Midway through the season, following thrilling victories over nationally ranked opponents, students began poking good natured fun at Head Coach Steve Lavin’s California roots by dubbing their cheering section ”Lavinwood.” president’s message Dear Friends, As you are all aware, St. John’s University is primarily an academic institution. The methods of this research included a historical study of the career of Coach Lou Carnesecca and his professional style. The results of this study indicate that there are learning takeaways for professionals and executives that go beyond basketball including his charismatic and endearing approach, his understanding and love for his employer and his distinct professional philosophy. The conclusions of this study illustrate that professionals, beyond basketball, can learn valuable professional lessons from this quintessential coach. In addition, this research relates to the world of sports in that often times the human characteristics behind a coach can define his / her brand in the long term. JOHN’ S UNIVER SITY BIG EAST CONFERENCE BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 34 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 26 national champi- onships in six different sports and 126 student-athletes have won individual national titles. The BIG EAST has enjoyed tremendous basketball success, especially in this decade. In 2008-09, the BIG EAST produced four of the eight Final Four teams in men’s and women’s basketball. It was only the second time in NCAA history that one conference placed that many Final Four teams in the same season. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 11 NCAA championships.
