When living in our Halls of Residence there are a number of rules and regulations that you must adhere to, both to help prevent fires and to ensure your safety in the event of a fire in the building. • Most fires start with people cooking - this danger is increased drastically after drinking a lot of alcohol. Do not use any form of cooking equipment in your bedroom. • Every 3 days someone dies from a fire started by a cigarette • Broken electronics start about 7,000 fires a year • The non-exhaustive list below shows just some of the itemsbanned in Halls of Residence: Candles Deep fat fryers Incense burners Fireworks Halogen lamps Cigarettes / e-cigarettes Portable heaters Shisha Pipes 7 FIRE SAFETY Fire Equipment • Fire equipment, such as fire alarms/extinguishers and smoke/heat detectors are there for your safety. They should never be activated unnecessarily and must never be covered. • Tampering with fire safety equipment will result in disciplinary action which can include a fine, community service or suspension from your degree programme. Fire Evacuation • When a fire alarm sounds YOU MUST EVACUATE - make sure evacuation routes are kept clear at all times. • Do not stop to collect belongings - you may be outside for a while so grab appropriate footwear and clothing. • Re-entering the building could be fatal and should only be done when instructed to do so by university security staff or the Fire Service. 8 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS Every resident should ensure that the appliances which they bring with them, or purchased during their stay, are in good condition and are fitted with the correct fuse. Electrical goods purchased outside of the UK MUST be suitable for use in the UK - ideally fitted with a standard 3 pin plug top to BS1363. If you suspect you have a faulty appliance in your flat, make sure it is switched off and report it immediately on the Building Maintenance System: manchester.ac.uk/accommodation/bm Do not leave any appliances unattended when in use • All appliances must be switched off when cleaned and cleaned regularly, keeping them free of fat and grease as this poses a fire risk. • You may also incur charges for any damage resulting from misuse. 9 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS Cookers: • Contains an oven, grill and electric rings. • When using the grill ensure the grill door is open and always use the grill handle • Do not touch items in the oven without using gloves. Microwaves: • Only use cookware that is safe to use in the microwave, these will usually be labelled. • Never use anything metallic in the microwave, this could damage the appliance and is a safety hazard. Toasters: • Only sliced bread should be put inside the toaster and the crumb tray must be emptied regularly. • If bread becomes stuck, unplug the toaster, do not put anything inside the toaster and report the problem to a member of the domestic staff. Kettles: • Kettles should not be placed on top of the cooker or microwave. • Do not exceed the maximum water level indicated and take care when pouring boiling water. • Take care not to overload the plug sockets with too many appliances, as this has been known to cause electrical trips in Halls of Residence. 10 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS Refrigerators and Freezers: • Ensure that refrigerators and freezers are switched on at all times and the doors closed. • To reduce the risk of food poisoning only put cool or cold items into the fridge/freezers, and make sure that out-of-date food is regularly disposed of. • We recommend that you clean the fridge/freezer at least once per term - to do so it must be emptied and turned off. Irons: • Do not fill the water beyond the maximum level indicated if using the steam function, and do not fill the iron when it is switched on. • The iron should only be face down when ironing, otherwise it should be kept upright on a heat resistant surface. • Always use the iron on the appropriate setting for the material you are ironing and do not use it if the wire becomes frayed. Vacuum Cleaners: • These are provided and should be used regularly to clean your accommodation, but shouldn’t be used to clean liquid spills. • When in use ensure the cable isn’t a trip hazard and take care not to overload plug sockets with appliances, as this may cause an electrical trip. 11 BUILDING MAINTENANCE All repairs and building maintenance issues should be reported using the Halls of Residence Network via manchester.ac.uk/accommodation/bm • By reporting the problem you are requesting that it be fixed and thus you give consent to The University of Manchester staff or its agents to enter your room to fix the problem. • Requests entered on this system will not be addressed on weekends, bank holidays and University closed days - Emergencies should be reported to the ResLife team. • Access to your room without permission may be obtained to carry out essential repairs, if repairs cannot be resolved in the room where the fault occurred. When you arrive you will be issued with an Inventory Form to complete and return to your Hall Administration Office within 24 hours of arriving.

  • A History of the University of Manchester Since 1951
Pullan2004jkt 10/2/03 2:43 PM Page 1 University ofManchester A history ofthe HIS IS THE SECOND VOLUME of a history of the University of Manchester since 1951. It spans seventeen critical years in T which public funding was contracting, student grants were diminishing, instructions from the government and the University Grants Commission were multiplying, and universities feared for their reputation in the public eye. It provides a frank account of the University’s struggle against these difficulties and its efforts to prove the value of university education to society and the economy. This volume describes and analyses not only academic developments and changes in the structure and finances of the University, but the opinions and social and political lives of the staff and their students as well. It also examines the controversies of the 1970s and 1980s over such issues as feminism, free speech, ethical investment, academic freedom and the quest for efficient management. The author draws on official records, staff and student newspapers, and personal interviews with people who experienced the University in very 1973–90 different ways. With its wide range of academic interests and large student population, the University of Manchester was the biggest unitary university in the country, and its history illustrates the problems faced by almost all British universities. The book will appeal to past and present staff of the University and its alumni, and to anyone interested in the debates surrounding higher with MicheleAbendstern Brian Pullan education in the late twentieth century. A history of the University of Manchester 1951–73 by Brian Pullan with Michele Abendstern is also available from Manchester University Press.
