Marksa 15, Omsk, 644024, Russia E-mail: [email protected] GENEALOGIES OF THE SIBERIAN BUKHARANS: THE SHIKHOVS* This paper focuses on the analysis of historical stories associated with an elite family of Siberian Muslims. Particular attention is paid to veri¿ cation of the original Arabic-language sources by comparing them with data obtained from population censuses and ethnographic interviews. The existence of genealogy among the West Siberian Tatars refers to the Bukharans who populated the region intensively in the 16th–19th centuries, developing into an ethnic and class group, and then in the 20th century assimilated among the Siberian Tatars. Several versions of the genealogy of descendants of ‘Awwas-Baqi, who arrived from the city of Sayram in the outskirts of Tara in Siberia, as well as the social status of the main members representing the Shikhov family, have been successfully identi¿ ed. Some members of the Shikhov family migrated to Turkey in the early 20th century and established a separate settlement there, where the family history has been resurrected. The sources used in this study are divided into three categories, allowing us to provide a comprehensive reconstruction of the Shikhov family history. The ¿ rst one includes a written record made in the Persian, Arabic and Turkic languages, relating the history of this family in Siberia and Turkey. This material was collected between 2008 and 2012 in the settlements of the Omsk Region (the Ulenkul village of the Bolsherechye District); in the south of Kazakhstan (the cities of Sayram and Fig. 1.     SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV CHOKAN OF WORKS SELECTED SELECTED WORKS OF CHOKAN VALIKHANOV Pioneering Ethnographer and Historian of the Great Steppe When Chokan Valikhanov died of tuberculosis in 1865, aged only 29, the Russian academician Nikolai Veselovsky described his short life as ‘a meteor flashing across the field of oriental studies’. Set against his remarkable output of official reports, articles and research into the history, culture and ethnology of Central Asia, and more important, his Kazakh people, it remains an entirely appropriate accolade. Born in 1835 into a wealthy and powerful Kazakh clan, he was one of the first ‘people of the steppe’ to receive a Russian education and military training. Soon after graduating from Siberian Cadet Corps at Omsk, he was taking part in reconnaissance missions deep into regions of Central Asia that had seldom been visited by outsiders. His famous mission to Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan, which began in June 1858 and lasted for more than a year, saw him in disguise as a Tashkent mer- chant, risking his life to gather vital information not just on current events, but also on the ethnic make-up, geography, flora and fauna of this unknown region. Journeys to Kuldzha, to Issyk-Kol and to other remote and unmapped places quickly established his reputation, even though he al- ways remained inorodets – an outsider to the Russian establishment. Nonetheless, he was elected to membership of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and spent time in St Petersburg, where he was given a private audience by the Tsar. Wherever he went he made his mark, striking up strong and lasting friendships with the likes of the great Russian explorer and geographer Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tian-Shansky and the writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

Shaidurov a , b , * a Saint-Petersburg Mining University (Mining University), Russian Federation b East European Historical Society, Russian Federation Abstract In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, historians continued to focus much attention on the history of minor ethnic groups, but the state of this body of knowledge is quite varied. Russian historical gypsiology is in its early stages of development. Progress is being slowed by limits of known written archives. So, one of the key objectives is to identify archival documents that will make it possible to set and address research goals. In this paper, we will introduce the options that were put forward for acting on and reacting to the situation of the Gypsies during the Russian Empire, both theorized on as well as put into practice between the 1780s and the 1850s. The situation of the Gypsies here refers to the relations between the Russian Empire, represented by the emperor and his bureaucratic organization, and the Gypsies who found themselves in its territory. The solution for the issues from the Gypsies’ point of view involved their rejection of traditional lifestyles and of integration into economic and social institutions during a particular historical period.

The purpose of the article is to consider the formation of local communities in the Khakass-Minusinsk Territory in the religious migrant world. The authors refer to religious migrants as migrants who left their place of permanent residence in Central Russia and moved to Siberia in the 19th century in an attempt to preserve and spread their non-Orthodox religion. The authors analyse literature, sources from the Siberian archives, scientific articles and monographs on the life of religious migrants in other regions of Siberia and the Far East. The article gives a classification of sects, adopted by pre-revolutionary scholars, examines in detail the representatives of all faiths living in the Khakass-Minusinsk Territory, namely Molokans, Dukhobors, Skoptsy, Catholics and Protestants, especially Lutherans, their number, farming conditions and interaction with local population. The conclusion sets out the reasons why local communities in the studied region did not form: the border location of the region, the indigenous population, which was just beginning to accept Orthodoxy, the fragmentation and small number of sectarians.
