  • Casanova, Julían, the Spanish Republic and Civil
This page intentionally left blank The Spanish Republic and Civil War The Spanish Civil War has gone down in history for the horrific violence that it generated. The climate of euphoria and hope that greeted the over- throw of the Spanish monarchy was utterly transformed just five years later by a cruel and destructive civil war. Here, Julián Casanova, one of Spain’s leading historians, offers a magisterial new account of this crit- ical period in Spanish history. He exposes the ways in which the Republic brought into the open simmering tensions between Catholics and hard- line anticlericalists, bosses and workers, Church and State, order and revolution. In 1936, these conflicts tipped over into the sacas, paseos and mass killings that are still passionately debated today. The book also explores the decisive role of the international instability of the 1930s in the duration and outcome of the conflict. Franco’s victory was in the end a victory for Hitler and Mussolini, and for dictatorship over democracy. julián casanova is Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. He is one of the leading experts on the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War and has published widely in Spanish and in English. Design: Joseba Gabilondo. Photographs: Wikimedia commons. ISBN: 978-1530868322 Library of Congress Cataloging Data: PH5281 .G33 2014 Barbaroak, LLC. www.barbaroak.com Only Basques preserve, to our days, their vulgar and barbarian language, which does not show any elegance, and is very different from the rest of languages and the most ancient of Spain, […] it is said that the whole Spain made use of the Basque language before the Romans entered these provinces and, with their arms, spread their language. It is also said that, because these Basque people were vulgar, ferocious, and wild […] and the mountains they inhabited were inaccessible, they never fell completely under the yoke of the foreign empire, or they shook it swiftly. Juan de Mariana, General History of Spain, (1601). What are we waiting for while congregated in the forum? The barbarians are expected to arrive today. Why is there such lack of action in the senate? Why are the senators sitting still and do not legislate? Because the barbarians will arrive today. … Why are the streets and public squares becoming empty? And everybody is going home with skeptical thoughts? Because night has fallen and the barbarians did not arrive. Some people came from the border And reported that the barbarians do not exist anymore. Now what are we going to do without barbarians? These people were after all a kind of solution. Constantine P. Cavafy. “Waiting for the Barbarians.” (1904; translation by Konstantinos Karpozilos).

The Bilbao generation of the sixties—branded inaugurally by the trauma of ETA, socialism, atheism, Aresti’s “Maldan behere” (Downfall), the survival of Euskara, the art of Oteiza and Chillida, feminism—found in Frank Gerhy’s “shipwreck” masterpiece its ultimate emblem and the promise of a new city. Because even after the ruins and the defeat the mandate persisted: you must change your life, you must transform your city. Paper, $25.00, ISBN 978-1-935709-58-9 “Joseba Zulaika’s That Old Bilbao Moon is imbued with a deep and layered intelligence, and a soft and sure voice, that makes it not only pleasurable reading, but brilliantly sets a new standard for books about cities.” Mark Kurlansky, author of Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World and The Basque History of the World: The Story of a Nation “Joseba Zulaika has produced an intensely informed and informative work that is an inherently fascinating read,” Midwest Book Review “This book is a sprawling, monumental testament to the agonies and the ecstasies of the Basque generation of the Sixties, which has been so deeply marked by the revolutionary adolescence of the armed group ETA under the Franco dictatorship, by its brutal, sordid adulthood of terrorism under democracy, and now by its apparent death, and the consequent resurrection and challenging metamorphosis of its political base.

  • Race, Language, and Basque Protohistory According to Sabino Arana
nº 30-Revista 7/7/09 7/7/09 11:00 Página 49 ESTUDIOS VASCOS Race, Language, and Basque Protohistory According to Sabino Arana A.S. Aranak bertan erabilitako metodologia linguistikoa aztertuz, ondorioztatzen da ezartzen zen hizkuntza eta arrazaren arteko harremana ez zetorrela bat lehenengo euskal ideologia abertzaleak arrazari eman zion garrantzi nagusiarekin. Artikulua laburbildu ondoren, azterlan honetan aztertzen dira Aranaren metodologia, bere artikuluan ezarritako hizkuntza eta arrazaren arteko harremana, ideologia abertzaleko zenbait kont- zeptu nagusiren formulaziorako izan diren erabilpena eta euren etengabeko agerpena 1903tik 1913ra arteko idazki abertzaleetan. This article contends that the linguistic methodology utilized in Sabino Arana’s “Protohistoria de la Nacion Vaska deducida del Euskera” (1899) establishes a conceptual relationship between language and race that is incongruent with the essentialist position afforded to race in early Basque nationalist ideology. Following a synopsis of the essay, the discussion addresses Arana’s methodology, the interplay between language and race in the essay, their use in the formulation of key concepts in nationalist ideology, and their conti- nuing presence in nationalist scholarship from 1903-1913.
