Despite all the challenges of lockdowns and the nation’s roller- coasting battle with Covid-19 we have been able to complete a dozen functions in the last 12 months, albeit the majority by ‘Zoom’, allowing us to make another substantial donation to our gold charity partners the Ponting Foundation. Among the Zoom guests were Test offspinner Ashley Mallett, authors David Frith, Dan Liebke, Craig Dodson and Wes Cusworth and leading Australian women Annabel Sutherland and Rachael Haynes. We were also pleased to hold our annual dinner, which Covid- 19 had precluded from being held in 2020. Cricket’s fraternity and friendships were never more important than in July when our dinner guest, Test fast bowler James Pattinson was in touch on the Wednesday, telling me that a personal issue precluded his attendance for the Friday. There was just 48 hours to go and Victoria’s head coach Chris Rogers stepped in. Chris Rogers demonstrating how high the Master should be raising his arm when bowling! Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. My playing days ended after I moved away from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, where I represented Ridley Cricket Club against teams as distant as 100 miles away. The faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington has been a source of inspiration to me during my tenure there. Alusine Jalloh, my Dissertation Committee Chairman, challenged me to look beyond my pre-set Master’s Degree horizon during our initial conversation in 2000. He has been inspirational, conscientious and instructive; qualities that helped set a pattern for my own discipline.     VICTOR TRUMPER (1877-1915) 88. THE BELDAM PHOTOGRAVURE This photogravure by George Beldam was published by the Swan Electric Engraving Company in 1905 but is based on a photograph taken at The Oval during the 1902 tour. It is surely the ultimate iconic image in cricket, rivaling even the face and beard of WG Grace. This is a fine example, printed on thick art paper with generous margins (image size 38cm x 30cm), framed and glazed in a period vintage frame and signed clearly by Trumper. The photogravure process was the pinnacle of techniques for fine art reproduction of a photograph. £1400 31 1 VICTOR TRUMPER’S LAST BAT Victor Trumper is arguably the most magical name in the history of Australian cricket. Even Bradman does not attract the awe and reverence reserved for the man who Archie MacLaren described in these words: “Myself, I was considered out of a good stable. They talked of my grand manner. Well, compared to Victor, I was an honest selling plater in the company of a Derby thoroughbred.” This Ashes year of 2015 sees not only a new breed of dashing Australian batsmen visit our cricket fields but also marks the hundredth anniversary since Trumper died at the heartrendingly early age of 37. Why was Trumper idolized so much at the time and why is he still remembered with such affection to this day? His batting, of course, was the core but it was not the weight of runs or size of his average that instilled such passions. Without being too trite, it was simply “the way he played the game”.

    THE TRUMPER BIOGRAPHIES Martin Sharp Canberra Ashley Mallett, Trumper: The Illustrated Biography. The Greatest Batsman of Cricket's Golden Age. Macmillan, Melbourne, 1985, pp.228. $29.95 - and Peter Sharpham, Trumper: The Definitive Biography. Hodder & Stoughton, Sydney, 1985. Illus. pp.245. $24.95. These books provide welcome and long overdue studies of Australia's most stylish batsman. It is odd that, although Trumper 93 died over sixty years ago, no acceptable biography has been pro- duced until now. Lionel Brown's Victor Trumper and the 1902 Australians (1981) was a thorough account of a single season but Jack Fingle- ton's The Immortal Victor Trumper (1978) fell well short of the mark. Mallett does not attempt a definitive biography, admitting in his introduction that 'no doubt there are bits and pieces missing', but this does not detract from the publication. The Illustrated Biography is a large format 'coffee-table' book which, like its pre- decessor (Michael Page's Bradman: The Illustrated Biography published in 1983), relies on extensive illustrations and a light, but thorough, summary of the cricketer's life and exploits. Indeed I hope that the Macmillan company continues this excellent series. In addition to the illustrations, Mallett has found Trumper's diary of the 1902 tour of England, extensive though well edited extracts of which form the basis of chapter six. Initially it seemed that Mallett had taken the sickeningly 'too good to be true' hagiographic approach to his subject. Introducing the book he ob- served that 'By every account Trumper was an exceptional human being. He was generous to a fault and a devoted husband, father and son...' and declared later that 'Perhaps only a man of genius cannot be condemned for overlooking the daily humdrum of ensuring that one's clothes are always neat and tidy' (p.3).
