| Izabela Tomczak PLAYING WITH PUPPETS: FOUCAULDIAN POWER RELATIONS IN BIOSHOCK AND BORDERLANDS 2 Abstract The article investigates whether power/knowledge relations observed by Foucault in real life could be possibly applicable in the video game context. Two blockbuster titles, BioShock (2007) and Borderlands 2 (2009), are analysed to discuss the following aspects of Foucauldian theory: the existence of docile bodies, the creation of a dominant discourse of truth, and the maintenance of the created system. With regard to the creation of docile bod- ies, the perspective of two antagonists (Andrew Ryan and Handsome Jack) is centralised, and their role in creating a hierarchical system is presented. The Foucauldian rules of enclo- sure and rank, being crucial to the concept of docility, can be seen in the representation of the city of Rapture and the planet of Pandora. To develop the argument further, the rules connected to establishing and upholding the regime of truth, such as dissemination of knowledge, laws, monitoring and distribution of good, are analysed. Key words : Michel Foucault, power/knowledge, video games, Bioshock , Borderlands 2 Introduction Faced with rapid development, analyses of cultural products are bound to constantly expand to include new emergent genres. TV series, YouTube videos and blogs are reshaping and re-evaluating the state of the contemporary society, which in turn leads to greater confusion in their interpretation. One of the flour- ishing genres that challenges traditional modes of analysis are videogames. This 206 Playing with Puppets... unique mix of interactive and immersive features with pre-written narratives, at a glance, will seem to require separate critical tools; however, videogames still derive richly from literary theory and philosophy, and as such can be interpreted in those terms. -

Those playing on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store can play cross-play together. Vast alien treasures: Borderlands 3 (See at Steam) When will it come to Steam? Gearbox announced at PAX East 2020 that Borderlands 3 is coming to Steam on March 13, 2020. Why was it an Epic Games Store exclusive? There are a lot of reasons that could have contributed to Gearbox and 2K opting to release Borderlands 3 on the Epic Games Store as a timed exclusive, but the companies have unfortunately not stated why they came to this decision. A popular belief is that it is because Epic only takes a 12% cut of the revenue as opposed to Valve's 30% cut, but that is merely speculation. How does Gearbox feel about the backlash? There's been quite a bit of backlash from fans who hate this exclusivity deal and have even been review bombing previous Borderlands games on Steam. In response to this, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said on Twitter, "Ironically, that this misuse is possible and that Steam has no interest in correcting this misuse makes me kind of happy about 2K's decision and makes me want to reconsider Gearbox Publishing's current posture on the platform." ABSTRACT An exploration of how characters develop identity through language use in a video game’s narrative, specifically in video games that do not allow for players to make narrative-altering choices. The concept of literacies is used to create a critical framework through which to view video games themselves as a literacy, as well as to view them as a discourse. This thesis analyzes how dialogue is used to develop and showcase gender, sexuality, personality, moral identity in characters in and out of the player’s control, as well as how dialogue builds the narrative world in which these characters exist. This thesis includes two case studies, on the Borderlands video game series and the Halo video game series, approaching each series from a perspective that showcases how its unique world and characters are created through language. Each series has a specific facet to its narrative that is examined in depth; in the Borderlands series, the importance of storytelling to world-building and moral identity, and in the Halo series, the significance of speech itself as an act. -

Swearing is considered as a means of communication. Some people use swear words in their utterances to convey certain intentions. However, people would likely to use different swearing expressions when they are possessed by different emotional states. This phenomenon of swearing could happen in many different situations in society. In this research, the researcher intends to analyze the swearing which are uttered by the main character of a video game called “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!”. The abundance of swearing uttered by the main character, Jack, throughout the story of the video game triggered the researcher to analyze them in order to find the types of swearing and also the motives behind the swearing expressions.
