2017 North American Indigenous Games

Team Manitoba Contingent Newsletter

The 2017 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) will be held July 16 – 22, 2017 in the , Hamilton and the Six Nations of the Grande River area.

Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The 2017 NAIG will begin with the Opening Ceremonies (OC) Sunday, July 16, 2017 at . The Closing Ceremonies (CC) will be held Saturday, July 22, 2017 at York University in the evening. The times of the ceremonies are to be determined.

During the games, a Cultural Village will be set up at the York and McMaster University Campus’ and will be free and open to the public. At the village, performances by artists and dance groups, nightly fireworks, concerts, cultural teachings, campus information and more will be showcased!

The Six Nations of the Grande River are planning to host their own Cultural Village during the week of the games alongside the Host Society. The Six Nations Annual Pow Wow is set for July 21-23, 2017. Once again, these dates and information are possible to change and will be confirmed at a later date.

Flight Information

Team MB Departure date is set for Saturday, July 15, 2017 from Winnipeg, with a return date of Sunday July 23, 2017. Team Manitoba flight, baggage information and packing lists will be sent in May.

It is mandatory that all Team Manitoba Members MUST travel to and from the games as a team. If any special requests for athlete travel FROM THE GAMES have to be made, you must submit a written request to the Team Manitoba Manager prior to April 1, 2017. If submissions or inquires are sent after this date, it will not be accepted due to Air Line Ticketing! NO EXCEPTIONS

Parents and Guardians, if you are planning on attending the games the following code can be used to book flights for West Jet (Online Only). This code is valid for 10% off up until July 29, 2017.

Athlete Villages (Accommodation)

The four athlete villages are: McMaster University, York University, Humber College and Durham College. It is not confirmed where each contingency will be staying but we should have confirmation in May. Our expectations are that the athletes will be staying at the accommodation closest to their sport venue. Please refer to the Sport Venue section to find the nearest Athlete Village.

Fee Information

Athlete's fees are now due! The final cost to attend the 2017 NAIG game as a Team Manitoba Athlete is $ 1,800.00. Due Dates: October 1/16 ($500), November 1/16 ($500), February 1/17 ($500) and final payment date March 15/17 ($300). If you have not already done so, please make payment arrangements with the Team MB Manager immediately.

The methods of payment are: Money Order, Certified Cheque, Cash in person, E-transfer or Branch to Branch. Please contact the Team MB Manager for instructions.

NAIG Media Partner

We are excited to announce that for the 2017 NAIG Games, the Host Society has partnered with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as the Premier Media Partner! The media partnership between CBC and the Toronto 2017 NAIG will provide historic coverage of the Games, with unprecedented reach to communities all over Canada, across multiple platforms.

Highlights of the agreement include:

 CBC Sports will stream a minimum of 100 hours of live and on demand competition coverage.  CBC Radio will produce five documentaries telling the stories of the participants in 2017 NAIG who have used sport as a vehicle to overcome challenges to strive for success  CBC Arts will produce a variety of digital and radio content reflecting the wealth of cultural expression during 2017 NAIG.  CBC News’ award-winning Indigenous Unit will cover 2017 NAIG through original journalism, story-telling and news coverage. This coverage will be distributed across all CBC/Radio-Canada platforms, including those specifically developed to reach Indigenous people.

Welcome to Team 88

From the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action, number 88 specifically calls on all levels of government to take action to ensure long-term Indigenous athlete development and growth through continued support for the North American Indigenous Games.

As a legacy campaign for the Toronto 2017 NAIG, Team 88, will utilize the spotlight of the NAIG to raise awareness and increase access and opportunity for indigenous youth and their communities to participate in sport and culture at all levels of performance. Team 88 recognizes the power of sport and culture as important pathways to reconciliation, creating a tangible opportunity for all Canadians to engage, support and participate.

Team 88 legacy campaign will actively promote opportunity for…

 Public education and the celebration of Indigenous athletes at a national level.  Reducing barriers to sport participation, increasing pursuit of excellence in sport, and building capacity for a more inclusive Canadian sport system.  Inclusive policy and program development that is relevant, addresses racism and levels the playing field.  Inclusion of Indigenous protocols in major games and international sporting events.

Fundraising

The Team Manager is currently working on a Spring/Summer Online Apparel Store. This is your chance to support Team Manitoba Athletes by purchasing apparel and gear! Once the store is up and ready, the link will be posted online on our social media pages as well as our website. If you have purchased apparel off the previous stores and you have not received it, you must contact Home Run Sports in Winnipeg.

We hope to have a Silent Auction Table, Merchandise Table, 50/50 and possibly food sales all to support our Athletes. If you wish to donate towards the fundraiser or volunteer, contact the Team Manager (contact info on the last page).

We currently have some time slots open for the concert fundraiser. If you wish to donate your time by performing, please contact the Team Manager with a brief bio about yourself, what you do and time requested. All submissions will be considered. Deadline to submit is February 28, 2017 at 4pm.

Pin Design Contest

We are seeking a design for our 2017 Team Manitoba NAIG Pin! Trading pins at the NAIG games are a fun and great way for our athletes to meet other people from across North America by trading pins! Submission can be sent to the Team Manitoba Manager (contact info last page of newsletter. Deadline to submit design February 28, 2017 at 4 pm.
