This thesis describes the methodology to model and control the linear actuation system of a ‘clutchless’ automated manual transmission (AMT) in a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, which could improve the drivability and customer acceptability of PHEVs. The ECOCAR 2 architecture adopts the belt coupling between engine and front electric motor, which utilizes the front electric motor to achieve speed matching between the engine and the transmission; so that the AMT in PHEV could realize ‘clutchless’ shifting. The AMT used in this thesis is a modified version of conventional manual transmission which utilizes two linear actuators to move the transmission shifting lever through two cables; therefore, new control method needs to be developed for this system. The overall model is comprised of models that describe the dynamic behavior of the engine, the transmission mechanical components, the hydraulic actuation components, and the vehicle and driveline. A lumped-parameter model, that incorporates fluid film dynamics and a simplified thermal model, is used to describe wet clutch friction. The model of the hydraulic actuation system includes detailed models of the clutch and synchronizer actuation subsystems. A simulation of the dynamic powertrain model is built using AMEsim and MATLAB/Simulink. The powertrain simulator is used to demonstrate how changes in transmission parameters affect the quality of clutch-to-clutch shifts and the overall dynamic response of the powertrain. Based on this model, measurements of clutch pressure and the rotational speeds and estimated accelerations at the input and output sides of the clutch are used in the design of a friction parameter estimation scheme that can be implemented offline using past simulation data or online using current simulation signals. For both offline and online cases, simulation results demonstrate that friction parameters are estimated with reasonable accuracy.

A type of Automatic Mechanical Transmission (AMT) without clutch and synchronizer for pure electric bus is introduced in this paper. The shift process model of this type of AMT is created, and the factors that affect the shift process are analyzed. Based on this shift process model, the shift control strategy is designed. The field vehicle road tests results show that the strategy was able to meet the passenger comfort and vehicle power requirements, and verified the validity and correctness of the control strategy. Introduction Because of zero fuel consumption and emission, battery electric vehicle is thought to be the ideal solution for the energy crisis and global warming [1]. Battery electric vehicles can only have single-stage deceleration device. However, because of large load and frequent starts and stops, pure electric bus with only single-stage deceleration device, is difficult to meet the start-up and high torque requirements. Therefore, buses need the multi-speed transmission to match the vehicle [3]. A battery electric vehicle equipped with 3-speed automatic mechanical transmission (AMT) is present in the study. The AMT has a pneumatic actuator, no clutch and synchronizer.
