Hailed by the Moscow Conservatory as one of their most gifted musicians, her Professor Victor Merzhanov noted that she possesses "Great virtuosity, brilliant artistic temperament, unique interpretive expression and a rich sound pallet." At the age of 5, Elena Ulyanova began to study piano with her mother, Larisa Ulyanova, in Saki, Ukraine. After winning several first prizes in Ukrainian and Russian competitions, she was awarded full scholarships for study in Moscow at Gnessin College of Music, Gnessin Academy of Music, and Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. While at Gnessin Academy, she won the Momontov competition, which also resulted in tours of Russia, Bulgaria, and Romania. She was also awarded a tour of Austria, along with the best students representing Gnessin Academy, which included Alexander Kobrin. -

95632 Tchaikovsky Rachmaninoff Piano Trio Trio élégiaque No.1 Klára Würtz · Dmitri Makhtin · Alexander Kniazev Tchaikovsky’s negative sentiments towards the piano trio were clearly set out in a letter of October 1880 to his patron, Nadezhda von Meck, in response to her enthusiastic praise for one composed by her resident pianist – a young Frenchman Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) called Claude Debussy (a piece long thought lost but rediscovered in 1985). In Piano Trio in A minor Op.50 “In 4. Trio élégiaque No.1 rejecting her hint that he should write something similar, Tchaikovsky elaborated on memory of a great artist” in G minor 13’16 his antipathy to the format, not only on principle – the characteristics of violin, cello 1. Pezzo elegiaco: Moderato assai – and piano being in his view inherently incompatible – but for the purely subjective Allegro giusto 18’26 reason that their combination would be “pure torment” for him (notwithstanding 2. Tema con variazioni: the passages for exactly those instruments in the second movement of the recently Andante con moto 18’16 completed Second Piano Concerto). While conceding that other composers, notably 3. Variazione finale (Allegro Beethoven Mendelssohn and Schumann, had produced excellent examples, he could risoluto e con fuoco) e coda not be tempted in that direction. And that seemed to be that. (Andante con moto-Lugubre) 7’33 The sudden death in Paris of Nikolai Rubinstein on March 23rd 1881 seems to have been the catalyst for an abrupt change of mind. Although their relationship had always been prickly – Rubinstein had famously damned the First Piano Concerto as, among other things, badly written and vulgar – it was based on solid friendship and mutual respect and Tchaikovsky was devasted by the news. -

A PORTRAIT Sergey Prokofiev 1891–1953 Preface Modish confidence and malignant conformity – two extremes that reflect the mores of western liberalism on the one hand and Soviet totalitarianism on the other – are the contradictory social and political poles that shaped the artistic and personal world of Prokofiev. While enjoying the former, and enduring the latter, he displayed an outstandingly original and fertile creativity that places him among the most distinctive and attractive musical voices of the twentieth century. Both his popularity and his status as one of the great composers of recent times are assured, for his music is devoid of intellectual posturing. Rarely does he sacrifice rigorous authenticity for artifice, or exchange well-wrought organic structure for glamour and superficiality. Prokofiev’s orchestral sonorities can be percussively steely and ironic one minute and poignantly romantic and witty the next, but they are always governed by a personal sincerity and fundamental musical honesty. The twentieth century witnessed many trends in music, some of which were self- conscious and indulgent, while others were simply blind alleys. Prokofiev, however, remained largely unaffected by strict artistic creeds (whether self-imposed or compulsorily enforced), and managed to maintain a distinctly independent musical voice that listeners continue to find refreshing. He studied the cello with Heinrich Werkmeister at the Tokyo Music School and then studied German-style harmony and counterpoint with Klaus Pringsheim, a pupil of Gustav Mahler, as well as conducting with Joseph Rosenstock. Later, he was appointed music director of the Imperial Orchestra in Tokyo, and the musicians who played under him broadened his knowledge of traditional Japanese Music. He then taught at Kyoto's Elizabeth Music School and Municipal College of the Arts. He composed a significant body of orchestral, chamber and vocal music, including a Symphony No. 2 (1960) and Piccolo Sinfonia for String Orchestra (1984). He became head of the composition department of the conservatory in 1923. He later studied at the Chicago Musical College in 1931 under Wesley LaViolette. He composed orchestral and chamber works but is best-known for his songs. The evening’s program will conclude with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (Italian). Guest artists, Adé Williams and Juan-Miguel Hernandez, were set to perform the Sinfonia Concertante, though Williams regrettably withdrew from the performances due to an injury. The MSO is pleased to announce that Annelle Gregory will be stepping in to perform with Hernandez on the piece. Williams, Hernandez, Gregory, and November’s guest artist, Gabriel Martins, are all alumni and winners of the Sphinx Competition. The Sphinx Organization is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. The MSO strongly aligns and believes in that mission as it looks to encourage diversity in the field. Additionally, the MSO has invited nearly 550 students that participated in the Stanislaus County Music Educators Association Junior High & High School Music Festival this past January to attend the April 4th concert for free. -

This dissertation will serve as a unifying element in bringing the Armenians in the diaspora and in the homeland together through the power of music. The information collected for each piece includes instrumentation, duration, publisher information, and other details. This research will be beneficial for music students, conductors, orchestra managers, festival organizers, cultural event planning and those studying the influences of Armenian folk music in orchestral writing. It is especially intended to be useful in searching for music by Armenian composers for thematic and cultural programing, as it should aid in the acquisition of parts from publishers.
