Out of the proposed 10 exploratory drilling wells, 3 exploratory drilling wells fall in Rudrasagar PML area, 3 exploratory drilling wells fall in Lakwa PML area, 1 exploratory drilling well fall in Geleki PML area, 1 exploratory drilling well fall in Namti PML area and 2 exploratory drilling wells in Mekeypo Re-Santak Nazira PML area of Sivasagar district, Assam. This chapter describes the purpose of the report, identification of project and proponent, brief description of nature, size, location of the project and importance to the region and country. The chapter also describes the scope of the study, details of regulatory scoping carried out as per Terms of Reference (TOR) issued by Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), New Delhi. 1.1 Purpose of the Report As per Environmental Impact Assessment Notification dated 14th September, 2006 and 01.12.2009, the proposed project falls under category ‘A’, Schedule 1(b) and requires Environmental Clearance (EC) to be obtained from Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) before the commencement of ground activity. Guwahati is the gateway to northeastern India. The name is a combination of two words - Guwa meaning areca nut and Hat meaning market. Guwahati is the commercial nerve centre of the Northeast. 1.2 LOCATION Geographical extension of Guwahati city is 91°33'18.141" E and 91°10'41.005 "E Longitude and 25° 59' 33.183" N and 26° 15' 50.945" N Latitudes.. Assamese of Old Indo- Aryan dialects, though the exact nature of its origin and growth in not clear yet. The Standard dialect which is considered as the Standard Assamese Language is an Indo-Aryan language designated as the official language of Assam, is a state located in the North- eastern part of India. In Assam, Standard Assamese is the formal written language used for education, media and other official purpose, while Kamrupi and Goalparia are the informal spoken dialects spoken in the Kamrup and Goalpara districts of Assam, respectively. The importance of Kamrupi dialect can be understood from early literature, wherein Kamrupi was documented as the first ancient Aryan literary language spoken both in the Brahmaputra valley of Assam and North Bengal. This stud yis a comparative study between both the varieties. It also explores the usage of dialectal variety found in Kamrupi and Sibsagar dialects of Assam. Another area of interest is to find out whether the Kamrupi dialect is used in speaking or both for speaking and writing purposes in Assam.     REGIONS OF ASSAM Geographically Assam is situated in the north-eastern region of the Indian sub- continent. It covers an area of 78,523 sq. kilometres (approximate). Assam – the gateway to north-east India is a land of blue hills, valleys and rivers. Assam has lavishly bestowed upon unique natural beauty and abundant natural wealth. The natural beauty of Assam is one of the most fascinating in the country with evergreen forests, majestic rivers, rich landscape, lofty green hills, bushy grassy plains, rarest flora and fauna, beautiful islands and what not. The capital of Assam is Dispur and the state emblem is one-hoed rhino. Assam is bounded by Manipur, Nagaland and Myanmar in the east and in the rest by West Bengal in the north by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh and in the route by Mizoram, Tripura, Bangladesh and Meghalaya. Literacy rate in Assam has seen upward trend and is 72.19 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy stands at 77.85 percent while female literacy is at 66.27 percent. As per details from Census 2011, Assam has population of 3.12 Crores, an increase from figure of 2.67 Crore in 2001 census. Total population of Assam as per 2011 census is 31,205,576 of which male and female are 15,939,443 and 15,266,133 respectively. In 2001, total population was 26,655,528 in which males were 13,777,037 while females were 12,878,491. The total population growth in this decade was 17.07 percent while in previous decade it was 18.85 percent.
