KS2/Secondary School/S1-3 Topic- the Shell Crisis
The First World War 1914-1918 Age- KS2/Secondary School/S1-3 Topic- The Shell Crisis The Shell Crisis of 1915 revealed that British troops on the Western Front in France did not have enough high explosive shells to use as ammunition against the heavily fortified German trenches. On the Western Front in France and Belgium, British soldiers were dying in their thousands because they were being shot down, after getting stuck in barbed wire during major offensives against German trenches. After heavy casualties were inflicted at The Battle of Aubers Ridge, a headline appeared in The Times Newspaper on 14 May 1915 condemning the lack of high explosive shells and the waste of life. Something had to be done. In response, The Ministry of Munitions decided to build HM Gretna, ‘The greatest factory on earth’ to mass produce the RDB Cordite for use in high explosive shells which were desperately needed at the front. Lloyd George was made Minister of Munitions in a new department created to solve the munitions crisis Headline from the Times newspaper on 14th May 1915 Empty shells The First World War 1914-1918 Age- KS2/Secondary School/S1-3 Topic- The Shell Crisis Over 10,000 labourers built HM Factory Gretna. Most were Irish navvies. The factory stretched for 9 miles across the Anglo- Scottish Border. This area on the Scottish Border was ideal as there was a large isolated area of farm land and marsh land. It had excellent rail links and water supply and was shielded by the Cumbrian fells and Scottish hillside. -

Thrift, Saving and Luxury in Canada During the First World War
From Spenders to Savers: Thrift, Saving and Luxury in Canada during the First World War By Madeleine Kloske Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in History Department of History Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Madeleine Kloske, Ottawa, Canada, 2017 ii Abstract: “From Spenders to Savers: Thrift, Saving, and Luxury in Canada during the First World War” Author: Madeleine Kloske Supervisor: Heather Murray 2017 This thesis focuses on wartime thrift and patriotic consumer campaigns as central features of the Canadian home front experience during the First World War. Using records from government officials, federal departments, and volunteer service organizations, as well as examples from newspapers, magazines, and other wartime publications, this study explores the ways in which wartime standards of acceptable consumption and patriotic spending and saving were developed, challenged and negotiated. It traces a shift in sensibilities from a spending to saving ethos through the lens of the Business as Usual and Made in Canada campaigns which, by mid-war, gave way to the thrift and food conservation campaigns. Notions of wartime patriotism demanded that every Canadian “do their bit”; thus, public participation in wartime thrift and saving was encouraged through widespread organized campaigns and enforced through informal surveillance networks. This study argues that wartime calls for thrift and sacrifice, meant to support a national project aimed at ensuring victory, were undermined by an apparent and persistent inequality; many Canadians perceived wartime policies as protective of the wealthy and business-owning minority at the expense of the working and agricultural majority. -
