WELCOME TO YOUR NEW HOME

2017-2018 #HelloManchester WELCOME TO YOUR NEW HOME

A very warm welcome to the Halls of Residences. I hope that you will find our halls an excellent place in which to live.

Our vision is to provide the best residential experience where everyone is continually striving to improve the standards and services we provide. As the Director of Residences it is my responsibility to lead the provision of services and facilities within the Residences operation and support the management teams who are responsible for delivering those services.

Just over 450 people work within the Residences. During your time in halls you will meet a number of people whose role it is to make sure life runs smoothly so that you can concentrate on making a positive commitment to your studies as well as enjoying your experience as a student here at The University of Manchester. Within your Hall of Residence this will include the ResLife team, the Domestic Services team, the Accommodation Administration team and if in catered halls, the Food in Residence team. Please feel free to ask their advice because they are here for your benefit. All that we ask is that you are polite to them and respectful to each other. Everyone working in Residences places great importance on customer service and this includes a commitment to ensuring our services are the best. We accept that sometimes things go wrong and we welcome feedback on our services, facilities and staff and I would like to encourage you to contact us if there is anything you would like us to know about, whether it is complimentary or otherwise.

This Residences Guide aims to provide you with a few guidelines to communal living and some information on how things work and where to get advice.

I hope that you enjoy your time in hall and I wish you every success in your studies.

6 FIRE SAFETY

At the University of Manchester the safety and wellbeing of our students is of great

importance. When living in our Halls of Residence there are a number of rules and regulations

that you must adhere to, both to help prevent fires and to ensure your safety in the event of

a fire in the building.

• Most fires start with people cooking - this danger is increased drastically after drinking a lot

of alcohol. Do not use any form of cooking equipment in your bedroom. • Every 3 days someone dies from a fire started by a cigarette • Broken electronics start about 7,000 fires a year

• The non-exhaustive list below shows just some of the itemsbanned in Halls of Residence:

Candles Deep fat fryers Incense burners Fireworks Halogen lamps Cigarettes / e-cigarettes Portable heaters Shisha Pipes

7 FIRE SAFETY

Fire Equipment

• Fire equipment, such as fire alarms/extinguishers and smoke/heat detectors are

there for your safety. They should never be activated unnecessarily and must never

be covered.

• Tampering with fire safety equipment will result in disciplinary action which can

include a fine, community service or suspension from your degree programme.

Fire Evacuation • When a fire alarm sounds YOU MUST EVACUATE - make sure evacuation routes are kept clear at all times.

• Do not stop to collect belongings - you may be outside for a while so grab appropriate footwear and clothing.

• Re-entering the building could be fatal and should only be done when instructed to do so by university security staff or the Fire Service.

8 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Every resident should ensure that the appliances which they bring with them, or purchased during their stay, are in good condition and are fitted with the correct fuse. Electrical goods purchased outside of the UK MUST be suitable for use in the UK - ideally fitted with a standard 3 pin plug top to BS1363.

If you suspect you have a faulty appliance in your flat, make sure it is switched off and report it immediately on the Building Maintenance System: manchester.ac.uk/accommodation/bm

Do not leave any appliances unattended when in use

• All appliances must be switched off when cleaned and cleaned regularly, keeping them free of fat and grease as this poses a fire risk.

• You may also incur charges for any damage resulting from misuse.

9 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Cookers:

• Contains an oven, grill and electric rings. • When using the grill ensure the grill door is open and always use the grill handle • Do not touch items in the oven without using gloves.

Microwaves:

• Only use cookware that is safe to use in the microwave, these will usually be labelled. • Never use anything metallic in the microwave, this could damage the appliance and is a safety hazard.

Toasters:

• Only sliced bread should be put inside the toaster and the crumb tray must be emptied regularly. • If bread becomes stuck, unplug the toaster, do not put anything inside the toaster and report the problem to a member of the domestic staff.

Kettles:

• Kettles should not be placed on top of the cooker or microwave. • Do not exceed the maximum water level indicated and take care when pouring boiling water. • Take care not to overload the plug sockets with too many appliances, as this has been known to cause electrical trips in Halls of Residence.

10 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Refrigerators and Freezers:

• Ensure that refrigerators and freezers are switched on at all times and the doors closed. • To reduce the risk of food poisoning only put cool or cold items into the fridge/freezers, and make sure that out-of-date food is regularly disposed of. • We recommend that you clean the fridge/freezer at least once per term - to do so it must be emptied and turned off.

Irons:

• Do not fill the water beyond the maximum level indicated if using the steam function, and do not fill the iron when it is switched on. • The iron should only be face down when ironing, otherwise it should be kept upright on a heat resistant surface. • Always use the iron on the appropriate setting for the material you are ironing and do not use it if the wire becomes frayed.

Vacuum Cleaners:

• These are provided and should be used regularly to clean your accommodation, but shouldn’t be used to clean liquid spills. • When in use ensure the cable isn’t a trip hazard and take care not to overload plug sockets with appliances, as this may cause an electrical trip.

11 BUILDING MAINTENANCE

All repairs and building maintenance issues should be reported using the Halls of Residence Network via manchester.ac.uk/accommodation/bm

• By reporting the problem you are requesting that it be fixed and thus you give consent to The University of Manchester staff or its agents to enter your room to fix the problem. • Requests entered on this system will not be addressed on weekends, bank holidays and University closed days - Emergencies should be reported to the ResLife team. • Access to your room without permission may be obtained to carry out essential repairs, if repairs cannot be resolved in the room where the fault occurred.

When you arrive you will be issued with an Inventory Form to complete and return to your Hall Administration Office within 24 hours of arriving.

It is important to record anything missing/damaged or in need of repair on the Building Maintenance web page.

Please contact your Hall Administration Team if you do not receive the Inventory form.

12 RESLIFE STAYING SAFE

FACT - 1 in 3 burglaries occur due to an open or unlocked window or door...Lock up!

Top 10 Tips for Staying Safe

1. Make sure to lock your door and windows when you leave your room and hall. 2. Be aware of your surroundings and keep valuables out of sight. 3. Stick to well-lit streets and avoid shortcuts such as alleyways and car parks. 4. Walk and travel in groups, especially at night. Arrange a place to meet if anyone gets lost. 5. RESLIFE 11 STUDENT LIVING

Living in halls is a great way to meet other students and build friendships. It’s important to take advantage of this opportunity by connecting with your flatmates and other residents through the many different social events that are available to you. Top 10 tips for Student Living: 1. Everyone feels nervous and overwhelmed at some point, don’t worry about it! 2. Decorate your room to make it feel more homely - and enter our competition! 3. Keep in touch with your friends and family at home - let them know you’re okay. 4. Although it can seem daunting in the first few days - make the most of the welcome weekend and get involved in your halls events and activities. 5. No-one wants to hear you screaming along to Taylor Swift or your bass speakers thumping at midnight - so keep the noise down! 6. Try out new things - join a few clubs and societies to meet lots of like-minded people. 7. Cook dinner with others - it’s cheaper and easier than always doing it by yourself. 8. Taking a break or getting away from uni can be nice but make sure you don’t miss out on what’s going on. 9. Let your flatmates know if you’re planning on being away and when you’re supposed to be back. 10. Don’t put all your eggs in one friendship basket, it’s good to have more than one group of friends! Swap contact details! Use your Halls Official Facebook groups to meet other residents in your hall. To find out more, visit manchesterstudentsunion.com

10 RESLIFE GETTING AROUND

Bicycle

There are brand new cycleways all around Manchester, as well as stands and shelters, making it easier than ever to use a bike. The University is committed to bike safety and offers a ‘D’ lock for just £15 (RRP £45) as part of their cycle safety scheme.

Bus

Student bus pass deals are available from Stagecoach and First Buses. The “Student Shuttle Bus” runs every night and can take you home safely from the Learning Commons for a max of £4. There is also a free bus, the 147, running from the North campus to the Main campus.

Taxi

The university recommends using Street Cars. You can upload your card on the app if you don’t have cash, and you can also track your car and see your driver’s info. See the “Safe Taxi Scheme” online for more info. For more details visit Getting Around on our website.

RESLIFE 9 RECYCLING AND SUSTAINABILITY

Recycling in Halls

You are responsible for taking out your general waste and recycling in halls. Flats and kitchens that do not take out waste or recycling may risk being charged. You may want to create a rota to organise who will take out the general waste and recycling.

How do I Recycle?

To help you recycle each kitchen has 2 coloured recycling bags. In addition to this you will have a recycling bag in your room. When the bags are full please empty their contents into the relevant bins outside your hall and return the empty bags to your kitchen.

Last year in halls we recycled over 169 tonnes! This is the equivalent weight of a 3 carriage train, similar to the trains travelling between Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds.

So please recycle as much as possible so that we can beat last year’s results.

8 RESLIFE GOOD NEIGHBOURS

• Students have a major impact on the communities in which they live, and as a student you have an opportunity to make a real and positive contribution to Manchester.

• This is your home for a significant part of the year and we hope that you enjoy your time living in Manchester.

• This local area is home to a diverse range of residents so it is essential to respect the different ways in which they live.

We’ve launched a programme Halls 2 Home and created a Good Neighbours team to support you through your transition from university halls to living independently in the private rented sector.

This may seem like a long way off at the moment, but it’s never too early to start preparing for life out in the wider community. Throughout the year Manchester Student Homes will be working with ResLife to deliver a series of Halls 2 Home campaigns and events on the following 6 thematic policy areas:

• Student Safety • Student Contributions to in the Community • Environmental issues • Alcohol, Drugs & Legal Highs • Student Housing • Noise and Anti-Social Behaviour

• When living in university accommodation, you have access to more than 40 hours of FREE sports and activities every week!

• The Sporticipate programme provides sessions at venues close to your halls (e.g. Armitage and Sugden Centre) so you can play as often as you like.

• Sign up for SPORTICIPATE: sport.manchester.ac.uk/sport/sporticipate

RESLIFE 5 LIFE IN HALLS

RA and JCR Committees

• Every University run Halls of Residence has a Residents’ Association (RA) or Junior Common Room (JCR).

• All students who live in the hall are members of this group and the membership fee is included in their rent.

• These fees go into a fund which is used to run socials, trips, events and sporting activities for all residents throughout the year.

• A committee of students is elected to put on a range of events, sports and services for students living in their hall, and to represent their fellow residents.

• The Students’ Union supports the committees in achieving their goals and making Halls of Residence great places to live while you are in Manchester. Jack Lofthouse - Halls Engagement Coordinator
