Bridges and Strategies Spanning the 20th and 21st Centuries A Personal View Congratulations to the University's Senate Standing Committee on the Status of Women and its executive body, the Office of Gender Equity, for sponsoring and organising this Breakfast and the Affirmative Action Award to recognise, publicise, promote and celebrate the advancement of women at the University of Queensland. I particularly commend the Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor and Feminist of the Decade, Professor Ted Brown, for his outstanding, long term support of the Committee, both intellectually and financially. Forgive me whilst I reminisce and return to Disney's Frontierland and tell tall tales but true from the legendary past. When I commenced my law degree at UQ in 1972, lobbying by women law students had just resulted in the provision of the first dedicated women's toilets within the law faculty.

    4 November 2013 Access to Justice Productivity Commission GPO Box 1428 Canberra City ACT 2601 By email: [email protected] Dear Commissioner, Access to Justice Arrangements - Productivity Commission Issues Paper (Sept. 2013) Thank you for the opportunity to make a submission into the Productivity Commission’s Inquiry into Access to Justice Arrangements. Our submission is focused on the issues raised in Chapter 12 of the Commission’s Issues Paper, Effective and responsive legal services. We pay particular regard to the role of law students in the delivery of legal assistance services, which we note is an issue that appears to have been overlooked by the Commission when compiling its Issues Paper. The matters raised in our submission are not intended to de-value calls for increased public funding for the legal assistance sector, which we recognise is an area of acute need. We recommend that the Productivity Commission: 1. considers the cost and value of embedding clinical teaching within curricula at all Australian law schools; 2. considers a strategy to develop a sustainable funding matrix for clinical legal education to be offered by all Australian law schools; 3. recognises the value of law student involvement in the delivery of pro bono legal services. UQ Pro Bono Centre The UQ Pro Bono Centre (the Centre) was established in 2009 as a partnership of the TC Beirne School of Law at the University of Queensland. The Centre’s primary function is to provide clinical legal education and pro bono learning opportunities for law students. In fulfilling this role the Centre seeks to build a positive culture of, and a commitment to, pro bono legal service both amongst staff and students of the law school.

It is a pleasure to once again have the opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students over this past year across a wide variety of advocacy competitions. I would like to begin by acknowledging the tremendous contribution of our coaches, sponsors and supporters, who enrich our advocacy program with their time, resources and expertise. The achievements outlined throughout the program would not be possible without their generous support. GENEVIÈVE MURRAY We have much to celebrate this evening. In 2017, our Director of Mooting teams travelled far and wide, meeting with a variety of opportunities and challenges on four different continents. The year began with our very impressive team of Jessup mooters, who not only claimed a spot in the Final 16 of the international rounds, but who were also recognised for producing the best respondent memorial in the entire competition (contested by some 650 teams globally). Our Castan Centre Human Rights Law Moot team came away as Grand Champions and our delegation at the Australia Law Students’ Association competition again took first place in the Paper Presentation.
