  • Results of the 15Th Victoria Mile (G1)
FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: May 17, 2020 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 15TH VICTORIA MILE (G1) In accordance with the restructuring of JRA racing program for fillies/mares executed in the 2006 season, the Victoria Mile was established to give the older fillies/mares a stage to prove their ability among their own sex, in addition to the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, which had been the only G1 reserved for older fillies/mares. While the Queen Elizabeth is run over 2,200 meters and held in mid-November, the Victoria Mile is held in spring and provides female milers a chance to claim a G1 title without having a tough competition in a mixed field. The race, however, attracts not only fillies/mares suited to the mile distance but also outstanding runners from the middle-long distance group. Past victors include two-time Horse of the Year winner Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet; ’09), 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista (JPN, by Special Week; ’10) and 2010 fillies’ Triple Crown winner Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha; ’11). Meanwhile, both Verxina (JPN, by Deep Impact) and Straight Girl (JPN, by Fuji Kiseki) claimed consecutive Victoria Mile titles in 2013-14 and 2015-16, respectively. The top three finishers will earn automatic starting positions in the French G1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1,600m) where not only will they be exempted from paying registration fee but will be given a total of €20,000 as a transportation subsidy. The race also joined the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series this year, enabling its winner to earn automatic starting position in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1, 1,900m).

  • Subject: Result of the 49Th Sprinters Stakes (G1)
FROM: Haruyuki Miyoshi General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: October 4, 2015 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 49TH SPRINTERS STAKES (G1) The Sprinters Stakes, initially established in 1967 as a major 1,200-meter sprint race for three-year-old and up, was designated as a spring G3 event in conjunction with the new grading system implemented in 1984. It was then upgraded to G2 in 1987 before becoming a G1 sprint race in 1990 with the date of fixture also shifted to the latter part of the season. The race now positions itself as the highest mark for sprinters together with the Takamatsunomiya Kinen (G1, 1,200m) held in spring. As one of the first few races to open its doors to foreign entries, the race became part of the Global Sprint Challenge (GSC), an international six-sprint series on turf jointly held in three countries; Australia, England and Japan, which later expanded into a ten-race series held in six countries with the addition of Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. Silent Witness (AUS, by El Moxie) from Hong Kong played the starring role in its inaugural year in 2005 while Australia’s Takeover Target (AUS, by Celtic Swing) won the 2006 Sprinters Stakes, coming off a runner-up effort in the previous Centaur Stakes (G2, 1,200m), and ultimately earned the Global Sprint Challenge Champion title. Native Hong Kong trainer Poon Fai Yiu and jockey Hoi Wing Lai claimed the 2010 Sprinters Stakes title with Ultra Fantasy (AUS, by Encosta de Lago) who gave a tenacious performance to fend off some of the best G1 sprinters that were among the 16-horse field, and the race has continued to enjoy the company of some of the top sprinters from overseas in recent years.

  • Deauville Delivers a Classic Weekend Cont
MONDAY, 16 MAY, 2016 STRAIGHT GIRL DEFENDS MILE TITLE DEAUVILLE DELIVERS Straight Girl (Jpn) (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}) became just the second A CLASSIC WEEKEND mare to win back-to-back G1 Victoria Miles when successfully defending her title at Tokyo on Sunday. Settled midpack and on the outside as Red Reveur (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) and Smart Layer (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) dueled for the lead, Straight Girl had plenty of running room when the field turned into the straight and charted a course up the four path. She needed only hand urging to get to the lead in midstretch, and three reminders with the stick once she got there, but she ultimately cruised clear in deep stretch to win by a comfortable 2 1/2 lengths in a track-record time of 1:31.50. Last year=s G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) winner and race favourite Mikki Queen (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) made a late bid to grab second, just holding off her G1 Japan Cup conqueror Shonan Pandora (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
