Palabras clave: Manuscritos, Pedro Juan Núñez, correspondencia Mayans. CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORY OF THE MISCELLANEA PHILOLOGICA OF PEDRO JUAN NÚÑEZ Abstract: This study aims to analyze the correspondence between the Mayans brothers and the scholars Francisco Cerdá and José Vega Sentmenat, in order to reconstruct the history of the manuscripts in Miscellanea Philologica, written by the Valencian humanist Pedro Juan Nuñez. Particularly, it focuses on the period going from the donation by Besora to Carmelitas Descalzos library in Barcelona to Jaime Villanueva’s library viewing at the beginning of the 19th century. Keywords: Manuscripts, Pedro Juan Núñez, correspondece Mayans. In 1814 it remained largely French-speaking, though it had been politically British for 600 years. The island's only town, St Peter Port (which in 1814 accommodated over half the population) had during the previous century developed a thriving commercial sector with strong links to England, whose cultural influence it began to absorb. The rural hinterland was, by contrast, characterised by a traditional autarkic regime more redolent of pre industrial France. By 1914, the population had doubled, but St Peter Port's share had fallen to 43 percent.

  • The Book of Ebenezer Le Page and Guernsey Literature and History
‘THE ROCK WHENCE YE ARE HEWN’: THE BOOK OF EBENEZER LE PAGE AND GUERNSEY LITERATURE AND HISTORY It say in the Bible ‘Look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.’ Well, those people are the rock whence I was hewn, and the hole of the pit whence I was digged. I haven’t said nothing about my cousins, and the cousins of my cousins; but then half the island is my cousins, and the cousins of my cousins. The Book of Ebenezer Le Page was published posthumously in 1981 and was highly praised on publication by such major contemporary novelists as John Fowles and William Golding. The novel sold well and created an interest in Guernsey life that it had seldom attracted before. Doubtless the vivid local colour of the book and its evocation of Guernsey’s ‘otherness’ within modern British and European culture had a large part to do with its success. The circumstantial details of the publication of the novel o·er the stu· of good journalistic copy. The Book of Ebenezer Le Page is Edwards’s only published novel. He began it when he was in his late sixties; he made a few unsuccessful attempts to publish it when he was in his early seventies; and it was finally published in 1981, five years after his death in 1976. Very little else is known of Edwards’s life. He was born on Guernsey in 1899, but left the island as a young man to study at Bristol University.

  • 'The Spell of Sarnia'1
Goodall – Guernsey Fiction 1 ‘THE SPELL OF SARNIA’ Fictional Representations of the Island of Guernsey PETER GOODALL University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba <[email protected]> Abstract Although there is nothing that resembles a comprehensive literary history of Guernsey, or of any of the islands of the English Channel, Guernsey has been the subject of many interesting representations in fiction. Two great novels dominate this tradition: Victor Hugo’s Les Travailleurs de la mer (Toilers of the Sea) (1866) and G. B. Edwards’s The Book of Ebenezer Le Page (1981), and these novels have a powerful intertextual relationship. One or two novels written in between are major works of literary art, for example Mervyn Peake’s Mr. Pye (1953), but most of the other eighty or so novels are works of popular fiction in a variety of genres and modes, especially the historical romance and the adventure story. On the whole, these novels rehearse a limited number of common themes: a romantic conception of Guernsey’s history, the physical beauty of the island coupled with a sense of the dangers of its dramatic coastline and the sea that surrounds it, and the prominence of religion in island society, in terms of both Christian sectarianism and the underground presence into modern times of paganism and witchcraft. Keywords Guernsey, Channel Islands, Hugo, Edwards, Peake, religion Introduction Guernsey is one of the islands of the English Channel––the others main ones being Alderney, Sark, and Jersey––that together with some smaller islands and islets make up the group referred to in Britain as “the Channel Islands”.
