This paper is dedicated to the memory of John Griffith of Jesus College, Oxford. INTRODUCTION Anegada island is the northernmost member of the Lesser Antillean arc, situated at 18" 43'N and 64" 19'W. Its nearest neighbors are Anguilla, about 80 statute miles (127 km} across the Anegada Passage to the east-southeast and Virgin Gorda, about 13 miles (21 km} due south. Whereas the Virgin Islands are generally mountainous, Anegada reaches perhaps 18 ' above mean sea level and much of the island is considerably lower (D 'Arcy, 1975}. It is about 10 miles (16 km} in length, about 15 square miles (39 km'} in area, oriented along the east-west axis and is just over 2 miles (3.5 km} across the widest point (Fig. 16}. From the south coast and into the Anegada Passage to the southeast extends the Horseshoe Reef, long a hazard to navigation. -

In this study, a total of 395 butterflies were collected, of which 327 were identified to species or morphospecies. 263 specimens were collected by the traps and 64 were collected using entomological hand-nets; 43 genera and 60 species were collected and identified. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences were used to estimate demographic histories of populations of the buckeye butterfly Junonia genoveva (Cramer) from Costa Rica and Mexico. Previous studies have revealed significant structure between populations of J. genoveva from coastal regions of northwestern Mexico, which utilize black mangrove Avicennia germinans (Acanthaceae) as a larval host plant, and inland populations from Costa Rica that feed on different hosts in the families Acanthaceae and Verbenaceae. The Mexico population of J. genoveva reported on here is located near the Northern limit of black mangrove habitat on the Pacific coast of North America and is hypothesized to have been established by northward migrations and colonization from southern source populations. The mismatch distribution, Bayesian skyline analyses, and maximum likelihood analyses carried out in FLUCTUATE were used to estimate changes in female effective population size (Nef) over time in the two populations. -

Nucleotide sequence data from a segment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, known as the barcode segment, were used to examine phylogenetic relationships and systematics of buckeye butterflies (Nymphalidae: Nymphalinae: Junonia ) from the New World, with emphasis on taxa from western North America . Three nominal species have been recognized for North America, J. evarete (Cramer), J. genoveva (Cramer), and J. coenia Hübner, with additional species recently pro - posed for the West Indies and northern South America . The distinctive Andean buckeye, J. vestina C. Felder & R. Felder, along with J. evarete and J. genoveva , are also components of the South American fauna . With the exception of J. vestina , butterflies comprising the New World Junonia have had a confused taxonomic history, and species assignments are often problematic . Our results show that the barcode segment resolves the two major clades of New World Junonia , referred to here as clades A and B, with similar high sup - port seen in an earlier phylogenetic study using both mitochondrial and nuclear genes . -

(NEW Dec. 3, PAPILIO SERIES) ~19 2008 CORRECTIONS/REVIEWS OF 58 NORTH AMERICAN BUTTERFLY BOOKS Dr. James A. Scott, 60 Estes Street, Lakewood, Colorado 80226-1254 Abstract. Corrections are given for 58 North American butterfly books. Most of these books are recent. Misidentified figures mostly of adults, erroneous hostplants, and other mistakes are corrected in each book. Suggestions are made to improve future butterfly books. Identifications of figured specimens in Holland's 1931 & 1898 Butterfly Book & 1915 Butterfly Guide are corrected, and their type status clarified, and corrections are made to F. M. Brown's series of papers on Edwards; types (many figured by Holland), because some of Holland's 75 lectotype designations override lectotype specimens that were designated later, and several dozen Holland lectotype designations are added to the J. Pelham Catalogue. Type locality designations are corrected/defined here (some made by Brown, most by others), for numerous names: aenus, artonis, balder, bremnerii, brettoides, brucei (Oeneis), caespitatis, cahmus, callina, carus, colon, colorado, coolinensis, comus, conquista, dacotah, damei, dumeti, edwardsii (Oarisma), elada, epixanthe, eunus, fulvia, furcae, garita, hermodur, kootenai, lagus, mejicanus, mormo, mormonia, nilus, nympha, oreas, oslari, philetas, phylace, pratincola, rhena, saga, scudderi, simius, taxiles, uhleri. Five first reviser actions are made (albihalos=austinorum, davenporti=pratti, latalinea=subaridum, maritima=texana [Cercyonis], ricei=calneva). The name c-argenteum is designated nomen oblitum, faunus a nomen protectum. Three taxa are demonstrated to be invalid nomina nuda (blackmorei, sulfuris, svilhae), and another nomen nudum ( damei) is added to catalogues as a "schizophrenic taxon" in order to preserve stability. Problems caused by old scientific names and the time wasted on them are discussed. -

Box 117800, Gainesville, Florida 32611-7800, USA ABSTRACT: A synopsis of data for 41 butterfly species collected and observed at the United States Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during January 2012 is presented along with observations on habitat, nectar plants, and natural history. Data are also provided for specimens in the collections of the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera which were collected on the base prior to our studies, as well as those collected in areas surrounding the base in 1994-95. Larval hosts and adult nectar sources are summarized for the 51 species recorded from the base since 1962. Vegetative habitats, climate, and geomorphology of the area are described and biogeographic patterns discussed. Distribution summaries are given with special reference to endemic and invasive species. Miller Bishop Museum, Box 19000-A, Honolulu, Hawaii 96817 USA INTRODUCTION Guana is a small island on the north side of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands (18°28'N, 64°35'W) (Fig. 1). While it is small, only 297 ha, and the maximum elevation is 266m, it bears a relatively rich vegetation and has sustained less damage by feral animals and man than have many adjacent islands. It has most of the floristic associations of the larger Virgin Islands, with the notable exception of the "aridulate rain forest" of Tortola (D 'Arcy, 1967). Despite its small size, Guana has a great proportion of the Virgin Islands butterfly fauna. Riley (1975) fists 41 species living on all the islands together. We have recorded 31 on Guana. Considering its size this is a relatively rich fauna. Within the British Virgin Islands, Anegada (3872 ha) has 24 species (Smith et al., 1991) and Tortola (5444 ha) has 31 species (J. Miller and L. Miller, in prep.). Among larger islands in the region, Mona (6200 ha) has 46 species (Smith et al., 1988) and Monserrat (200,000 ha) has 38 (Schwartz, 1982). To define the faunal context within which local and regional resource management decisions are made, conservation of biological diversity requires an understanding of regional species occurrence patterns. Our study focused on the Southern Rocky Mountains of New Mexico and included the San Juan, the Sangre de Cristo, and the Jemez Mountains. Across this region, we quantified patterns of species richness and faunal diversity based on reported and predicted occurrences for birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and butterflies across this region. Specific hypotheses related to the origin and maintenance of observed diversity patterns were tested and interpreted based on their implication for biodiversity assessment and management. Our results suggest that species richness for any one of the taxonomic groups does not indicate species distributions of other taxa. For terrestrial vertebrates, variation in faunal differentiation among mountain ranges was associated more strongly with differences in dispersal ability than with differences in habitat composition. Those butterflies classified as montane specialists exhibited a higher degree of faunal differentiation than did all other montane specialist species.
