Legendary NHS Football Coach Vito Capizzo Passes Away NHS Legendary NHS Football Coach Vito Capizzo Passes Away We were sad to hear last Thursday night of the passing of long time Nantucket High School varsity football, Vito Capizzo. For 45 years (1963 - 2008) Coach Capizzo patrolled the Whaler sidelines and became an icon in the world of high school football building one the most well respected high school football programs in the state of Massachusetts. Through his long tenure at Nantucket High School Coach Capizzo served our school as a respected teacher, coach, and administrator. The man that was approximately referred to by all as "Coach", touched the lives of so many both within our school and within our community. While his presence will be truly missed, he leaves a legacy of "Whaler Pride" that will always be remembered and cherished by all. We extend our sincere sympathies to Vito's wife Barbara, his son Scott, and the entire Capizzo family. It did bring a smile to the faces of those grieving, to know that just 2 days before his death, Vito's son Scott and his wife were blessed with the birth of a baby boy, the "Coaches" grandson, Vito Li Capizzo. How fitting that his son would choose to honor his father's name. May you rest in piece my friend ! NHS Athletics Update Monday - 5/21/18 Even with another week of tough weather, most of our NHS athletic teams managed to complete multiple game dates over the past week. This week's NHS team play was highlighted by the Girls Lax Team's qualifying for 2018 MIAA state tournament play. Below you will find a summary of game play, current status, and scheduled events for each of our Whaler spring sport teams. 2018 NHS Girls Lax The NHS girls lax team played two (2) games this past week: On Tuesday (5/15/18) the NHS girls lax traveled to Hyannis for a league game vs. Sturgis East Public Charter School. The Lady Whalers controlled the game from beginning to end, building a 9 - 0 halftime lead and cruising to a 15 - 2 final score win. Leading the attack for the Whalers against SE were Katherine Pittman with 3 goals; Alexa Aloisi, Mae Blackwell, Sarah Daume, and Katherine Coleman with 2 goals each; and Natalie Gammons who moved from her normal defensive position to contribute a goal and an assist. Tuesday's win was the girls 8th of the season and insured them of a seeding in the 2018 MIAA State Tournament. Congratulations ladies ! On Thursday (5/17/18) the girls lax team traveled to Falmouth High School for a non league. The division 2 "Clippers" proved too strong for the "Lady Whaler" and handed our girls a 19 - 3 loss. Nina Wilson was the lone bright spot for the Lady Whalers on Thursday scoring all 3 Nantucket goals. The NHS girls lax team now has an overall record of 8 wins - 4 losses. The Lady Whalers have a Cape & Islands League record of 8 wins - 1 loss. On the schedule this week for the Lady Whalers girls lax team are three (3) games (with 1 at home and 2 away). The girls are scheduled to host league leading Falmouth Academy on Monday (5/21/18) with a 4:00 PM scheduled start time; travel to Saint John Paul II High School on Wednesday (5/23/18) for a 4:30 PM scheduled start time; and then travel to Hyannis on Thursday (5/24/18) for game with Sturgis West Public Charter School scheduled for a 4:30 PM start. 2018 NHS Boys Lax The NHS boys lacrosse team played just one (1) game this past week: On Thursday (5/17/18) the Whalers traveled to Nauset Regional High School. The Division 2 "Warriors" handed our boys only their second loss of the season defeating the Whalers by a score of 9 - 5. Leading the Whaler scoring attack in Thursday's game were Alex Small with 2 goals and Torane Burton, Ty Harishfeger, and Darian Duarte with 1 goal a piece. The NHS boys lax team now has an overall record of 13 wins - 2 losses. The boys lax team remains undefeated in Cape & Islands League play with a record of 10 wins - 0 losses. The boys lax team has a busy week ahead with 3 games on the schedule. The boys will travel to Falmouth Academy on Monday (5/21/18) with a 4:00 PM scheduled start time; will host North Quincy High School on Tuesday (5/22/18) with a 4:00 PM scheduled start time; and will host Sturgis East Public Charter School on Thursday (5/24/18) with a 4:30 PM scheduled start time. NHS Softball The NHS softball team played 3 games over the past week: On Tuesday (5/15/18) the Lady Whalers hosted Sturgis West Public Charter School in a league game. The Lady Whalers came out swinging scoring 12 first inning runs and cruising to a 5 inning mercy rule win by a score of 15 - 2. The 12 run first inning was highlighted by a 2 RBI double from Jadelen Harold; a 2 run home run by Jazia Matheney; a 3 run home run by Jenn Lamb; and a solo home run by Madlyn Lamb. Madlyn Lamb had another good outing in the pitching circle for the Whalers on Tuesday, allowing 2 runs, on 5 hits while recording 7 strikeouts. On Thursday (5/17/18) the Lady Whalers traveled to Monomoy Regional for a game with the Cape and Islands League first place Sharks. The Lady Whalers broke a 0 - 0 tie in the 4th inning when Stephanie Ryder (courtesy runner for pitcher Madlyn Lamb who had been awarded first after being hit by a pitch) stole second, stole third, and then scored on an over throw on the steal attempt to give our girls a 1 - 0 lead. The lead was short lived as Monomoy came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Sharks would add an insurance run in the 6th and sending the Lady Whalers home with a tough 3- 1 loss. The Lady Whalers were right back on the field on Friday (5/18/18) hosting Falmouth High School in a non league game. A pitchers duel saw Falmouth carry a 1 - 0 lead into the 5th inning where the Clippers (aided by some Whaler fielding errors) plated 3 additional runs to push their lead to 4 - 0. The Whalers got 1 run back in the bottom of the 5th on a Marina Caspe single, Caspe stolen base, and RBI single from Madlyn Lamb. Madlyn Lamb was the "hard luck loser" in Friday's game with a line of 7 innings pitched - 4 runs (0 earned) - on 2 hits - striking out 10. The Lady Whaler softball team now has an overall record of 7 wins - 7 losses and a Cape & Islands League record of 6 wins - 3 losses. The NHS Softball team has a very busy week with 4 away games, including a Saturday double header, on the schedule. The Lady Whalers are scheduled to travel to Saint John Paul II High School on Tuesday (5/22/18) with a 4:30 PM scheduled start time; travel to Rising Tide Charter School on Thursday with a 3:30 PM schedule start time; and then travel to Georgetown High School on Saturday for a double header with game 1 scheduled for 12:00 PM and game 2 scheduled for 2:00 PM. NHS Baseball The NHS baseball team split a pair of games this past week: On Tuesday (5/15/18) the Whalers traveled to Hyannis for a league game with Sturgis West Public Charter School. The Whalers jumped out to a quick 4 - 0 first inning lead on an RBI triple by senior catcher Jack Holdgate and an RBI single by Maxx Cunningham. Cunningham, aided by errorless Whaler defense, got the complete game win going 7 innings while allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5. On Friday (5/18/18) the Whalers traveled to Monomoy Regional for a game with the league leading Sharks. Trailing 2 - 0 the Whalers pulled within 1 in the 5th inning on an RBI double by Charlie Howard that made it a 2 - 1 game. Down 3 - 1 going into the 7th Charlie Howard singled, stole 2nd, and then scored on an error to close the gap to 3-2, but the Whalers rally would end there and leave our boys with a tough 3- 2 loss. In Thursday's game Dawson Cunningham (4 innings) and Orion Daley (2 innings) shared the pitching duties. Both Whaler hurlers turned in strong performance on the day. The NHS Whaler baseball team now has an overall record of 3 wins - 8 losses on the season and a Cape and Islands League record of 2 win - 8 losses. The NHS baseball team has 3 games on the schedule this week (2 home and 1 away). NHS baseball team is scheduled to host Saint John Paul II High School on Tuesday (5/22/18) with a 4:30 PM scheduled start time; host Rising Tide Charter School on Thursday (5/24/18) with a 4:30 PM scheduled start time; and than travel to Martha's Vineyard Regional High School on Saturday (5/26/18) with a 12:30 PM scheduled start time.
