Deauville Delivers a Classic Weekend Cont MONDAY, 16 MAY, 2016 STRAIGHT GIRL DEFENDS MILE TITLE DEAUVILLE DELIVERS Straight Girl (Jpn) (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}) became just the second A CLASSIC WEEKEND mare to win back-to-back G1 Victoria Miles when successfully defending her title at Tokyo on Sunday. Settled midpack and on the outside as Red Reveur (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) and Smart Layer (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) dueled for the lead, Straight Girl had plenty of running room when the field turned into the straight and charted a course up the four path. She needed only hand urging to get to the lead in midstretch, and three reminders with the stick once she got there, but she ultimately cruised clear in deep stretch to win by a comfortable 2 1/2 lengths in a track-record time of 1:31.50. Last year=s G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) winner and race favourite Mikki Queen (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) made a late bid to grab second, just holding off her G1 Japan Cup conqueror Shonan Pandora (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). There=s no question that a cloudless blue sky and a horde of Parisiens enjoying the extended public holiday weekend went a long way to enhancing the feel-good factor on the first really big day of the French season but, following a blockbuster breeze-up sale at Arqana on Saturday, the Normandy track added a certain sparkle to the French Guineas meeting which is rarely felt at Longchamp. The equine Deauville (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) battled hard but failed narrowly to win York=s G2 Dante S. on Thursday, but the G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains victory of his stablemate and paternal half-brother The Gurkha (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was never in doubt from a long way out along the fast, straight mile of Deauville=s La Touques racecourse. • Results of the 15Th Victoria Mile (G1)
FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: May 17, 2020 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 15TH VICTORIA MILE (G1) In accordance with the restructuring of JRA racing program for fillies/mares executed in the 2006 season, the Victoria Mile was established to give the older fillies/mares a stage to prove their ability among their own sex, in addition to the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, which had been the only G1 reserved for older fillies/mares. While the Queen Elizabeth is run over 2,200 meters and held in mid-November, the Victoria Mile is held in spring and provides female milers a chance to claim a G1 title without having a tough competition in a mixed field. The race, however, attracts not only fillies/mares suited to the mile distance but also outstanding runners from the middle-long distance group. Past victors include two-time Horse of the Year winner Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet; ’09), 2010 Horse of the Year Buena Vista (JPN, by Special Week; ’10) and 2010 fillies’ Triple Crown winner Apapane (JPN, by King Kamehameha; ’11). Meanwhile, both Verxina (JPN, by Deep Impact) and Straight Girl (JPN, by Fuji Kiseki) claimed consecutive Victoria Mile titles in 2013-14 and 2015-16, respectively. The top three finishers will earn automatic starting positions in the French G1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1,600m) where not only will they be exempted from paying registration fee but will be given a total of €20,000 as a transportation subsidy. The race also joined the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series this year, enabling its winner to earn automatic starting position in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1, 1,900m).
