How could we refuse? TRUTH is a beautifully written play in which the author, Karen Sierp raises some really tough contemporary issues like social media abuse, cyberbullying, power, consent and objectifying women. These are important concepts for young men to be tackling, and for this reason the play will not only be presented at two evening performances but will also be part of the YEP (Youth Education Programme) and as Daniel Jarmyn, Protagonist and Marco Jovanovic-Jozic as a Police Officer such there will be two matinees for schools. In the meantime there is a buzz of excitement as the school will participate in the media launch of the Fringe programme in early December. Apart from this, a company of emerging talented young filmmakers has been engaged to create a High Definition quality short promo for TRUTH at The Fringe with filming being done in the new Performing Arts Theatre allowing it to be one of the heroes of the promotional clip. Brock Murray as the barrister. Adam Nguyen as a witness. And what a hero it has been. It was certainly worth the wait. Boutique in size and traditional black box theatre in design, the new James O’Doherty OP Performing Arts Theatre is a great space to work in. State of the art lights, projection and sound create a huge range of possibilities for performance. Karen Sierp the writer of TRUTH has been commissioned to write another Stage 2 Drama play for Blackfriars and is already working on a concept which will showcase the technology in the theatre as well as the acting. The 2017 Stage 2 Drama class collaboratively created a short performance which was based on John Schumann’s (‘69) classic Vietnam War song, ‘I Was Only 19’. This play utilised the fantastic lighting and projection technology on offer in the new theatre. There is currently some discussion to recreate this performance in 2018 for a The cast during the performance of TRUTH.

St Dominic’s Day an opportunity to give thanks for the diversity that has made Australia the great nation that it is today. We must remember to live the truth (Veritas) and welcome our neighbour. A St Dominic’s Day was a joyful celebration, committed prayer life is essential to prevent us from hardening our hearts. which captured the Four Pillars of Dominican Life at Blackfriars: Prayer, Study, At our whole school assembly for Multicultural Day, Mohsen Sarwari and Joseph Community and Service. We began the day Pitia shared their migration stories, and Reza Mohammadi produced a video of the with Mass celebrated by Fr Matthew Boland multiculturalism at Blackfriars. Hearing the stories of migration was an emotional and gave thanks to God for the great work experience, and it highlighted the need we all have to make time to truly listen to each of the Dominicans. Mr Paul Belton (class other…we are more the same than different. of ‘75, past parent and past staff member) Archbishop’s Award spoke about the positive influence the Dominicans have had on his rich life. We thank Paul for taking Mr David Ruggiero (’92) the time out of his busy schedule (Paul is Assistant Principal Religious Identity and Mission Principal of St Paul’s College) to return to his alma mater and stir within us the passion we have for Blackfriars. Following recess (and the complimentary donuts) students worked in House groups, within different academic faculties, challenging their intellectual abilities. Lunch time was a celebration of community, as we enjoyed multicultural food, games and physical challenges. The day ended with the St Dominic’s Day Raffle which included both a Port and Crows signed guernsey. All the money raised from St Dominic’s Day will be used to support the work of the Dominicans overseas. Thank you to Mr Matthew Crisanti, who was Acting Assistant Principal Religious Identity and Mission, for coordinating the day, while I was on paternity leave. Multicultural Day My family came to Australia from Italy after WWII. My grandparents and parents followed the well-worn migrant path; faith, hard work, family and food (lots of it). I love my Italian culture, but I am proudly Mr Paul Belton (Head Prefect ‘75), Br Brendan O’Hearn and Mr Simon Cobiac on St Dominic’s Day Australian. As a son of Italian migrants, I have grown up with the Italo-Australian culture at the core of my life. I am proud of my heritage, and I am proud to be Australian. This country gave my family the chance to have a better life, and my heart is ‘True Blue’ with appreciation. On 16 June our Dominican Pillars came alive as we celebrated Multicultural Day. Blackfriars’ multicultural diversity is a tremendous gift to our Pillar of Community. Walking around the school yard, you see the harmonious interaction of our boys. Blackfriars is a testimony to what can be achieved in our world when people accept one another and welcome the stranger. Jesus taught a message of inclusivity, by living in a manner that welcomed all people, regardless of who they were or where they had come from. Jesus’ example reminds Mr Simon Cobiac and Prefects with special guests from fellow Dominican schools, St Dominic’s Priory us to do likewise. Multicultural Day was College and Cabra Dominican College.

8 Maintaining the Link with Fenwick High School

Blackfriars was further strengthened with Old Scholar, Mayor of the City of Prospect and Chair of the Blackfriars Priory School Board, Mr David O’Loughlin visiting Fenwick. David and his wife Alison were holidaying in Chicago, en-route to the Art Deco World Congress in Cleveland, Ohio. Ever the opportunist, David chose to visit Fenwick, which, by coincidence is located in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park. Oak Park is known for the home and studio of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and has the largest collection of Wright-designed residential properties in the world along the leafy streets within Oak Park. Unfortunately, a short schedule meant they were unable to view them! David was afforded the opportunity to tour the school and to meet with Fenwick President, Fr Richard Peddicord, Principal, Blackfriars Old Scholar (‘82) and Chair of the School Board, Mr David O’Loughlin (centre) with Fenwick Chief Mr Peter Groom and other members of Operating Officer Ms Nancy Bufalino, Girls Water Polo Coach, Elizabeth Timmons, President, Fr Richard the Fenwick Leadership. Early Learning Centre

Scarlett West (aged 4), from the Blackfriars Early Learning Centre has been the driving force behind raising money for sick children at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Scarlett came up with the idea to hold a pyjama day. She was involved with all stages of the planning for the day including presenting a written proposal to the ELC Director, the development of a ‘to do’ list, a letter home to parents, the making of the money boxes for donations and the counting of the money. She even spoke on the phone to staff from the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation. The children (and staff!) thoroughly enjoyed pyjama day and learning about giving to others. On Wednesday 27 September, Scarlett went to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital with her family and presented them with the $210 raised. She hopes that money raised will go towards teddy bears, quilts, blankets, pillows and pyjamas for the parents staying at the hospital. “It will make them feel better’’ she says. Scarlett, at such a young age has a genuine focus on social justice and plans are already being made for future fundraising projects.

The year was 2000. Talented Year 12 Kurzel and Flanagan brothers – Blackfriars student Nicholas Kurzel, having captained the team in 1999 was playing for the football history repeating itself! Blackfriars First XVIII Football team, when not playing for the NAFC league side! Nick’s younger brother Thomas (Yr 10) made his debut for the ‘firsts’ that same year and it seemed appropriate to mark the occasion with a family photograph. The Kurzel name was already well known at Blackfriars with Nick and Tom’s mum Anne (nee Flanagan) having worked for many years as Principal’s Secretary at BPS and their father Frank having been coach of the St Dominic’s Football Club, a largely Blackfriars Old scholars team that was a pre curser to the Fitzroy FC and current Blackfriars Old Scholars teams. Fast forward 17 years to season 2017 and the Blackfriars First 18 team sheet has a very similar ring to it! Nick and Tom’s cousin Callum Flanagan was named First XVIII Captain this year. As fate would have it, all these years later, Callum’s younger brother Kane made his debut in 2017, as a Year 10. With a photograph of Nicholas and Thomas playing Firsts in 2000 already in the BPS archives it seemed very appropriate to replicate that image. Congratulations to Callum, who was the Brothers Kane and Callum Flanagan (right) do a great job replicating a photo taken of their cousins, Thomas 2017 First XVIII Best and Fairest winner and and Nicholas Kurzel (left) some 17 years earlier! Kane on your achievements this year. Who says history never repeats? By the way – you guessed it Nicholas was Best and Fairest for the Firsts in season 2000 also, as was Thomas in 2003.

O’Leary and O’Leary – All in the Family! Old Scholar Shaun O’Leary (‘85) was very well known to many at Blackfriars as a student in the early 1980s. As a talented footballer he not only won the First XVIII Best and Fairest in 1985 but went on to represent Fitzroy Football Club for total of 301 games over 17 seasons. So it was with great pride that ‘Sid’ as he is affectionately known by his football mates, witnessed his son Jay winning the Blackfriars First XVIII Best and Fairest some 31 years later in 2016. Congratulation Sean and Jay but also to younger son Cooper who recently won the Blackfriars Year 9 team Best and Fairest and Intercol medal. Those footballing skills most certainly run in the family! do we truly acknowledge Darryl and ease some of his burdens while also celebrating a significant milestone. I was aware of another Blackfriars old scholar, John Schumann , who is well known to be the former lead singer of the iconic Australian band called ‘Red Gum’. Red Gum are responsible for penning one of the most influential Vietnam War songs ever written; titled, “I was only 19”. With this in mind, I got in touch with Jon Harmer earlier in the year and the ball was put in motion to get John Schumann to attend and play at Darryl’s birthday. I got in touch with John and spoke to him about his idea. Not much needed to be said as John Schumann is a staunch supporter of the Vietnam Vets and as a fellow Blackfriars old scholar, JOHN SCHUMANN agreed to play – AT MY DAD’S BIRTHDAY! The surprise was kept secret for the past four months and finally on Sunday 15 October, dad’s birthday party was in full swing. The secret was kept until 2.30pm Darryl Horner, Old Scholars John Schumann (‘69) , Paul Horner (‘97) and guitarist Rohan Powell. when the 50+ attendees, along with dad were told of the surprise. John Schumann (‘69) performed an unbelievably moving rendition of his former band Redgum’s John Schumann, attended with his trusty hit ballad ‘I was only 19’. So moved and emotional was Mr Horner on the night, that some 15 and very talented guitarist Rohan Powell years later, his son Paul approached Blackfriars to see if we could assist in John performing and together they captivated the crowd the song again, this time to celebrate Mr Horner’s 70th Birthday. As Paul mentions in his article with a half hour session of reminisces, below, it’s been a long journey for Mr Horner but with a mixture of diggers mateship and a pinch storytelling and heart felt acoustic singing. of Blackfriars Old Scholar support, the event that Paul describes below was made possible.
