Abstract In this thesis, I compare the short stories, “Boys and Girls” and “The Albanian Virgin”, by Alice Munro, with two films, La Mala Educación and La Piel Que Habito, by Pedro Almodóvar. This comparison analyzes how these authors conceive gender as a doing and a performance, and as culturally constructed rather than biologically determined. My main theoretical framework is Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity as developed in Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity. In my first chapter, I compare “Boys and Girls” with La Mala Educación, and in the second chapter, I compare “The Albanian Virgin” with La Piel Que Habito, to illustrate the multiple ways in which gender is constructed according to Munro and Almodóvar. -

2020 3rd International Conference on Arts, Linguistics, Literature and Humanities (ICALLH 2020) The Analysis of Female Consciousness in Alice Munro's Novels Haixia Zhang Ningxia Normal University, Guyuan, China Keywords: Alice munro, Novel, Female, Female consciousness Abstract: Nobel Prize winner Alice Munro is an evergreen tree in the Canadian literary world. She began to publish works in the late 1960s, and many of her works have gained worldwide reputation during her more than 50 years of writing career. This article draws the outline of the trajectory of women’s lives in Munro’s novels, analyzes the heroine’s living environment in the works and their relationship with men and nature, and explores the significant contributions that Munro’s literary works have made to the development of female consciousness for more than half a century with positive impact. 1. Introduction Alice Munro in Canada has a high reputation in the international society, it is not only depend on her works and success, but also because of her works with highly overall level, therefore, Alice Munro also became one of the 100 most influential contemporary writers. Under her ceaseless effort, she won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2013, became the 13th female winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, and accepted by more and more people in the world, it is not common in the history of the Nobel Prize for literature, which is out of her work, certainly also of her personal effort. [1] Alice Munro’s works should be undoubtedly with a very high artistic value, but for the thought of female consciousness in her works still remains to be further discussed. -

She has taught at a number of Canadian universities and last year was Writer in Residence at the University of Toronto. She won the Governor-General's Award in 1966. Her five books of poems include The Circle Game (1966), The Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970) and Power Politics (1971). She has also written two novels, The Edible Woman (1969), and Surfacing (1972) and a critical book Survival (1972). DOUGLAS BARBOUR lives and works in Edmonton, Alberta. He has four books of postry out, of which the latest is songbook (talon- books, 19731. The others are Land Fall (1971), A Poem as Long as the Highway (1971), and White (1972). S. A. DJWA, Associate Professor, teaches Canadian Literature at Simon Fraser University and is a regular contributor to Cana• dian Literature and the Journal of Canadian Fiction. Professor Djwa has recently completed a book on E. J. Pratt (Copp Clark and McGill-Queen's University Press) and has developed com• puter concordances to fourteen Canadian poets in the prepara• tion of a thematic history of English Canadian poetry. She is now working on an edition of Charles Heavysege's poetry for the University of Toronto Press Literature of Canada Reprint Series. The Masks of D. G. Jones
THE MASKS OF D. G. JONES E.D.Blodgdt "Pour se reconnaître, il faut se traduire" LUBLIC SILENCE surrounding the work of D. G. Jones in Canada is inexorable but not inexplicable. His three books of poetry have emerged and disappeared apparently without complaint against the more stri- dent and ephemeral appeals of the poetry of the past decade in this country. Beside the meteoric flash of such writers as Leonard Cohen and, now, Margaret Atwood, Jones's subtle brilliance seems a pale fire indeed. This is because Jones is a poet who is penetrating with care and delicate concern many of Canada's more troubling aesthetic preoccupations. He is a poet of courage whose surfacing is always deceptive and often misleading in a country where the search for self and heritage can be so exhausting that most poets would prefer to settle for any mode of irony that would both expose the mysterious folly of self-discovery and, also, prevent whatever fulfillment of exploration might be possible. This is the poetry of an imagination that was early formed, and such changes as occur are those of a style deepened only by tragic events.1 It should be remarked, nevertheless, how the centre of Jones's circles of radiation is placed in his first book. As a poet who seems only minimally ready for statement, he enunciated an almost consuming passion in his first poem in Frost On The Sun2 entitled "John Marin". Jones's passion is for art, form and the artist's ambiguous relation to the world present to the eye. -

Throughout her career she has been no stranger to literary awards; she’s taken home the Governor General’s Literary Award (1968, 1978, 1986), the Booker (1980), the Man Booker (2009), and the Giller Prize (1998, 2004), among many others. On October 10, 2013, Canadians were elated to hear that Alice Munro had won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Since the annual award was founded in 1901, it has been awarded to 110 Nobel Laureates, but Munro is the first Canadian—and the 13th woman—ever to win. In order to help publishers ensure they have enough books to meet demand if one of their titles wins an award, BookNet Canada compiles annual literary award studies examining the sales trends in Canada for shortlisted and winning titles. So as soon as the Munro win was announced, the wheels at BookNet started turning. What happens when a Canadian author receives the Nobel Prize in Literature?
