Ruth Curfman 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs 3/12/2008 - BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq (AFPN) -- Airmen from the 64th Expeditionary Rescue Squadron here were called out to rescue two American citizens lost on a hiking trip March 2. "We initially started hearing information about a possibility of American citizens getting lost during a hiking trip at around 4 a.m.," said Navy Lt. Evan Scaggs, a 64th ERQS pilot and the flight lead for the rescue. "The Joint Personnel Recovery Center started to gather information about who the people were, where they were and checking to see if there were any other problems, while we were on stand-by for the call." The recovery center passed on the information, while the Servicemembers from the 64th Expeditionary HH-60G Pave Hawk flight crew and pararescue crews Rescue Squadron fast rope from an HH-60G Pave started preparing for a possible rescue mission. Author : Alan Storr Alan was born in Melbourne Australia in 1921. He joined the RAAF in October 1941 and served in the Pacific theatre of war. He was an Observer and did a tour of operations with No 7 Squadron RAAF (Beauforts), and later was Flight Navigation Officer of No 201 Flight RAAF (Liberators). He was discharged Flight Lieutenant in February 1946. He has spent most of his Public Service working life in Canberra – first arriving in the National Capital in 1938. He held senior positions in the Department of Air (First Assistant Secretary) and the Department of Defence (Senior Assistant Secretary), and retired from the public service in 1975. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Melbourne University) and was a graduate of the Australian Staff College, ‘Manyung’, Mt Eliza, Victoria. He has been a volunteer at the Australian War Memorial for 21 years doing research into aircraft relics held at the AWM, and more recently research work into RAAF World War 2 fatalities. He has written and published eight books on RAAF fatalities in the eight RAAF Squadrons serving in RAF Bomber Command in WW2. -
There Had Been an RAF Communications Squadron in Germany Since 1944
8 Pembroke-Andover Era 1969 - 77 There had been an RAF communications squadron in Germany since 1944. In preparation for the invasion of France a unit had been formed in July 1943 at what is now Blackbushe Airport but was then known as RAF Hartford Bridge. Initially called the 2nd Tactical Air Force Communications Flight, it transferred to RAF Northolt in April 1944, then followed the invading forces, operating in France, Belgium and eventually Germany, establishing itself at RAF Buckeberg in May 1945, where it was to remain for almost ten years. ‘Communications’, in this context, are nothing to do with radios or telephones. A ‘communications squadron’ is the RAF’s term for a light transport unit, with duties such as VIP air taxi and those passenger and freight tasks which do not justify larger transport aircraft. Typical examples might be medical evacuation and small but urgent packages. The role and organisation of the RAF in Germany changed as the political and military situation changed. Immediately after the war the British military force in Germany was, inevitably, an army of occupation. German civilian administration had largely either been destroyed or had broken down. Even elementary necessities of life such as housing and electricity had to be organised by the Allied military. As an example, until 1949, it was the British Army which was running the Volkswagen car factory which produced the Beetle at Wolfsburg. For the RAF, this situation was reflected in the change of name from 2 TAF to the British Air Forces of Occupation (BAFO) in July 1945. -

A Night Long Forgotten - 18th April 1944 At around 2300hrs on 18th April 1944 three members of the 384th took a shortcut – a shortcut that would lead to their deaths and ultimately the deaths of three Royal Air Force crew too. S/Sgt David Ollre, Cpl James Moore and Cpl Teddy Potocki – all three members of the communications section of the 384th Bomb Group – were cycling back to base. The assumption is they were returning from Geddington, possibly even the Star or the White Hart after a pleasant evening relaxing, when they turned to take a shortcut across the airfield presumably back to their billets. We can’t be sure of the exact route they took however what we do know is it took them across the 5000ft East / West runway. At the same time an RAF Short Stirling of 1657 Heavy Conversion Unit (HCU) was completing a series of night time ‘touch and goes’ – also known as ‘circuits and bumps’ – as part of a student training syllabus for new RAF Bomber Crews. The Short Stirling was the first of the RAF’s four engine bombers but by this stage of the war had been overtaken in performance and available numbers by both the Avro Lancaster and the Handley Page Halifax and generally retired from front line duties. Those aircraft retired now found themselves filling the essential role as the last part of the training programme for new crews to gain experience in operating large and complex aircraft similar to those they would be expected to fly over occupied Europe once fully fledged Bomber Command Aircrew. -
