isobel Stevens Duquette, Denny Duquette, Sr., and South Texas Cares, Inc. wrongfully caused the death of Adele Webber by conspiring to deprive her of a heart transplant that could have and would have saved her life. 3. Isobel Stevens Duquette, Denny Duquette, Sr., and South Texas Cares, Inc. have generally denied the allegations. PRETRIAL CONFERENCE REPORT — 1 4. This Court granted summary judgment on liability because certain facts are undisputed. The defendants breached, or participated in the breach of, confidentiality. But for the defendant’s actions, the donated heart at issue in this case would have gone to Adele Webber. The defendants entered into, or facilitated, a financial transaction where the heart was not only diverted from Adele Webber but was also the subject of a quid pro quo arrangement in violation of South Texas law. As a result, no genuine issue of material fact exists as to whether the defendants are substantive liable. 5. This Court bifurcated the trial of the remaining issues in this case. The trial of the first phase was held January 14-18, 2019.

  • How Grey's Anatomy Fooled Me Into Thinking I Had Cancer
Intersect, Vol 13, No 2 (2020) How Grey’s Anatomy Fooled Me into Thinking I Had Cancer: A Conversation on the Uses of Empathy and Misinformation in Medical Dramas Neil Wary Stanford University Abstract It’s often hard to distinguish between fact and opinion, especially in today’s age of media. This becomes a controversial topic once the media disperses information that could potentially be harmful to the public, particularly involving medicine. In this essay, a patient case is used as motivation to understand the complex relationship between medical misinformation in the media and empathy. Following is a discussion of how misinformation and empathy work with the human mind, and how medical dramas use them to their advantage. Then, Grey’s Anatomy is used as a case study to see how the show implements empathy and misinformation. Finally, an analysis of the positives and negatives of the medical drama is presented along with suggestions of how to improve medical dramas – particularly looking at possible outcomes for positive change in this medium of communication. Wary, How Grey’s Anatomy Fooled Me Acknowledgements To Dr. Rebecca Richardson, Program in Writing and Rhetoric Professor at Stanford University, for helping with the preparation and revision of this manuscript. 2 Wary, How Grey’s Anatomy Fooled Me A 19-year-old male with no past medical history presents in clinic with tachycardia. The patient was scheduled for a stress echocardiogram to assess heart structure and function. In the initial ultrasound, however, a mass was found in the patient’s heart. The patient’s stress echocardiogram was cancelled, and the patient was referred to a cardiologist.

  • MEDIA GUIDE 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship a Chance to See the Best Ice Hockey Players
MEDIA GUIDE 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship A chance to see the best ice hockey players One misconception about the IIHF World Junior Championships is that it features “future” stars. If you look at the development of the event, you will realize that this magnificent tournament features players who are world class stars already today. The World Juniors also show, by the way, how quickly a year goes by. Let’s take you back to December 2012 and the IIHF World U20 event in Ufa, Russia. Canada’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who led the tournament in scoring with 15 points in 6 games is today an integral part of the Edmonton Oilers while his countrymen Jonathan Huberdeau (9 points in 6 games in Ufa) and Mark Scheifele (8 points in 6 games) are the future of the Florida Panthers and Winnipeg Jets respectively. USA’s All-Star defenseman and gold winner in Ufa, Jacob Trouba, is playing sensationally well for the Winnipeg while teammate Alex Galchenyuk personifies the new generation Montreal Canadiens. Last year’s dominating Finns Joel Armia and Markus Granlund have both signed NHL contracts and are biding their time in the AHL, but Swedes Filip Forsberg, Elias Lindholm and Rickard Rakell have all played NHL games this season. So think about this when you watch the 38th IIHF World Junior event in Malmö – you may most likely have one chance to see the best players. Next year they are probably celebrated professionals either in the NHL or in any of the European leagues. A good example of the natural turnover is the defending World Champion United States: from last year’s golden roster in Ufa only there are only three returnees on the 2014 team.

I know it didn’t seem like the best decision at the time, but everything happens for a reason, right? I was simply trusting my cape. Additionally, I would like to thank my big little brother, Jeffrey Lacko, for making me laugh and keeping me sane and humble while I was off succeeding. I am so blessed to have such a (large) loving and supportive family. I would like to thank my grandfather, Jack Strong, for instilling an interest and love of education in me at a young age. I would also like to thank my extended Lacko and Strong families for constantly reminding me that learning can be cool, too. Molly, I may never figure out why I came to graduate school, but I know I wouldn’t have gotten through it without you.

Ten teams vie for U20 gold in Sweden There’s an old Christmas carol that says ‘it’s the most wonderful time of year’. And as we look ahead to the upcoming holiday events, I can say that I heartily agree with that sentiment. ■■ For us at the International Ice Hockey Federation, the World U20 Championship always signi- fies a new beginning. It is our first major event of the season and time when we get to join the rest of the hockey world in the thick of their seasons.
