Prof. Sudharto, SH, Kampus Tembalang Semarang – 50275 E-mail: [email protected]; E-mail: [email protected]; E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The existence of Sekaten tradition in The Yogyakarta Palace is one form of Javanese cultural heritage that is still preserved by the community until this day. According to the history, the emergence of Sekaten Tradition was not only to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, but also an initiation by Wali Sanga as an effort to spread the religion of Islam. The phenomenon of religious and cultural relations can be seen directly in the Sekaten Tradition held in Yogyakarta and its relation to the Kauman Yogyakarta Community. In fact, Sekaten with mystical traditional colors still exist in Kauman Village, where the majority of their people are identical with Islam and Muhammadiyah. They were accepted Sekaten's presence, even participated in those celebration. So that, the Sekaten tradition which always smells things that are forbidden by Islam, can continue to run well in every year.

Characterise each in terms of its schematic structure and realisational patterns. For starters (pun intended!), here is Eggins’s (2004: 68) schematic structure for recipes: Title^Enticement^Ingredients^Method^Serving Quantity Does it describe these recipes well? Have you got a better schematic structure or GSP? How do you account for variation in the recipe styles. Are there variations in each? Why? Recipe A Pork Satay Source: Far East Café Makes 18 satay skewers; serves 6 Although the concept of satay, cooking meats on skewers, originated in Indonesia, it has been enthusiastically adopted by nearly every South-east Asian cuisine and fashioned to suit the local taste and palate. This satay is a favourite Thai recipe. Other necessary recipes: Red Curry Paste Helpful Hints: Herbs, Chopping 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 ½ teaspoons ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon ground turmeric 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 1 ½ teaspoons Thai fish sauce 2 tablespoons coconut cream 1 ½ lb pork butt or tenderloin, cut into ¾-inch cubes For Sauce: 1 oz tamarind pulp, coarsely chopped ½ cup boiling water 1 tablespoon peanut or corn oil 2 tablespoons red curry paste 1 tablespoon sweet paprika 1 cup coconut milk 1/3 cup ground dry-roasted peanuts or 6 tablespoons chunky peanut butter 2 tablespoons palm sugar or brown sugar 1 tablespoon fish sauce ½ teaspoon salt In a bowl, stir together the brown sugar, coriander, cumin, turmeric, lime juice, fish sauce and coconut cream to form a marinade.

U n p a c k in g a N a t io n a l H e r o in e : T w o K a r t in is a n d T h e ir P e o p l e Danilyn Rutherford As Head of the Country, I deeply regret that among the people there are still those who doubt the heroism of Kartini___Haven't we already unanimously decided that Kartini is a National Heroine?1 On August 11,1986, as Dr. Frederick George Peter Jaquet cycled from Den Haag to his office in Leiden, no one would have guessed that he was transporting an Indonesian nation al treasure. The wooden box strapped to his bicycle looked perfectly ordinary. When he arrived at the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, the scholar opened the box to view the Institute's long-awaited prize: a cache of postcards, photographs, and scraps of letters sent by Raden Adjeng Kartini and her sisters to the family of Mr. J. H. Abendanon, the colonial official who was both her patron and publisher. From this box so grudgingly surrendered by Abendanon's family spilled new light on the life of this Javanese nobleman's daughter, new clues to the mystery of her struggle. Dr. Jaquet's discovery, glowingly reported in the Indonesian press, was but the latest episode in a long series of attempts to liberate Kartini from the boxes which have contained her. For decades, Indonesian and foreign scholars alike have sought to penetrate the veils obscuring the real Kartini in order to reach the core of a personality repressed by colonial officials, Dutch artists and intellectuals, the strictures of tradition, and the tragedy of her untimely death.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer (1953) [Reprinted from A . Teeuw, Modern Indonesian Literature (The Hague: Nijhoff, 1967)] PERBURUAN 1950 AND KELUARCA GERILYA 1950* Pramoedya Ananta Toer Translated by Benedict Anderson I've been asked: what is the creative process for me, as a writer? This is not an easy question to answer. Whether "formulated" or not, the creative process is always a very private and personal experience. Each writer will have his own ex perience, again whether "formulated" or not. I've been asked to detail the creative process which produced the novels Perburuan [The Fugitive] and Keluarga Gerilya [Th e Guerrilla Family]. Very well. I'll answer— even though there's no real need for other people to know what goes on in my private kitchen. My willingness to respond in this instance is based purely on the public's right to some comparisons . to limit undue onesidedness. 1948. I was 23 at the time— a pemuda who believed wholeheartedly in the nobil ity of work— any kind of work— who felt he could accomplish^ anything, and who dreamed of scraping the sky and scooping the belly of the earth: a pemuda who had only just begun his career as a writer, publicist, and reporter. As it turned out, all of this was nullified by thick prison walls. My life was regulated by a schedule determined by authorities propped up by rifles and bayonets. Forced labor outside the jail, four days a week, and getting cents for a full day's labor. Not a glimmer of light yet as to when the war of words and arms between the Re public and the Dutch would end.

However,in fact, the community in the night market is a society with an economic level and low purchasing power. For this reason, researchers are interested in studying the local perspective of night market community tourism communication in Jakarta. This study uses a case study method, by collecting data through interviews and observations in twonight market locations, namely at Puri Walk market, and CNI night market, in West Jakarta. The results showed that the local community around the night market, which was dominated by Betawi ethnic, realized that the night market has the potential as a tourist destination. With this awareness, if previously Betawi ethnic groups who felt as indigenous people had difficulty accepting other groups of people into their territory, with the night market they could work together to create a conducive atmosphere so that night market operations could be orderly and safe. This research is expected to encourage the government to organize the night market, and enter the night market in tourism promotion programs. 1 INTRODUCTION Night market or in the Indonesian language is country. The night market in various regions in referred to as “Pasar Malam”, can be found in Indonesia such as Jakarta is still limited to being various countries including in Indonesia.

The Kali Lusi in the Dry Season BLORA REVISITED Barbara Hatley In December 1949, as the Dutch occupying forces left Indonesia and Indonesians finally took control of their own state, the writer Pramudya Ananta Tur was re leased from prison after two and a half years' detention by the Dutch authorities as an underground agent for the Indonesian Republic. Six months later he made a trip to his birthplace, the small town of Blora, near the border of Central and East Java, to visit his dying father. The visit affected Pramudya deeply, inspir ing both his factual account of the circumstances of his father's death given in Bukan Pasar Mai am (It's No Night Market) and the collection of childhood reminis cences and other tales of Blora life of Cerita dari Blora (Stories of Blora). What he found there was a natural and human landscape both familiar and greatly changed from the one he had known; in these stories the physical features of the town take on symbolic force as images of permanence and change in the lives of its people. The isolation of Blora, its harsh dry climate, and barren clay soil are constant, like the poverty and parochialism of those who live there--at one point Pramudya sug gests facetiously that it may be the scant muddy well water in which they must bathe, so different from the clean piped water of big cities, which makes Blora people the way they a re.1 But that same natural scene also contains many sugges tions of passing time, of a sense of human powerlessness in the face of relentless change.

  • Cross-Cultural Encounters and the Making of Early Kroncong History
CHAPTER ELEVEN ‘BARAT KETEMU TIMUr’: Cross-CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS AND THE MAKING OF EARLY KRONCONG HISTORY Lutgard Mutsaers Introduction Regarding the notion of cross-cultural encounters impacting on the course of music, kroncong is a case in point.1 It symbolizes the intimate rela- tionship between Indonesia and the Netherlands unlike any other music. Although its roots were neither Dutch nor Indonesian, it was on Indone- sian soil under the Dutch crown that kroncong compromised a middle ground between European and Asian aesthetics and social practices. To the present day kroncong holds its own cultural space in both Indonesia and the Netherlands as evergreen signature sound of East-West relations. The unique bond was forged around the turn of the twentieth century, well before commercial electrical recording, radio and sound film would turn kroncong into the national popular music of Indonesia on its road to Independence, and into a special favourite and a home-grown genre in the Netherlands on its road to geographical miniaturisation. The moment kroncong caught the attention of the colonial press, the music was an as yet unnamed, unwritten foreign folk tradition alive in a rural niche of some notoriety in the vicinity of Batavia (Manusama 1919). Already familiar with, in particular, lower class Indo-Europeans in the capital city, the music consisted of a handful of melodies with more or less fixed lyrics in an archaic language, accompanied by guitar-like instru- ments. Before long, and once labelled as kroncong, the budding urban 1 This chapter is an original extract of a book by the same author, Roep der Verten.
