Forget Santa - Meet the Christkind!
HAVE GERMAN WILL TRAVEL WEIHNACHTEN ,,Bei uns ist immer was los!" CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION CUSTOMS/ WEIHNACHTSFEIERBRA.UCHE bringer of gifts: der Gabenbringer, die Gabenbringer Christ child: das Christkind Forget Santa - Meet the Christkind! Today I'm going to tell you about a German Christmas tradition that I remember very fondly from my childhood. It's not something celebrated in the UK, but it's popular in Germany, and I think it makes Christmas really magical for children (even moreso than Santa does). I'm going to tell you about the Christkind. The Christkind (sometimes known affectionately as Christkindl} is a traditional giver of gifts at Christmas time, mainly in European countries including Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Liechtenstein, Hungary, Slovakia and Switzerland. The word Christkind translates to 'Christ Child'. The Christkind is depicted as an angelic figure with blond hair and wings. Vintage Christmas postcards like these ones capture the magical feeling of the Christkind perfectly: What does the Christkind do? This is all very, very exciting if you are a child! The Christkind brings children their Geschenke (presents} on December 24th and leaves them underneath the Weihnachtsbaum (Christmas tree). Parents tell their children that the Christkind won't come if they try to spot him. He is not meant to be seen! Sometimes parents will secretly ring a bell to announce the arrival or departure of the Christkind, after which the children go running to find their presents. I remember my parents doing this when I was very young: On Christmas eve one year, our doorbell rang, and I went running to open it in hope of seeing the Christkind, but when I opened it, all I found were a collection of presents on the doormat! Because my parents were in the living room at the time, I was convinced it was the Christkind who had brought us the presents. -

History of Christmas R S 373 (43340) Semester: Fall 2018 Instructor: Brent Landau Description: This course will explore the evolution of the modern Christmas holiday, beginning with the birth stories of Jesus in the New Testament and concluding with the supposed “War on Christmas” that some recent commentators believe has sought to remove the Christian religious roots of the holiday. Topics to be addressed include: non-Christian antecedents to and influences on Christmas; canonical and apocryphal stories about Jesus’ birth and childhood; the designation of Christmas on Dec. 25th in the fourth century; the raucous and subversive character of early-modern Christmas celebrations and their suppression by the Puritans; the fixing of the current American version of Christmas in the nineteenth and twentieth century; the contemporary debate over the constitutionality of religious Christmas displays in public places. Important UT Policies and Procedures Information: UGS Flags: This course carries the Ethics and Leadership Flag. Santa Claus (also known as Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Santy or simply Santa) is a folklore figure in various cultures who distributes gifts to children, normally on Christmas Eve . Each name is a variation of Saint Nicholas , but refers to Santa Claus. In today's North American, European and worldwide celebration of Christmas, people young and old simply refer to the hero of the season as Santa , or Santa Claus. (Wikipedia) Conventionally, Santa Claus is portrayed as a kindly, round-bellied, merry, bespectacled white man in a red coat trimmed with white fur, with a long white beard . On Christmas Eve, he rides in his sleigh pulled by flying reindeer from house to house to give presents to children. To enter the house, Santa Claus comes down the chimney and exits through the fireplace . During the rest of the year he lives together with his wife Mrs. Claus and his elves manufacturing toys . Some modern depictions of Santa (often in advertising and popular entertainment) will show the elves and Santa's workshop as more of a processing and distribution facility, ordering and receiving the toys from various toy manufacturers from across the world. -

Video Script
VIDEO SCRIPT It is the beginning of December. The night has taken hours of time from the day, and the afternoon has become significantly shorter. Not to worry though, because the opposite process will soon start: the day will gain hours of sunlight, and night-time will cut short. This was a well-known fact by men and women of times past. Shepherding was their occupation. As modern calendar systems had not yet been developed, the Moon, Nature and the Sun would be their reference points. They noticed that the passing of time followed a cyclic pattern. Days became longer for some time, and all of a sudden, the lengthening process would come to a stop around 21 and 24 June in nowadays calendars. Later the direction of the Sun is reversed and days began to shorten until the Sun reaches its furthest point again, around 21 and 24 December in our calendar. Those times of the year are known as the summer and the winter solstices. The two solstices or eguzkiaren itzul-mugak, as Barandiaran referred to them (which literal translation is the Sun’s turning points), acquired great significance for those men and women. The solstices determined the start and the end of their years, and their major celebrations and events arisen around those dates. This unit deals with the winter solstice celebrations. We shall try to study Christmas time holidays and customs observed in Euskal Herria. Before we do that, though, let us remember the dual nature of the festivities celebrated at this time of the year: on the one hand, these are days, Eguberriak (literally New days) meant to rejoice precisely for the time of the year, and on the other, the Christmas season, Gabonak (Merry nights commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ) has been filled with a Christian spirit acquired through the centuries.
