I hope that you will find our halls an excellent place in which to live. Our vision is to provide the best residential experience where everyone is continually striving to improve the standards and services we provide. As the Director of Residences it is my responsibility to lead the provision of services and facilities within the Residences operation and support the management teams who are responsible for delivering those services. Just over 450 people work within the Residences. During your time in halls you will meet a number of people whose role it is to make sure life runs smoothly so that you can concentrate on making a positive commitment to your studies as well as enjoying your experience as a student here at The University of Manchester. Within your Hall of Residence this will include the ResLife team, the Domestic Services team, the Accommodation Administration team and if in catered halls, the Food in Residence team. Please feel free to ask their advice because they are here for your benefit. All that we ask is that you are polite to them and respectful to each other. Everyone working in Residences places great importance on customer service and this includes a commitment to ensuring our services are the best. We accept that sometimes things go wrong and we welcome feedback on our services, facilities and staff and I would like to encourage you to contact us if there is anything you would like us to know about, whether it is complimentary or otherwise. When living in our Halls of Residence there are a number of rules and regulations that you must adhere to, both to help prevent fires and to ensure your safety in the event of a fire in the building. • Most fires start with people cooking - this danger is increased drastically after drinking a lot of alcohol. Do not use any form of cooking equipment in your bedroom. • Every 3 days someone dies from a fire started by a cigarette • Broken electronics start about 7,000 fires a year • The non-exhaustive list below shows just some of the itemsbanned in Halls of Residence: Candles Deep fat fryers Incense burners Fireworks Halogen lamps Cigarettes / e-cigarettes Portable heaters Shisha Pipes 7 FIRE SAFETY Fire Equipment • Fire equipment, such as fire alarms/extinguishers and smoke/heat detectors are there for your safety. They should never be activated unnecessarily and must never be covered. • Tampering with fire safety equipment will result in disciplinary action which can include a fine, community service or suspension from your degree programme. Fire Evacuation • When a fire alarm sounds YOU MUST EVACUATE - make sure evacuation routes are kept clear at all times. • Do not stop to collect belongings - you may be outside for a while so grab appropriate footwear and clothing. • Re-entering the building could be fatal and should only be done when instructed to do so by university security staff or the Fire Service. 8 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS Every resident should ensure that the appliances which they bring with them, or purchased during their stay, are in good condition and are fitted with the correct fuse. Electrical goods purchased outside of the UK MUST be suitable for use in the UK - ideally fitted with a standard 3 pin plug top to BS1363. If you suspect you have a faulty appliance in your flat, make sure it is switched off and report it immediately on the Building Maintenance System: manchester.ac.uk/accommodation/bm Do not leave any appliances unattended when in use • All appliances must be switched off when cleaned and cleaned regularly, keeping them free of fat and grease as this poses a fire risk. • You may also incur charges for any damage resulting from misuse. 9 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS Cookers: • Contains an oven, grill and electric rings. • When using the grill ensure the grill door is open and always use the grill handle • Do not touch items in the oven without using gloves. Microwaves: • Only use cookware that is safe to use in the microwave, these will usually be labelled. • Never use anything metallic in the microwave, this could damage the appliance and is a safety hazard. Toasters: • Only sliced bread should be put inside the toaster and the crumb tray must be emptied regularly. • If bread becomes stuck, unplug the toaster, do not put anything inside the toaster and report the problem to a member of the domestic staff. Kettles: • Kettles should not be placed on top of the cooker or microwave. • Do not exceed the maximum water level indicated and take care when pouring boiling water. • Take care not to overload the plug sockets with too many appliances, as this has been known to cause electrical trips in Halls of Residence. 10 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE INSTRUCTIONS Refrigerators and Freezers: • Ensure that refrigerators and freezers are switched on at all times and the doors closed. • To reduce the risk of food poisoning only put cool or cold items into the fridge/freezers, and make sure that out-of-date food is regularly disposed of. • We recommend that you clean the fridge/freezer at least once per term - to do so it must be emptied and turned off. Irons: • Do not fill the water beyond the maximum level indicated if using the steam function, and do not fill the iron when it is switched on. • The iron should only be face down when ironing, otherwise it should be kept upright on a heat resistant surface. • Always use the iron on the appropriate setting for the material you are ironing and do not use it if the wire becomes frayed. Vacuum Cleaners: • These are provided and should be used regularly to clean your accommodation, but shouldn’t be used to clean liquid spills. • When in use ensure the cable isn’t a trip hazard and take care not to overload plug sockets with appliances, as this may cause an electrical trip. 11 BUILDING MAINTENANCE All repairs and building maintenance issues should be reported using the Halls of Residence Network via manchester.ac.uk/accommodation/bm • By reporting the problem you are requesting that it be fixed and thus you give consent to The University of Manchester staff or its agents to enter your room to fix the problem. • Requests entered on this system will not be addressed on weekends, bank holidays and University closed days - Emergencies should be reported to the ResLife team. • Access to your room without permission may be obtained to carry out essential repairs, if repairs cannot be resolved in the room where the fault occurred. When you arrive you will be issued with an Inventory Form to complete and return to your Hall Administration Office within 24 hours of arriving.
