Yates, Ph.D. Introduction Timothy Polk has noted, “Nothing distinguishes the book of Jeremiah from earlier works of prophecy quite so much as the attention it devotes to the person of the prophet and the prominence it accords the prophetic ‘I’, and few things receive more scholarly comment.”1 More than simply providing a biographical or psychological portrait of the prophet, the book presents Jeremiah as a theological symbol who embodies in his person the word of Yahweh and the office of prophet. 2 In fact, the figure of Jeremiah is so central that a theology of the book of Jeremiah “cannot be formulated without taking into account the person of the prophet, as the book presents him.”3 The purpose of this study is to explore how Jeremiah the person functions as a theological symbol and what these motifs contribute to the overall theology of the book of Jeremiah. -
It Is Difficult to Speak About Jeremiah Without Comparing Him to Isaiah. It
751 It is diffi cult to speak about Jeremiah without comparing him to Isaiah. It might be wrong to center everything on the differences between their reactions to God’s call, namely, Isaiah’s enthusiasm (Is 6:8) as opposed to Jeremiah’s fear (Jer 1:6). It might have been only a question of their different temperaments. Their respec- tive vocation and mission should be complementary, both in terms of what refers to their lives and writings and to the infl uence that both of them were going to exercise among believers. Isaiah is the prophecy while Jeremiah is the prophet. The two faces of prophet- ism complement each other and they are both equally necessary to reorient history. Isaiah represents the message to which people will always need to refer in order to reaffi rm their faith. Jeremiah is the ever present example of the suffering of human beings when God bursts into their lives. There is no room, therefore, for a sentimental view of a young, peaceful and defenseless Jeremiah who suffered in silence from the wickedness of his persecu- tors. There were hints of violence in the prophet (11:20-23). In spite of the fact that he passed into history because of his own sufferings, Jeremiah was not always the victim of the calamities that he had announced. In his fi rst announcement, Jeremiah said that God had given him authority to uproot and to destroy, to build and to plant, specifying that the mission that had been entrusted to him encompassed not only his small country but “the nations.” The magnitude to such a task assigned to a man without credentials might surprise us; yet it is where the fi nger of God does appear. -

Now this is a truth and the Song of Songs is our salvation and the redemption of the Earth and the principle of the Song of Songs is the reunion and recognition between the two genders and each - Solomon giving the Queen of Sheba all that she desired is the key to Wisdom. The Wisdom of Solomon is what gave him the six hundred and sixty six talents and six hundred and sixty six, ‘here is Wisdom’ is Homo sapiens. Sapiens is Wisdom. The mark of the beast Homo is sapiens, Sophia or Hockmah - Wisdom (p 666). The sacred marriage is not simply worshipping the female in an epoch of domin- ion, but it is the relationship of reconciliation between the two sexes and between humanity and nature. And light and darkness are represented in the sacred mar- riage. “I am black but comely O ye daughters of Jerusalem” The Queen of Sheba is the Shulamite, she's the darkened one of the enclosed garden. She also represents the repressed feminine principle. In Luke and Matthew it says “The Queen of the South shall return and judge the men of this generation” and that is the sacred mar- 194 riage principle returning and it is the feminine principal returning and what apoca- lypsia means - the term ‘apocalypse’ is an unveiling and it is traditionally the unveiling of the bride - in the feminine gender in Greek. -

Abstract This thesis challenges the traditional paradigm, which assumes that the period c.1050-c.1250 saw a move away from the ‘biblical’ or ‘liturgical’ kingship of the early Middle Ages towards ‘administrative’ or ‘law-centred’ interpretations of rulership. By taking an interdisciplinary and transnational approach, and by bringing together types of source material that have traditionally been studied in isolation, a continued flourishing of Christ-centred kingship in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries is exposed. In demonstrating that Christological understandings of royal power were not incompatible with bureaucratic development, the shared liturgically inspired vocabulary deployed by monarchs in the three realms is made manifest. The practice of monarchical inauguration forms the focal point of the thesis, which is structured around three different types of source material: liturgical texts, narrative accounts and charters. Rather than attempting to trace the development of this ritual, an approach that has been taken many times before, this thesis is concerned with how royal inauguration was understood by contemporaries. Key insights include the importance of considering queens in the construction of images of royalty, the continued significance of unction despite papal attempts to lower the status of royal anointing, and the depth of symbolism inherent in the act of coronation, which enables a reinterpretation of this part of the inauguration rite. -

A Commentary on the Book of Isaiah By Pastor Galen L. Doughty Southside Christian Church September 2018 INTRODUCTION: This commentary is based upon my personal devotional notes and reflections on the Book of Isaiah. It is intended to help you better understand some of the historical background of the book and the theological issues in Isaiah’s prophecy. It is not a technical commentary designed for academic projects so I do not use footnotes or include a bibliography. This material is intended for use by members and friends of Southside Christian Church to help you in a verse by verse study of Isaiah. I try as much as possible to link what Isaiah says with other parts of the Bible especially the New Testament so readers can see the connections in Scripture. In the commentary there are occasional references to the original Hebrew words Isaiah used in a particular passage. Those Hebrew words are always written in italics and are transliterated into English from the Hebrew. I go chapter by chapter in the commentary and sometimes individual verses are commented upon, sometimes it is several sentences and sometimes a whole paragraph. This commentary is based on the New International Version and all Scripture quotations are taken from that version of the Bible. Books of the Bible, Scripture references and quotes are also italicized. DATE AND AUTHORSHIP: There is no disagreement among scholars that Isaiah needs to be split into two sections. The first from chapters 1-39 is set during Isaiah’s lifetime in the days of Kings Ahaz and Hezekiah of Judah and the destruction of the north Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrian Empire. -
