Logistics to the Lodge The emerald green and blue waters of the Dearborn River begin in the Scapegoat Wilderness and gently flows for more than sixty miles to the confluence with the Missouri River near Craig, MT. This area is all about fishing as it should be when located on one of the world’s premier trout streams. Fishing guides, fishing lodges, and fishing shops stipple the valley where there are more drift boats on the water than people in the community! The lodge is specifically about 38 miles southwest of Great Falls and 52 miles north of Helena, MT. Behind the lodge you will find miles of forested wilderness giving home to varieties of wildlife and activities such as hiking, camping, birdwatching, photography, scenic drives, and outdoor adventure! Premier Fishing and Hunting There is one entity that draws thousands of visitors from all around the world and that is the fishing. This section of the Missouri is known for its Blue-Ribbon Trout fishing. These waters are filled with nutrients from the cold tail-waters from the bottom of Holter Dam creating a smorgasbord of feed for those finicky fish. As a result, the population of rainbow and brown trout surge averaging at about 7000+ fish per mile of river. These fish are frequently greater than 10 inches in length! The river is a playground offering year-round fishing. In addition to the plethora of fishing access sites along Interstate 15, there are numerous streams and creeks in the area to tackle. Holter Lake is a short 15-minute drive up above Holter Dam and is home to the “Gates of the Mountains.” From there, Hauser Lake and Canyon Ferry Lake also provide excellent fishing and boating. The central location of the lodge puts you in the middle of tremendous hunting opportunities and within two hours of anything else. The avid hunter can pursue big game animals including White-tailed and Mule Deer, elk, antelope, Big Horn Sheep, Mountain Goats, Mountain Lions, and Black Bear. Upland birds and waterfowl also provide excellent prospects. ROLL CALL: All committee members were present. CONSIDERATION OF HB 84: Representative Winslow, House District 89, presented this bill to the committee. We are putting $1.2 million a year into a tourism promotion program when the states around us are putting $5 million. We are 49th in the nation as far as attraction and tourism. This bill has been wo~ked on for a year and some changes were made and some commitments were made from people that previously have not supported this kind of a tax. Several people have looked at ~hat could be done to put Montana in a position of c~mpetition in tourism. If we do not compete we lose. Montana does not even have an opportunity to get the word out on what a wonderful place Montana would be to vacation, people come through Montana because that is where the road goes, not because they have heard about it. This bill assesses a 4% bed tax on motels and campgrounds. The House committee added a couple of amendments which he supports. One would have a percentage go to the Historical Society, which plays a critical roll. The other breaks some of it down to go to the university system. John Wilson from the Department has some clean­ up amendments for some of the action taken in the House.

    Long-term field evaluation of Mecinus janthinus releases against Dalmatian toadflax in Montana (USA) S.E. Sing,1 D.K. Weaver,1 R.M. Nowierski2 and G.P. Markin3 Summary The toadflax stem mining weevil, Mecinus janthinus Germar, was first released in the United States in Montana, in 1996. This agent has now become established to varying degrees after subsequent re- leases made at sites throughout the state. Multiple releases of M. janthinus have presented researchers with a unique opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of this agent in diverse habitats and under a variety of environmental conditions. The results presented in this paper summarize findings from long-term field data, illustrating not only the impact of M. janthinus on the target weed, Dalmatian toadflax, Linaria dalmatica (L.) P. Mill., but also on correlated plant community dynamics. These results ad- ditionally provide a valuable means to compare and contrast the biotic response and control efficacy of this agent at both a regional and sub-continental scale. Most of the heritage properties detailed in this report were documented and treated under Section 106 (36CFR 800) of the National Historic Preservation Act (1966) as part of the MDT’s cultural resource program. That regulation is applicable to federally-funded projects that have the potential to impact historic properties.
