ST IVES SCHOOL SPORTS ROUND-UP December 2018 ST IVES SCHOOL SPORTS ROUND-UP December 2018 SWIMMING SUCCESS Following their qualification at the Regional Relay Championships, The Year 7 and 8 boys swim team produced a great performance at the National ESSA Relay Finals in London to finish 28th in the country. The boys competed in the freestyle 50m long course event and posted their personal best time of 2:08:02. The team of Jack, Lewis, Jake and Jude should be proud of their achievement following their hard work in the training pool. They were the only Cornish team to have made it to the finals of this event; and earned the right to swim in the amazing Olympic pool at the London Aquatics Centre, alongside the very fastest swimmers in the country. Thank you to the boy’s parents for their fantastic support in taking the team to the event. KARTING Amelia competed in the 8th and final round of a long karting season with the track owner and ex Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell in attendance. She battled through the bitter cold in all 3 heats and a final to gain enough points on the day to become the 2018 MiniMax Vice Champion, missing out on the Championship title by just 9 points and finishing 9 points ahead of the 3rd place driver! What a great result. THE YEAR 9 BOYS FOOTBALL TEAM played a brilliant match to come away with a 5-0 win over Truro School in the first round of the ESFA Small Schools Cup. After a nervous first 10 minutes with both teams testing the other out, Andrew tucked away the first goal to settle the team down. Sustained pressure by the St Ives team meant the goals kept coming. Josh played a brilliant captain’s game at the back, Jago and Charlie controlled the midfield with Billy, who set up the first of two for Sam with a lovely cross. Sam’s second, an absolute thunderbolt from the edge of the area, sealed the win which the boys took with real confidence into round two. Our Year 9 team then went on a very accomplished performance to beat Cape Cornwall 2-0 in round two of the ESFA Small Schools Cup. Andrew scored twice to seal a win in the most appalling weather conditions; the match had to be abandoned in rain, thunder and lightning in the second half. Round three of the ESFA cup for Year 9 took the team to Five Acres School in West Gloucestershire. After a five hour drive following the closure of the Severn Bridge, the boys managed to prepare themselves well for a tough encounter with their opposition. St Ives made a superb start, pressuring the Five Acres team to prevent the opposition from reaching the St Ives half at all for the first ten minutes. Their dominance was rewarded with a penalty following a great run from Andrew who was brought down in the box. Josh stepped up to take the penalty but a diving save kept the ball out. Josh was first to react though and tucked away the rebound for 1-0. The St Ives back four were absolutely rock solid throughout the game and allowed the team the confidence to continually attack. Eventually Five Acres gave in to the constant pressure when man of the match, Jobe, skilfully lobbed the keeper to make it 2-0 and a deserved win. Thank you to Mr Rowe for his support and to Mr Keverne for providing additional transport. Best of luck in round four boys! TENNIS SUCCESS Congratulations to Adrian who competed in the Penzance junior club championships. He won the boys u14's singles, u18's boys doubles and u18's mixed doubles which is a superb achievement. Adrian has also been awarded the Tennis Assistant Of The Year for the third year running at the recent Penzance Tennis Club Awards night. NETBALL NEWS The Year8 and Year 10 netball teams played some fantastic netball against Humphry Davy School, coming away with two big wins! Congratulations to our players of the match Grace and Ella, and to everyone who played. SAM IS WORLD CHAMPION! SAM IN YEAR 10 is no stranger to top level Karate competition, however, his recent results are incredible: at the recent WKU World Championships in Athens, Sam fought in 3 different disciplines and also represented England in the Junior Team event. He got through all of the elimination rounds to make all 4 finals! He won 3 of his finals and then he fought his last final and won! He has brought home 4 Gold medals. -45kg 13-17 years Points Fighting/Semi Contact World Champion -45kg 13-17 years Kick Light World Champion -45kg 13-17 years Light Continuous World Champion 13-17 years Junior Teams Champion. Sam now holds 13 World titles! This is an extraordinary achievement and we wish him every success as he continues his sports career. HIGH PERFORMANCE ACADEMY Mrs Wara has led a fantastic start to our 2018-2019 Sport HPA programme. Our Year 10 athletes took part in an injury prevention seminar hosted by specialists at Penwith College. Please contact Mrs Wara for more information on how to be part of the Sport HPA. CROSS COUNTRY TRIUMPH Congratulations to our fantastic cross country runners on their recent performance at the Penwith Championships. We expect to have qualified for the Cornwall finals in every category. The year 10 team were especially strong winning both the boys and girls races. RUGBY RESULT! The Year 7 boys rugby team have had an outstanding result at the County Competition. The boys had really good wins against Penryn School winning 10 - 5 and against Mount’s Bay School 15-0. The team had 2 draws during the day against Falmouth and Penrice and losses against Redruth (who finished 2nd) and Newquay. Overall, in the county the year 7 team placed 6th, which, is a huge achievement. Stand out performances from Fletcher and Harry really added to the team alongside our normal stand out players: Elis, Charlie and Wes. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank St Ives Rugby Club for the excellent support and club link that students benefit from. Although rugby stops as part of PE after Christmas for boys, the girls begin their rugby lessons in the Spring Term. If your son/daughter is interested in playing please head down to St Ives Rugby Club on Friday evening where St Ives U12’s train on Friday 5.30pm until 6.30pm. Let’s see if the girls can match the boys as their rugby season kicks off after Christmas! FOOTBALL WINS The Year 10 boys football team have made a brilliant start to this year’s campaign in the ESFA Small Schools Cup competition. In the second round they took on ISCA Academy from Exeter, at home, in difficult blustery conditions. Playing against the wind in the first half St Ives scored first to settle the nerves. ISCA showed real determination though to equalise soon afterwards. Tom played a great game at right back to prevent any meaningful attack and Jack and Ethan took control of midfield. The St Ives boys started to dominate and the match moved forwards to 4-2 when Archie struck an incredible 30 yard curler into the top corner to lift the team again. Still ISCA wouldn’t go away and tucked away a penalty. However, two more goals for St Ives secured a great 6-3 win and a place in round three. Round three took the boys to Bournemouth, which proved a step too far this year. The St Ives team were knocked out by a very strong side from Leaf School. Mr Jones was full of praise for our players and noted that if the match was decided on determination, sportsmanship and attitude we would have been clear winners. FANTASTIC FOOTBALL! Our Year 7 girls football team took part in the County 5-a-side championship at Truro School and produced a brilliant performance. After three wins, one loss and one draw in the pool phase, the girls went through to the semi-finals against a strong Richard Lander side. Their run ended here but we are very proud of their achievement in being 4th in the county! Thank you to Mr Stevens for his leadership of girls football. A FINAL MESSAGE Congratulations to all our students on a very successful term of school sport. The fixture list and club calendar for next term will be advertised very soon on our web site and via the bulletin. Please be reminded that in year 7 to 10, after Christmas, the boys will all have football in one of their lessons, while the girls will also take part in rugby and football. Studded boots will be required for PE after Christmas for these year groups. Our lost property cupboard is bursting at the seams with unclaimed PE kit, especially sports jackets. Please be advised that any unclaimed items must be collected before the Christmas holidays. In January we will be selling unclaimed PE kit, especially jackets to raise additional funds for PE equipment. .

ST IVES, HAYLE & CAPE CORNWALL SCHOOLS 22nd September 2020 Ref: JCW/hcb Dear Parents / Carers The Truro and Penwith secondary Schools (Hayle Academy, St Ives School and Cape Cornwall School) have now been re-open to all students for 3 weeks. The start of the Autumn Term is always extremely busy and we have been delighted to welcome our new Year 7 students to our school communities. To their credit, our students have adapted to the changes in school routines and our steps to minimise the risk of virus transmission with great maturity and our staff teams are very grateful for all the support we have received from our parents. Managing the schools and these new systems has inevitably taken up a lot of the time of our leadership teams and we have done our absolute best not to allow this to distract us from our key priorities: the education, care and welfare of our students. I very much hope that our students’ experience has been all about their learning, progress and support and that our classrooms have been, to a large extent, a ‘refuge’ from the daily media focus on the pandemic. Having said that, I am once again contacting our families to provide further information about the safe manage- ment of our schools against a national and local context where concern is growing about the rising number of cases. At the time of writing, we still have no confirmed cases of Covid 19 within our student or staff teams in any of our three secondary schools but I think we all expect that this is unlikely to remain the case over coming months and that, eventually, our schools may well have confirmed cases in significant numbers.

  • Letter from Executive Headteacher
HAYLE COMMUNITY Hayle Academy SCHOOL Dear Parents/Carers As you will be aware, Hayle Academy is part of a family of schools, working closely together under the umbrella of Truro and Penwith Academy Trust. This partnership provides us with opportunities to share skills and ideas, to work together to support children and families and to use this partnership to improve outcomes for all the children within our schools. I am delighted to have been invited to extend my current role as Executive Headteacher across all three secondary schools within the Trust: Hayle Academy, Cape Cornwall School and St Ives School. My role as Executive Headteacher will be focussed on supporting the leadership teams within the schools to drive further improvement, underpinned by development of our school to school partnership. We already work closely together on approaches to teaching and curriculum development: connecting teachers who share a common passion for their subjects and for supporting children to achieve their full potential. Together with the leadership team at Hayle, we intend to use this partnership as a springboard to accelerate our development plans and to bring rapid and sustained improvement to Hayle Academy. We are ambitious for our students and for what we can achieve together through this partnership. The day to day organisation and leadership of Hayle Academy will continue to be managed by Mr Martin, as Head of School. I will be on site at Hayle for part of the week, sharing my time between the three secondary schools as needed. In my initial visits to Hayle Academy over the last few days, I have been impressed by the determination and dedication of Mr Martin and the leadership team who show a deep commitment to students’ education and to achieving the absolute best for the children in their care.
